Excellent points, thanks for sharing your views and experiences. Im in the old machinery category, and im constantly fixing, spending more than equipment is worth fixing. Its a vicious cycle that no one wants to talk about. Many ways to skin a cat and i think you nailed all of them about equipment in this video

Without a doubt I will say that we are all to blame for what our government has become, both our generation, and our parents. We allowed teacher unions to keep bad teachers in power, while letting them convince us we didn't need to teach History and Geography. We allowed morons and socialist's like Pelosi, Shumer, and Nadler to infiltrate our government without looking at what they really were, allowing them to continue, without term limits. Our president is doing what he can, while being hounded by these lawyers in congress, who care nothing about our family's, or our well being. I fear the country and our Democracy, has reached a breaking point. I personally wish that farmers like yourself, didn't have to struggle as you do,because we all depend on you, everyday! Thank you sir for your wisdom and for having the backbone to speak out about the facts and figures of living the life of a farmer. The agricultural world is a big mystery to those who don't live it. I myself was born and raised on cattle ranches and know first hand the pressures and problems of surviving year to year not knowing what the next year is going to bring. Wether you farm or ranch it's a thankless way of life to feed a world who thinks all the food they eat was made right there in the store lol SMH unbelievable but it is the reality of city people. God bless you sir, my hat is off to you.

Internet Trolls are the worse. You will never, ever be able to pleas everyone. You were right in the beginning. Anyone who farms has to be or just being middle class, has to be savvy on the finances and decision making. I too am not a farmer and our town has lost all of it's farming to money issues. Very sad. My first job was working on the local farm for several years and to see it all gone just angers me.

I think you’re doing a fine job. How you run your farm/business is your business, nobody else’s. I just enjoy watching farm related videos. Keep up the great work. We only have one new tractor in our operation which is a 6175R, everything else is either a 20, 30, or 40 series Deere’s. Love em all, can’t afford more than one new tractor at a time. Subscribed, we’re all in this farming poverty together. ;)

all good valid points. i bought a truck and flatbed back in the early 90's to haul steel, whatever i could fit on that 42 ft bed. it was way used a lot, ha! for the 5 yrs i owned it-it was constantly laying under it, turning wrenches, lots of head aches, that truck could not pay for the house, car insurance, its bills, etc. i know what ur talking about 150%. finally my wife gave me a choice, park it, or we was done after 17 yrs married then. i parked it, got a job with a good LTL freight company pulling doubles and working on the dock. that job was like what u said about the fella who made $35 an hr or the one that paid $10 a hr. it took several yrs to dig my way back out of the hole, but after 3 yrs, i paid all my truck bills off, and then was able to get a new pickup. so owning a truck and trying to do it with a old one and pay for the house doesn't work.
    great video-and i'm a new sub. too.

My son is an independent owner/operator with a W900L 2003 Kenworth tractor with a RGN trailerrated for a 90,000 load. We paid $36K for the tractor and over time we have invested probably about $50K in it - hard to tell since some idiot backed into it after he had taken care of all the "must do items" then some idiot backed into it. $47K later the engine was totally rebuilt with a CAT four year unlimited/ no deductible warranty and a rebuilt front end (not related to the accident). Then he added a fourth steerable axle and redid all the electrical wiring, replaced all the fuel lines, swapped the 13 speed transmission for an 18 speed and changed out the clutch for a stronger one. Yes, we put a lot of money into the rig but the increase in dollars/ loaded mile more than doubled. If my son wasn't a diesel mechanic and a bit OCD this would not make sense.
When the warranty runs out we will likely put the tractor in the shed and lease one with a full warranty. Why? Well, when the tractor is down, we make no money. A spare that has been well maintained can take up the slack.
Really it is no different than this video shows and I am grateful for the time taken to explain some of the issues. Personally, I think that if you are really mechanically skilled then used equipment makes sense. My friends tell me: " You know Grits, you are genetically, mechanically sterile!" So I would never do what my son does! We are doing things this way because we are starting a business to haul over dimentional/over weight loads.
Many thanks to all of you that do these videos. We have learned so much from them. May God bless you all.

Best financial decision ever made. Im NOT a mechanic and my business doesnt make money working on broken crap. With a lease the machine brakes, i call my dealer and within 24 hours i have a new machine back on the job MAKING MONEY!! What a F-ing concept!!! Jack of all trades dont make jack for money. We no longer waste time (and company $) fixing used stuff. Also we know exactly what equipment is going to cost each month. Just imagine if a guy owned one of these and the engine blowed up a year after its paid for. • @carl2755

If you think leasing is cheaper then you need to go back and redo your analysis. Don't get confused by the lower payments - that is just a cash flow issue, not cost. Leasing companies don't exist by losing money, so they know just as much and more about the cost of owning and using a tractor, and you can bet they made sure they are covered. It is like dealing with a casino - the house always wins. Leasing is designed for people that are not able buy so if you are able to borrow at a reasonable rate then you will come out ahead by buying. Right now with low interest rates, it makes a lot of sense to lock in a low cost by borrowing long-term money. Lots of sales people will try to convince you that leasing is better and that should be a red flag because sales people are not trying to do you a favor. They are working in their own self interest so they are telling you that leases are better because there is more money in it for them.

