  • This is a video on how to reset a BIOS password on a newer Toshiba Satellite laptop with a B500 jumper pad on the motherboard next to WIFI and Ram module. Some models will vary on jumper location.

Great video. Worked perfectly. Definitely recommend the soldering route. I tried to do it with a metal tool and it took a lot of effort.

Thank you! I actually have the older model with B500 at the DIMMs (no need to remove the whole back cover). My problem was different - my UEFI was set to fast boot and I couldn’t get into the BIOS when I upgraded to a SSD.

I use to repair Laptop motherboards for a living at component level, even replacing BGA GPU and etc. When a laptop BIOS is locked with password, a checksum of that password is stored to a sector of the FlashROM - this is a chip on the mainboard of the device which also contains the BIOS and other settings. Toshiba use jumper pads directly on board to erase FlashROM. For some brands like dell, this checksum is displayed after entering an invalid password for the third time. (Dell uses the service tag #) using this number a master password can be calculated. Which is the reason this number is displayed and is the way the OEM tech support calculates a master password, but newer one goes by service tag #. Pulling batteries won't do it on laptops. Since you can't boot the laptop past the bios password screen) you can't hardly use some software to reset the password anymore like in the old days!) You can get a password for nearly all laptops. In some case like newer Lenovo you have to reflash the firmware. I've in some cases shorting out the SCL & SDA pins on EEPROM chip, will clear it, or using an "eeprom reader" to get a copy / dump of bios and " fix " the bios so it boots with the Master password if can't dump the checksum info that needed to generate a password on screen. The most secure one would be Apple as requires to much effort and require changing 3 major IC's to remove Apple ID, yes it is possible, but not worth it and you lose data, easy way is to have a store write a receipt, or if you have the original sale receipt and go to Apple store and they will reset it off server, or if you have original email use to setup Apple ID and it not in lost/stolen mode they will usually reset Apple ID.
Now if you bought a laptop off eBay, or Facebook and it came like that, then always recommend opening a case and returning it as likely stolen, as some laptop due have a LoJack mobile security system and TPM in place and will even hardware lock the drive secure erase and dump GPS data back to server. Panasonic Toughbooks and Toshiba satellite does this. I do know how to get around those as well and make untraceable, but way more involve.
I do component level repair on mostly Apple products better then louis rossmann as been working on them before the iPhone/iPod days. Plus not scared reverse engineer and to work on stuff even with limited, or no service manuals and data available. The way I look at it is worst case need to replace board, or not repairable, but going to attempt it and worst case a expensive learning lesson? Just wish I did videos then, but was working for a company servicing and doing warranty repairs of mostly wide format and laser printers at the time and barely had time and TH-cam didn't come around till later on, otherwise may have been as big as he is, but now he has that market and well known and he truly deserve it as he impressively learned on his own with zero experience and learned on the way fully admitting to it and have zero issues to owning up to mistakes and showing how to overcome them. One of my favorite all time honest TH-cam creators and worth watching. It rare to find a good tech TH-camr, most get paid off, free stuff, very little knowledge and worthless unboxing videos and biased. Yes some state that getting free product won't affect reviews and will do a negative review at times, but it does in some way as they are not as harsh as they could be as in fear companies won't sent them other products if review is overly to harsh.
