I have 2 beams work lights, a 12" and a 24". Both seem to be growing the plants well. The full spectrum works better that the all white led one tank came with. And I love the price. Have a blessed day.
I have been using LED strips around the perimeter of my tank under the plastic lip for about 2 years now. They're not super bright so probably not great for heavily planted tanks, but having a bunch of color options and patterns makes the tank look really great! It's also great not having anything on top of the tank. And for only $20 for the strip, it was a good value compared to some of the more expensive "official" aquarium lights. Thanks for your tips!

I really appreciate the options under $100 for new fish keepers. Working in a LFS, it’s difficult to justify expensive lights to someone just getting started. They are usually more focused on the fish they want to keep, so the first goal is to help them enjoy and be successful with what they can afford.
If you want the most bang for your buck and you can do simple wiring just convert T12 or T8 fixtures over to LED. It's very simple and fast once you do one. Then buy the LED tube lights that fit the sockets in whatever spectrum,type and watts you want.
One budget lighting solution that works awesome are high CRI SMD5630 LED strips. U-Home/Marswell are the ones I've used (5500-6000K 95CRI). You get a 16 foot reel for about $35 (each foot of light is about 7W). I'd recommend the 24V strips, since it reduces the power supply current needed to run them. All you need is a 24V 5A power supply, some aluminum bar or sheet around 1/16" thick to mount it on, and you can create a light fixture that will fit any tank dimensions you need. Colors of the fish and decor look outstanding under them too.

Ya, in your case I might go shop LEDs. Just make sure they are the color temp you want (maybe get a shorter strand of a few different spectrums and see what you like).

I use a Current USA freshwater plus light that i am very pleased with. It was cheaper than the Finnex or Fluval and the quality, look as well as functionality was a huge selling factor for me with the Current USA light.

i mainly focus on fish not an aquascaper . but i want to give my fish a suitable environment and also get their vibrant colours out by giving a good setup . so i do simple setups like biotopes with some plants . for lighting what should i choose . warm white , cool white or white RGB lights . what is the most effective for both fish and plants . can you explain it sir
Depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. If you have plants with that kind of depth you may need the Kessil Lights (very expensive though). Fluval 3.0 may be ok for most beginner plants though. If there are no plants and you don't want to spend a lot of money the Hygger lights are pretty good.

What i noticed is, my light doesnt hit the fishes body at the right angles to really show their colors. If i shine a light on the side of my fish, their colors POP (talking about my purple mosaic guppies and green rasboras) but the light above them, doesnt show their color. This being said, i am using the aqueon LED hood light that came with the 55g. Is it because its a cheap LED or is there a way to angle a light to shine in kinda sideways?
Fluval 3.0 does not have some of the features you have claimed. It does not have lightning or cloudy feature. You are confusing it with the Fluval Aquasky.
So the led light that came with my 55g kit broke, the company replaced it but also said the replacement doesnt come with a guarantee. Well just a few months, one section is out already! Im considering the finnex but i want a glass top, will it work ok thru the glass?

is the ability to 'ramp up' the lights for the day and 'dim down' the lights important? (simulating day/night cycle) i've seen some timer products that can do that but i'm not seeing many talking about this as to if its important?

I am setting up a 29 gal standard fully planted tank and was going to use the Fluval 3.0 plant light. It is 32 watts and according to online specs, this is just over 1 watt per gal which is considered low light for plants. You stated that it is a medium light. Can I put my older Fluval Aquasky 2.0 light next to it to increase the density?
OK, this was a very good vid, BUT i want to know about "lighting" NOT from what it looks like to humans, but how it feels to the fish... for example the tank is at "regular brightness" and at 10:00pm it goes to full dark. if my wife did that to me while i was in the middle of looking for another algae taco ide be mad. comedy aside, if the fish-s stress level is important shouldn't we use a slow fade to a tiny night light? i remember watching some breeders fish room vid and he kept saying... "be the fish, what is their view"
I don't think the lights going off right away is bad, but maybe them coming on right away might be a little more stressful. For our fish room that will only happen in one section (provides the initial light in the room) and then the rest of the sections don't go from complete darkness to light.
Built in timer is a huge factor in making your decision IMO. If not adding a cheap timer is a game changer! I’ve had Beamsworks lights last 7+ years, great value.

