Ultra High Density Mango Experiment Update - 9B Arizona Desert

- Mango trees are not commonly grown in my hot desert climate but are one of my favorite fruits and one I have always wanted to successfully grow and fruit. Mango trees can be challenging to grow in non-tropical climates (like arid deserts) if these elements are overlooked: rootstock vs soil structure, irrigation, and sunlight exposure. I’ve had failures over the years but have learned lessons and am now seeing positive results. I would like to see more home gardeners in a similar harsh climate avoid the challenges I faced earlier and succeed.
I am excited to share an update to the video, New High-Density Mango Seedling Area - AZ 9B from 2 years ago (linked below) of a 100 square-foot planting of mango seedlings in my non-ideal Phoenix Arizona area (one 9B) yard. It also shows progress from the expanded varieties planted in 2023 and 2024. Check out the progress and learn more about this young seedling experiment.

I have a few of the Sinclair mangoes. They have been doing very well in the San Francisco bay area. Very happy with it. I am so impressed you are able to keep so many varieties so healthy in such a tight space
Fantastic video on your Mango varieties collection! Please plant or graft Kesar on in-ground tree. Would love to see video on how it grows/fruits in-ground. Thanks.
Thanks! That's the plan. I will graft Kesar onto an in-ground seedling tree and grow it in a container. I've heard great things about Kesar!
thanks for all this! out of all the fruit channels on here, you have so much actually helpful info, especially for me on 40th and southern!
You are most welcome and glad the content helps!
Great video and looking forward to your progress with this project. 🥭
Thanks!
Glad you got a CAC thats my favorite this year 🎉
So much good information in this video! I also prefer seedling mangos in the phx area they are much more resilient to our growing conditions. And I also plant my mangos right on top of the native soil. I literally cut the bottom of the mango's pot out with a razor blade, then place the bottomless pot right on top of the soil where i want the plant to grow. 1-2 years later the plant is rooted into the ground and I can cut off the sides of the pot and add some more amended soil around the sides of the root ball. I didn't realize other people were doing this also! I actually had people laugh at me before for doing this lol
That sounds like an easy and great way to plant on a mound. Planting on a mound makes so much sense here but few do it. Thanks for watching and happy growing!
@@EnlightenmentGarden What type of sand do you use in your potting mix and where do you source it?
@@RyansBackyardNursery Lowes; I get the all-purpose sand. However, I sometimes use decomposed granite instead of sand. It still aids in drainage but retains more moisture than sand and can be useful for plants that prefer moisture like jaboticaba.
Good info!! I’ve got around 200 mango seedlings around 6 months old right now going to be doing a lot of grafting come spring
Wow! That's awesome!
Great video, amazing progress with your mango trees. Thank you!
Very nice ! Ive had good results with peet , pumice , and rice hulls
Very cool project!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and research. Very important
Awesome thanks for sharing
Do you still apply gypsum or sulfur each year?
I’ve been using blood & bone meal on my Nam Doc Mei 3 times a year & one application of gypsum. The tree looks healthy but definitely not a fast growing tree.
I kinda wish I had planted a different variety but I still have room for one or two more. Now I have some new ideas. Thanks!
I have not applied gypsum since 2 years ago to help drainage. I applied elemental sulfur only in spring. Trial and error. NDM was one of my first varieties and I genuinely loved it at the time. The more you learn, the more things can change. With some experience (small as it is) dwarf trees are the poor rootstock. The more vigorous, the better on rootstock. My advice now: buy lots of premium mango fruit (different cultivars) next summer and grow your best rootstock out. No one in our area has discussed pros/cons of specific seedling rootstocks or even advocated for growing them. The main channels are affiliated with nurseries and have their own agenda.

I like that idea about purchasing mango fruit from different cultivars. Watching what trees have preformed well for you definitely helps since I’m also in the Phoenix area.
I did get four fig trees planted last year, one Barbados Cherry, and two Graceful bamboo. Ran out of time to purchase the boxed variety mango fruit but am looking forward to trying some of my own seedlings. Will be rewatching some of your videos when the time comes.
Very grateful for your channel, it’s one of the best I’ve come across.
Hi 🙋♂️,
what‘s your opinion on the variety „Spirit of 76“ ? Is this a kind of mango you would like to grow ?
Hi! I only tried Spirit of '76 once (from a FL farm) and it was not perfectly ripened. I was not impressed. It was chalky and not too sweet for my liking. Around the same time, I tasted far better classical mango cultivars like Valencia Pride, Cac, Beverly, Pickering, and Venus on taste.
@@EnlightenmentGarden Thank you ☺️
Hello- thank you for the very informative video. Can you tell me where to had the plant tags made with the names on it?
You are welcome! Yes; I recently posted a video about it, "Durable Plastic Plant Tags for Harsh Climates." The Etsy shop link is on that video but it is called MadeByMorelandKC. They are really nice quality tags.
How do you find the air layered mangos in comparison with the seedlings?
I've never seen mango trees sold as air layers so I cannot answer your question. I've only seen grafted and non-grafted seedlings available and observed that the non-grafted seedling mango trees grew twice as fast as my grafted trees.
I had watched your earlier videos on this subject when the seedlings were small. Great progress! A lot to learn from your experience. How to you make those labels? TIA
Thanks! I purchased the labels from an Etsy store. If you search under my videos for plant labels, I have all the information in a video on the plant markers including the shop link.
@@EnlightenmentGarden Thanks for the info! I will.
You can have a scion from fruit cocktail if u like. Have cotton candy too but it's like 7 gal size now. Coconut cream and Venus are still small.
That is kind of you to offer!
what is the best way to get access to a lot of varieties and start them? I live in California central valley Zone B. And would love to do something like this. Would I also need to use frost cloth during winter since we get frost?
Next May - July, order as many mango variety boxes from Tropical Acres or similar as you can. You get to enjoy the fruit and then plant the seeds to get plants out of them. I had 100% success germinating the seeds from fruit I bought fresh from Florida farms this summer. You can buy seedlings also but it's far more expensive. My source for seedlings was ebay (cocotropics239). Yes you'll need to frost protect at least for 3 years
Where do you find affordable pumice?
Summerwinds sometimes carry bags of it, but I would not consider it cheap. They run around $30 each.
I found some at Walmart. $7 for a 0.5 cubic ft bag.
My mind is blown from how much growth you have gotten. Did you start in the bigger containers or did you step up to them.
Thanks! Some have really impressed me too on their size. I stepped them up along the way. Most started in 4" pots when they came to me. I up-potted into 1, 3, 7, and finally, 15 as they grew over time.
