    If you seed them directly onto your soil , they will grow 4 times faster because they can develop a long tap root. Even in our horrible native soil they will germinate if in a cool shaded spot, replicating being underneath mama tree. In a pot the tap root is coiled immediately, hence the slow growth on potted grafted mango trees. They never had a root system because they were in a pot. Try seeding first in ground, and then graft onto those trees. Its all about the root system, thats why moringa directly planted will always be stronger than when people try to plant a potted moringa. And always lay them sideways because thats how they fall in nature, they land on their side. You dont even have to open the seed, just put the fruit where you want i and keep it wet. As the fruit rots, it will feed the seedling like what happens in nature. Good job! Cheers from Mesa!

      Thanks for the tips, Jay! Do you or will you have grapefruit trees available in a month or so? And do you still offer delivery? I need to add one once we cool down a little bit

    Thanks for the video, Natasha, I definitely will save the seed the next time I buy a mango. You must have a good source for the variety of mango fruits. Happy gardening!

      My friend John in Florida sent me quite a few but you can also order premium mango variety boxes from FL online. FruitFarmacy (on Etsy) was a place I ordered from. Great mangos!

      Gr8 vidéo… explained well.
      Looks like the mangoes shipped from Florida are not post pick treated. This is good. Supermarket mangoes are radiated or hot water washed which damages the embryo and germination is aborted…IMO

      @@thegr8stm8 I appreciate it, John! While the mangos I ordered were costly, I felt they were well worth it. Delicious varieties and nice healthy seeds.

    On a whim I started some mango seeds just last week. Very timely. Thanks for the tips. One question: how do you have your outdoor shaded area setup? Any suggestions on products that last? Thanks!

      You are welcome! The shade frame is made out of 1" EMT conduit and connectors. Please check out my video called "Summer Shade Cloth and Sunscreen for Garden / Trees in a Hot Climate" where I break down all the materials and setup for the shade structures.

    Great youtube! Do you recommend any online store to purchase mango seedlings? Thanks!

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes; almost my entire collection of seedlings come from an eBay store called cocotropics239 located in Florida. The link is in the description. John Sinclair is the owner and a wealth of knowledge.

    Natasha, if I wanted to order a specific polyembryonic mango fruit like Cotton Candy, is that possible? I’m wondering if it’s possible to order a fruit and plant the seed directly in the ground under 80% shade cloth?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ordering a single mango fruit is not common. Miami Fruit and others sometimes have 5 lb+ boxes of a specific variety when in season. The more common practice is buying a variety box of which the specific varieties in your box are not known. I found out too late that the best place to get mango fruit boxes is from a company called Tropical Acres. They put together boxes of specific varieties from their farm but they are sold out/done for online orders this season. As for direct seeding, Jay recommends that in the comments here but given my soil is not ideal like his, I would not risk a failed germination attempt. Even if germination succeeds, I would not risk killing a fragile seedling. I prefer to play it safe and 100% recommend growing out the seedling at least for a year in perfect soil in container culture before putting it in the ground (in spring) based on my experience of the vigor between a 1-month-old plant and a 12-month-old plant growing in the ground. Of course, the method you select is up to you but just giving you my two cents.

      My soil is pretty bad and even after building a large soil sifter it a bit of work to prepare for a planting. Kinda glad you told me that most mango fruit boxes have sold out. I planted quite a number of new trees last year and kind of need to take a breather. Your advice has always been excellent so I’m going to follow it again! Wish I had good soil like Jay at Arizona Fruit Trees…

      Thanks, Jay. I watch a lot of your videos, too, lots of good info. Your place is amazing. I’m too old to start over some place new. But if I did move it would definitely be outside of any HOA. That’s pretty neat that you no longer use air conditioning.

    Would you ever keep a Indian green thornless Jujube in AZ 9b?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not in my current yard. If I had more land, I would! They get huge! I may try a container approach but I don't think the tree will be happy long-term in that situation

    • @MrOrcslayer
      @MrOrcslayer 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      but what would happen if you planted it in the soil anyway?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrOrcslayer It would grow large quickly. I could try to keep it small by pruning regularly but don't see the point in growing it as the fruit is not appealing to me and the pruning would be a lot of maintenance. I don't want another mulberry (in terms of growth and aggressive roots) that I have to cut down in a few years because it is out-competing and killing off my sub-trropicals nearby. It's not the right tree for me and my yard. For others, it may be a great addition.

    Do you ever sell your seeds?

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry; I don't have seeds to sell. The seeds I showed in this video were from mangos that I was either gifted from a friend or ordered from a farm in Florida. I wanted to try specific varieties so I ordered a box of mangos, ate them, and then decided to plant the seeds to grow some seedlings instead of throwing them out. Various places sell seeds but its better to buy the fruit and then directly plant the seed after eating the fruit to ensure maximum seed freshness and viability.

    THIS SEED WILL NOT GROW TRUE TO PARENT IF IT IS NOT POLY EBRYONIC

    • @EnlightenmentGarden
      @EnlightenmentGarden  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I state the same a few times with the monoembryonic varities. Even polyembryonic varieties are not guaranteed to be true to seed but have a chance to be true to the parent. Cross-pollination from another variety almost guarantees genetic differences.

    • @ArizonaFruitTrees
      @ArizonaFruitTrees 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thats the only way we get new varieties, we can just graft them if we want the same as parent tree.
