Japan introduced these so called bullet trains in 1964,and 46 years later, few countries have trains as fast as these.Japan is truly ahead in the future, even during the past. Here in the States,we have nothing like this. Great video, since I was a small child I've loved trains, and still do at 23!
Thank you for your comment. Me, too. I'd love to see it. I like an old steam locomotive, too. I'm really excited about it. This Shinkansen 500 series train debuts in 1997, and will withdraw from Tokaido (ShinOsaka-Tokyo) in the near future. It replaces new model N700 Shinkansen train. But, I like 500 series better than N700.
Japanese SHINKANSEN is NO.1 in many respects. How safe, how comfortable, how fast.....The maximum speed of Shinkansen isn't the fastest in the world, but taking into consideration Japanese geografical condition such as the number of tunnels, how steeply curved rails are, it is fast enough to be proud of!
I agree. The only high speed train in the US as of 2009 is the Acela Express in the northeast corridor (Washington DC to Boston). The US put all its effort into highways and airports, and now that cheap oil is gone we have to rebuild everything to catch up to Japan and Europe.
That's very good but, I doubt your のぞみ was a double decker(bigger/heavier) and the modification you're talking about were in the catenary, not on the train itself I believe. It's quite interesting to see paople being so passionate about this things, after all, 電車だけ Enjoy your nozomi, I'll enjoy my old daewoo. Cheers mate!
The nozomi 500 reached 443 km/h WITHOUT modifies. The TGV reached 574 km/h with more modifies than a Shuttle. Have you any idea of what speed could reach the Nozomi 500 with the same modifies of the TGV?
Unfortunately, there isn't Linear Chuo Shinkansen (581 km/h maglev train) yet next year. Now fastest shinkansen trains are 500 series and N700 series (300 km/h). Linear Chuo Shinkansen will be constructed at a route different from the Shinkansen. Opening to traffic is a schedule in 2025. Riding maglev train from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka(distance: approx. 500km) will take one hour. But it is after for 16 years... Have a good weekend! ^^
Additionally, the annual deviation schedule of the Nozomi service, including Typhoon season and winter season, is 36 seconds. Impressive! Only Germany can even compare to the sense of timeliness of the Japanese.
Dear Tatsuya, You're very close to the million of views. WOW !! So happy for you Tatsuya ! To The Best Man in Japan ! My Congradulations !! Catherine ♥
Now that is one SWEET looking train! I look forward to checking it out soon. I also can't wait for the new mag lev train in testing - it has gone close to 590kph. They actually only want to run it at 500, but they just wanted to see what the top speed was. Its ganna be soooo nice!
@YunaPT Negative. Only the N700 serries train can tilt with 1 degree at the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Line. And, we will be able to ride the E5 series tiltable train on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line at the end of 2010.
Cont. For instanse, the shape of pantagraph unit(you can see @1:13) is very unique not to generate the noise. Furthermore, Series N700 EMU, the newest(in duty) Shinkansen train operated at Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Service has "the all-round hood" in order to reduce the noise and the drag. The hood is rubber-made and coverred at each car's coupling-section.
@subbuteo91: this specific model, the 500 serie Shinkansen, has been designed by a german design institute :) Don't you find that it's a lot different than most of the other shinkansen trains?
@yamahabradley It's a miracle Shinkansen can operate without fatal accidents despite such a tight schedule. I'd like other countries to adopt Japanese Shinkansen System so that tragedies such as the ICE accident that occured in Germany in 1998 will never be repeated.

