Daddy freeze abeg help me ask the pastors about all the other obligations and rules from God wey dey Old Testament. Why is it only tithes obligation that they are holding on to. This is a very serious question that has to be addressed. Are we allowed to choose which of the Old Testament to follow and disregard the rest that does not suit.

This Melchizedek was the same one to whom Abraham paid tithe (See Genesis 14:18-20). Melchizedek was a similitude of Jesus. How? Hebrews 7:2; the Hebrew name Melchizedek means KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, and the Lord is both God and King of Righteousness (see Ezra 9:15, Psalm 7:9, Psalm 50:6, Romans 1:17, Romans 3:22, Revelation 16:7). This same Melchizedek was the King of Salem, and which means in Hebrew, KING OF PEACE, and the Lord is the King/Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6). Please take note that when Melchizedek was being described as king, the small letter “k” was used for him as king, but when his name was being broken down, capital letter “K” was introduced, which implies that God was being referred to. This same Melchizedek was said to have no beginning nor end, and the Lord has no beginning nor end because He is the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8, Revelation 22:13). 3) Hebrews 7:11 - Here, the writer of Hebrews posts a very vital question, and he says, Why does another priest come after the order of Melchizedek, and not after the order of Aaron? This is because the Aaronic priesthood offered sacrifices, and these sacrifices were a pointer to the ultimate sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The Aaronic priesthood was prophetically symbolizing that Jesus was going to die as the ultimate sacrifice. Had Jesus become a priest after the order of Aaron, then his ministry and impact would have ended after his death on the cross (which was what the Aaronic priesthood emphasized prophetically). So, His Priesthood forever is after the order of Melchizedek. Since He is a Priest after the order of Melchizedek that means His ministry is after the pattern of Melchizedek, and so like Melchizedek, He receives tithes. 4) Hebrews 7:8 - This scripture implies that men receive tithes on behalf of Jesus. 5) Matthew 23:23 - Contrary to what some blind critics are putting forward as arguments, that Jesus spoke against tithe, I would advise them to please get an Oxford English Dictionary and an English printed bible (or better still the original Hebrew bible), and please ensure the bible is not upside down while reading it. In Matthew 23:23, Jesus rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees because they were being hypocritical. They paid tithe of their goods, but they neglected the more important matters of faith, judgment, mercy and the Word. Then Jesus said, these they ought to do (i.e. paying of their tithes) without neglecting the other very important things. Folks, Jesus did not say they should not pay tithe. You say Jesus never collected tithes? Did the bible not say that if all the acts of Jesus were documented there wouldn’t be enough books to cover them? (John 21:25). At least we see Jesus sitting in front at the temple one time to closely monitor what and how the people gave (Mark 12:41). This implies that He had interest in the people’s givings, not for his personal enrichment but that fruits and blessings may abound to their account (Philippians 4:16&17). 6) Finally, if anyone doesn’t want to pay his or her tithe, please don’t. If your giving is not from your heart then you’re just wasting it. Am amazed that some Christians would be swayed by some fellows ranting all over the place that people shouldn’t pay their tithes. The bible even says that even the very elect would be deceived in the last days. So my beloved, if you don’t want to pay tithe then don’t, for God loves a cheerful giver who gives not out of necessity but out of love (2 Corinthians 9:7). If you think it’s your tithes and offerings that God needs to get His work done on earth, then please keep your money and see if God would not raise even stones to do His work, and then watch the difference between those who think they are so important and those who make their resources available for God’s Kingdom. There maybe some things wrong with the ways we practise Christianity in Nigeria and the entire Africa as a whole, but that in itself is not the cause of the problem in the nations, there are a lots of positive things the church has done for Nigeria, there is an urgent need for complete overhauling of our political system, educational system our values etc but more importantly is the fact that if we want genuine and lasting development our mindset, our outlook to life need to change, we must concentrate on thing that add real values to our lives and the nation not all these fleeting pleasures and vanities, once there genuine awareness and change in our mentality and outlook it will affect every areas of our society.
