  • Part 2 in our video series on how to build your own DIY large solar generator. Before we start mounting all the various electronic components into the Pelican case for our solar Generator, it is a good idea to make sure everything is working correctly. We definitely would not want to discover we have a defective inverter only after mounting it and wiring everything else up around it.

    Many people make these builds extremely complicated, for a beginner, a nice little straightforward build is always welcome. This is one of the better videos out there. Thanks for taking the time and effort to throw this vid together for us, the setup is 123....

    Thanks for these videos. It's given me some more confidence to tackle a project like this myself. Only difference for me is I would like to use an inverter that can output 240v for a well pump, which is my main reason for wanting this setup. Can you recommend a particular brand of inverter that can do this? Any other tips would be much appreciated. My pump plugs in using a L6-20p type of plug.

      Bill McGee this is also the reason for my research into making a solar generator. Most residential well pumps have the ability to run off 120V or 240V. Mine has an end cap that is removable with a switch to 120V from 240V. It also has the wiring diagram inside the end cap.

    Amazon has different listings . This link you provided . Doesn't have the 2000 watt inverter . After searching amazon there is a 2000 watt krieger for a couple dollars less than the 3000 watt on the listing you linked to . Crazy 1000 watt difference for basicly the same price . In this case I would opt for the 3000 watt .

      Thanks and yep, I have been updating the links to the 3,000 model for the same reason. It fits in the same layout pattern as I used as well. Originally the 2kw model was significantly less than the 3kw. Not anymore!

    I noticed you didn’t ground the inverter. It isn’t necessary? I am building a portable rig as well and was wondering how to address the inverter grown issues because there is no where to browned on a mobile rig.

    • @ModernSurvivalists
      @ModernSurvivalists  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have read conflicting info on this. For a mobile setup, grounding is not really practical, and none of the vehicle mounted inverters really have a way to truly earth ground. For a permanent install grounding may make sense. However be very careful and understand the issues should you ever intent to back-feed or transfer switch power in a house with utility power. Ground loops and other shock hazards can be created in that situation. These types of inverters are best used as mobile or stand-alone off gird units.

    • @jimthvac100
      @jimthvac100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's advantages to not grounding a rig like this. If inverter is not grounded and you touch 120 volts on a piece of equipment you wouldn't necessarily get shocked because there's no path through the ground back to the inverter.

    What would be your opinion on getting 2 x 100 watt solar panels and the new KRIËGER® 4000 Watt 12V Power Inverter MET UL CSA? I would also upgrade the battery to a SLR125 VMAX AGM Deep Cycle 12V 125AH Battery for RENOGY PV SOLAR PANELS

      Those all are good products. You may have to arrange them in the case slightly different, but they should all work well together.

    Do they make larger capacity solar generators. im wanting to use it on the house to help lower the electric bill but ALSO be used for power backup in case of power outage. I have access to sunlight, not much on wind, unless I leave it out in a storm where the wind will generate power or rainfall power generators. Im looking for continuous running of the solar energy. Just a thought. Oh one other thing. With your power inverter, you MUST have an AIR source for cooling. DO NOT mount the inverter directly on the surface of the case or the heat and dust will overcome it and blow it out. I know of this because Im a truck driver and my 2000 watt inverter wasnt cooling because of no air flow.

    • @ModernSurvivalists
      @ModernSurvivalists  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this same design can be used with the 3,000 watt Kreiger inverter as well. It will fit in the same layout. This build series also has a followup video on how to add additional panels and more battery capacity using quick connects to keep everything portable.
      I have been using the inverter for quite some time now and have not ran into any heat issues. It is designed to be mounted directly on whatever surface you are using, has internal fans that kick on when airflow is needed, and in the event it did ever overheat it will automatically shut down before damage occurs. This has not ever happened for me however.

    • @thomasmorris2069
      @thomasmorris2069 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I know that. I had Cobra power inverters from 800 watt up to 2000 watt and the clearance from the floor surface to the casing of the unit was only 1/4 to 1/2 in, but then I went and added 2 strips each side and increased the height from the floor giving it a 3" air flow under it. It worked better than just flat floor mounting, fyi. How do you get these panels and how do you calculate the amount of solar panels and since it is mounted into the circuit breaker panel box, how much is sent to the Power Company?

    Hey dude would the inverter work if it hook up to the load of your charge controller without the battery just pure solar power to charge controller to load of charge controller to inverter to your load of inverter?

    • @ModernSurvivalists
      @ModernSurvivalists  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it would. The charge controller monitors the battery voltage in order to decide to charge or not. If it cannot detect a battery I don't think it would attempt to charge. What kind of application were you wanting to try this with? There are devices such as solar pumps where the panel is connected directly to the load, and the pump only runs when there is sunlight. The motor has to be sized to match the panel, in both voltage and current capacity.

      Please feel free to message me at ebxrocks@yahoo.com
      I'll respond from my gmail account (Which I won't reveal for public consumption), because I would love to share with you the approach I took. I'll send you a few pics. My system is much simpler because its meant for smaller scale applications. That being said, I'm in no way in competition with you. Truth be told, I HIGHLY RESPECT what you've done, and the quality of your work is excellent!
      As I examined your box in depth, I wondered if you could get everything-less the 2nd battery-into a Pelican 1440 Case. You might want to check that out. You'll save space AND money.

    That 55 amp hour battery you can only use about 27 amp hours of it because so you can only use half a capacity of lead acid batteries before you damage them. That table saw would deplete that battery in about 10 minutes a continuous use. it would take about four and a half hours in perfect soon for that 100 watt solar panel to recharge that battery. A realistic use for small solar and batteries like this is going to be very low-power devices. Consider switching to LFeP04 it takes 50% more charging time to charge lead acid batteries as it does LFeP04. And with LFeP04 batteries you can take them down to to 100% and still get 10 times more life out of them compared to lead acid. There are plans and examples on TH-cam to make your own lithium batteries and save yourself half the cost of buying an off the shelf one.

    You are testing a battery, and assuming the solar panel can actually support that battery.. How long does it take to charge? That is the only significant test required.. I highly doubt a single 100W panel is enough to charge the battery effectively.

    • @ModernSurvivalists
      @ModernSurvivalists  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I discuss this in the video. A single 100W solar panel can easily charge the battery over the course of a day. It depends on the conditions (sunny vs cloudy) and how many load you are using through out the day as well. My system uses quick connects to easily expand both the number of panels, as well as the number of batteries so it can scale with your needs.