@MurphyColeman It is fast and there are lots of them. They can be faster but they have to use the same track system that the earlier bullet trains use which somewhat slows them down - been on them - fantastic and they arrive and leave on the second they are supposed to !!
I know that the Brazilian goverrnment is getting japanese bullet trains to go from Campinas,Sao Paulo and Rio by 2012. From what I've heard they are working with the Japanese so they can have the latest technologies for the speed trains. This train is Insane....lol...supercool !!!
@muncasteroger :Thank you for your comment. Affrimative. The shape of nose is very efficient for the drag reduction. The operator must think about this problem from the side of ecology - the emission of carbon dioxide(by reducting the amount of electricity at operation) per train is a good sales-point comparing with airplane). Of course, the shape of nose is not the only countermeasure for noise & drag reduction.
Ehm, the TGV V150 had a lot of modifies: modified engines with double of the usual power (19.000 kW instead of the usuale 9000 kW), greater wheel radius, more rigid suspensions, modified trasmission, just 3 coaches instead of the usual 8-9 ones, and so on. The Nozomi500 reached 443 km/h with all its usual technical features and with its regular coaches composition. With the same modifies of the TGV V150 above, it could probably reach more than 600 km/h.
I love the evolution of the Shinkansen. They were cool to begin with, but it seems each new design outdoes the previous one. Puts North American railroading to shame.
@AF401 Thank you very much for appreciating Shinkansen and being a big fan of the train.(^_^) As you know, a Chinese high-speed train named "和谐号" crashed and claimed many lives. It's very regrettable that Chinese authorities played down the safety of the passengers and stuck to the highest speed in the world. They should recognize it's nonsense to pursue superficial efficiency and reputation. Unfortunately there is no accumulation of how to operate the high-speed train safely.
During the Shinkansen's 45-year, nearly 7 billion-passenger history, there have been NO passenger fatalities due to derailments or collisions, despite frequent earthquakes and typhoons!!
Nasze koleje, to prawdziwy Rollercoaster. Zwłaszcza na odcinku Kluczbork-Katowice. Świetna zabawa i niezapomniane emocje!
I like japanese technique's, great stuff!! I like to visit japan in the nearby future it looks like a wunderfull country to me, i also like japanese people they are very friendly and make pictures of everything :) i live and amsterdam and i meet a lot of japanese toerists :) great movie!
The only derailment of a Shinkansen train in passenger service occurred during the Chūetsu Earthquake in 2004. Eight of ten cars of the Toki No. 325 train on the Jōetsu Shinkansen derailed near Nagaoka Station. There were no casualties among the 154 passengers. In the event of an earthquake, an earthquake detection system can bring the train to a stop very quickly. A new anti-derailment device was installed after detailed analysis of the derailment.
The shinkansen has very severe regulations about the noise and the vibration not to annoy those who living in the near of shinkansen's track. Every shinkansen train has a very unique shape of nose. One of the reason is countermeasure for the noise of wind - generated at the nose of train by running at high-speed. The operator must keep the level of noise under 70 db(25 meters away from the rail track) in the residential area.
@legendaryawesomedude for the price they charge you to ride the train, you can expect it to be clean on the out- and inside! it's very expensive to travel by shinkansen
This is what happens when a country and its citizens take transportation seriously and don't play political games. They end up with the #1 rail system in the world.
@NARTCC Mostly no, because unlike the French trains, the Japanese ones are hardly ever late. :) And yes, I am speaking from repeated personal experience.
Hard to believe it , but this series 500 has been retired. According to Japan's standarts this train is to old, so they put it out of service. It seem like Japan is loosing touch with reality, what's left for us ?
Marius, the serial Nozomi 500 has almost double power than the serial Tgv Pos trainsets. That's the reason because I say that, receiving the same modifies applied to the Tgv V150, the Nozomi 500 could be able to do higher performances.
@MadeInGermany81 This train can go over 300km/h and it is ordinary speed for trains in Japan. You can travel 1000km/5hours easily in japan using train system....

Such a cool train! There is nothing like riding the Shinkansen throughout Japan. My favorite way to travel!
Japanese trains are so beautiful!
500 series Nozomi is 16 cars, about 400 meters long, and 300 kilometers per hour (186 mph).
Thanks for your comment !

Something like this would be lovely to have in Norway too. It looks so magnificent.
Wonderful video. Just wish I could go to Japan to see the trains in person.
Also very professionally shot.

This Shinkansen was designed by Alexander Neumeister (Germany). It's like pointed beak.
I like this Shinkansen (500 series) the best. Have a good day.

The TGV (574,8 kmph) was a prototype with 25000 Hp, In regular operation they drive "only" 320 kmph max speed depending on tracks

This train looks amazing. Also the acceleration is very impressive!
500 series, one of the most elegant work. I really admire its acceleration (1.75km/h/s)
The irony is that bullet trains always appear to arrive slower than any other train.
The nozomi 500 reached 443 km/h WITHOUT modifies.

looks like its shifting some even when standing at the platform. I think the 500 series shinkansen looks nicer than the 700's
I just love train stations because of the trains!
@YunaPT

Simply wonderful. Shinkansen is my best travel experience everrrrrrrrr.

that's a LONG train!! here in holland we don't have sooo nice trains!!
@simhopp That accounts for it. It looks quite different from other Japanese high speed trains.
really good journal bearings!

My regards to the Japanese and their incredible technology.
I think usual Nozomi has 16 car (this train also)
the shinkansen may not be the fastest. but it definitely is the sexiest
balticsurfer, its not German concept. Japan has already invented this high speed railway system in 1960's.