Hi nick .. thanks for the comment and the question... sounds exactly like my excavation company.... but there is one key difference .. like your company or my excavation company- you control how much you make - if you can stay busy you have the ability to take on more or less work - you have a end user that either agrees to pay what you want or what the market will bear ... much easier to hit profit margins than farming ...... with farming we pretty much get our product prices controlled by the govt ... farmers didnt ask for trump to crash their soybean markets - but a quick stroke of his pen and it did ...but at the same time ths world trade organization and USDA want cheap food.. raise it af cost of production so they give us just enough to float people along ...did you know the small portion that the last farm bailout only gave each farmer an average of about 7000 $$ - it was a joke... Thanks another excellent video. A lot of great information how each of us can run our operations different. I always say what works for you won't work for me. We all have different ways of doing things. A lot of people on TH-cam don't understand the challenges and sometimes we take a leap of faith to get through the year. Have an awesome weekend talk to you later.

These days if you're buying equipment on leap of faith you will not make it in farming

    • @PaulsonFarms
      @PaulsonFarms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, you don't take a leap of faith in farming, you do that and thats the fastest way to go broke. I've seen plenty of people try doing things that way, they now all are back to working for someone else. Unless you know your numbers down to the cent, you have absolutely no business in farming, farming is a 100% numbers game.

@@PaulsonFarms I usually don't respond to you. You could have your numbers down pat. But you can't control the weather that's the biggest factor in farming where you can fail. Being diverse in your operation is where it helps to survive in the farming industry.

    • @PaulsonFarms

@@TheFarmingLife Yea i know, you don't like me because I'm not a first generation farmer and I know what im talking about. Weather is a factor but it isn't the biggest factor where you can fail, the biggest think where you can fail is in poor management decisions, such as getting in over your head in equipment and debt. With the crop insurance and our APH even in disaster years we can come out really good, but again you have to know your numbers down to the cent. Diversity really doesn't help all that much, I'd rather do one thing really well then do multiple things poorly...

These are the same people that have no pictures or videos or links to jobs they have done..

Great video - a healthy reality check on current conditions/dilemmas for farmers - lets not forget prices was much higher for years maybe that`s why you guys see new shiny equipment still at many farms.....many farmers might even be running one newer combine compared to previously running 2 older combines. A whole other future issue is land leases which are doomed to come down to reflect current markets/prices.....
We can probably all agree that "farm bailouts" and thousand of farmers going bankrupt because Trump is playing games with other
peoples livelihoods/money is a fcking clownshow......Trump don`t give a shit about anyone or how many he will bankrupt that`s how he ran
his company from way back when he actually hired, sued and bankrupted hundreds of subcontractors....!!!
The corn and soybeans markets are slowly sliding from USA to countries like Brazil and Russia who are happy to jump in and deliver.
Prices will tank even if USA fights back and get some of those market shares back eventually......
My paycheck and your farm bailout is not really the same thing unless you farmers start paying me an extra paycheck
when you have a great harvest......you fixing and old disc has nothing to do with anything but your good work ethic.
And don`t tell the rest of us that even farmers who are doing alright without a farmbailout will say no thanks when they get the offer......
any farmers offered free money will take it and run to the bank or to John Deere......
Don`t forget farmbailouts are "socialism" just like public schools/roads/healthcare and so many other things.......just an fyi before you start yelling.

Thanks for taking time to comment ..... you are right on many things ...
I think, Trump, stuck his foot in his mouth on this whole "trade war" and now he doenst know what to do to fix it ....
And your right, trump didnt even pay his contractors he hired to build casinos .... personally, I like some things hes done - but disagree with many other things ... unfortunately, farmers are collateral damage in his so far unsuccessful trade war ...... trump is a bit of a "con man" so to speak, and borderline crooked - he will definitely do what makes him money .............. as far as a farm bailout - Its not about farmers - no one gives a crap about the farmers, it's about the banks and saving the bankers ... farmers are declaring bankruptcy at phenomenal rates - which are hurting the banks - so this bailout we are suppose to be getting is just another way to help bank - nothing more....... and that's if farmers even actually get any money ....... bottom line, farmers can not sustain their business at $8.50 soybeans and $3.50 corn..... I am going to have another video coming soon to explain more on all this ....stay tuned