Does the material that tank is made affect how deep the light penetrates, I got a clear for life 40 gallon with built in filter and the top of it it's acrylic, does not come of so I would have to put the light on top of the acrylic lid, should I get a stronger light than what I need I want to have different kind of plants and a carpet,
Granted, leds are better than fluorescents with bulkiness, electricity usage, brightness, and even color spectrum (including spectrum settings and setting options in general), though I'd argue with your point about flourescents dimming over time; There's more than enough reviews describing that BOTH leds and fluorescents dim over time. That said, if this is "Aquarium lighting 101", why does it seem like you're just selling lights rather than talking about your understanding and experience with lighting in general? And beamswork might be cheap, but you're forgetting that modern fluorescent ballasts can work with led replacement tubes. For around 40", the cheaper beamswork light is about the same price as the standard shop light + 2 led bulbs. The advantage is that if a light goes out or dims over time, get a new bulb(s) rather than replace the whole thing as you would have to with beamswork or any of these others. In other words, if you're not sure you want to stay in the hobby, I'd go for the shop light, since if things don't work out, you can always install the light in a utility room or something so the light isn't wasted. Also, the cheaper beamswork doesn't give you a bunch of options anyway, and likely doesn't put out as much light. If the shop light is putting out too much, take out one of the bulbs, or even consider laying a shade film on top of your tank cover (you could also lay different colored films onto the cover for spectrum selection). And of course we're not even considering the idea of using standard super cheap medium base screw-in non-dimmable leds with the diffusor caps removed for a more concentrated light. For my riparium, I actually use cheap out-door 90 watt equivalent GE basic led flood lights; With their caps removed, they actually turn into spot lights because there's a built in lens before the diffusor for whatever reason. Anything else would likely be at least a few times more expensive, and these things grow plants just fine. Of course I know this isn't a DIY channel, but very few people talk about these options, and they should, seeing as how the aquarium hobby is a price gouging rip-off racket to put it mildly.
I’ve actually talked about shop lights a few times in various videos. The problem I have with many of them is they often put out too much light, which causes algae and/or the color spectrum is off and makes the tank look unappealing.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Such an incredibly easy fix man... Remove a bulb, and if it's still too bright, apply a shade film, like I said. Better to have too much light than not enough, since there are multiple solutions for shading. You can also just raise the thing up higher to reduce the intensity, provided you don't have tanks on top of it. People have been using shop lights forever, and still do, so I'd say it depends. And granted, you only have a few color spectrum options with standard household lighting, but it's hard to say the tank still won't look good with some daylight bulbs, though it might look better with a fluval, or whatever. I'm just so sick of the aquarium industry, I almost just disown it all.

I recently purchased a new aquarium that came with a LED white light bar on the lid. Everytime it is On, my Butterfly Balloon Molly starts to freeze up, shakes like it is having a seizure and swims vertically. When I turn the light Off it resumes to normal behavior. Is it because of the Light or is it a condition of the Molly? Thank you

I've a question for you Jason. I have a lonely Celebes rainbow Male. He's the only one left from a group I had. The other have died from old age. He seems perfectly healthy however all he does, all day, every day is glass surfing. I feel really sorry for him but I cannot get him any friends. What would you do?

If i put my black water semi planted tank on balcony and knowing its receiving a bit of light from outside, is it fine to turn the light on at night and turn it off until morning? Knowing it’s bright in the morning, I couldn’t mimic the day and night when I turn the light during night. Doe s that mean I should turn the lights on in the morning?
I have had no problems with the beamswork lights. Currently I have the 10,000 K full spectrum beamswork light and grow hi tech plants with no problem whatsoever. But I have to say that the light is on a relatively shallow aquarium, maybe somewhere around 12 inches or so high and I am using DIY CO2, and for over four months I have had no problems in growing any hi tech plant. The plants grow fast and lush. I have had this beamswork light on this aquarium for at least two years and it’s still growing plants very well. For a deeper aquarium I would put two beamswork lights on aquarium, or spend more money and get a more powerful light.
Enjoyed this review/comparison. Understandably it's American based. I wonder your non American viewer percentile. In Australia. Most of these brands are massively driven up in price (not including exchange rate). I'm a big fan of DIY or even cheap eBay full spectrum LED light bars that are awesome but don't have a brand name. The pictures under the Kessil lights really POPPED out! They made quite a difference. Not sure I'm ready to go for that, but I love all the ideas you have here, and I think I need to upgrade my lid and lights from the fluorescent one that we've had for years...

Would have been nice if he'd mention spot lights for ripariums too, but I guess he just doesn't have experience in that area.

I built my DIY LED strip light with LED dimmer. It work great on my fish tanks with a light dimmer control. 🐠🐠🐠
I have some green cobra guppies and they have a metallic look when the light isn't on them, is it because that the lights aren't LEDs, I also have a new tank and im going to set it up, and it has LEDs. Will it improve the look of my fish with more metallic colors
It depends on the light. For the most part LEDs look better than old school fluorescent lights.
I have a 20g regular tank. Planted. I don't know wich is better between hygger full spectrum 18 to 24 inch (14 watts). Or hygger full espectrym 24 to 30 inch (16 watts).
The length of tank is just stucked in the middle of these 2 sizes (24 inch).

So i have a 6 foot long tank and all lights are high price that i can't afford. I bought a LED light from walmart. It's rated at 5000k. My plants are all look great and i have plants growing my fish look great.

That usually creates a lot of algae and possibly some temperature swings.
Which is the best L.E.D light for a 60 L hexagon tank. The lid is a single piece of plastic (doesn't have a feeding hatch), so I have to remove the whole lid for feeding, & maintenance.
The hygger lights are pretty good .
I use the sun using reflectors... no elec bill

I use a Current USA freshwater plus light that i am very pleased with. It was cheaper than the Finnex or Fluval and the quality, look as well as functionality was a huge selling factor for me with the Current USA light.

You can, but it almost always leads to algae issues.

Depends on your price point. The lights featured here will show fish off well and allow plants to grow.

Depends on what you are looking for and how much you want to spend. If you have plants with that kind of depth you may need the Kessil Lights (very expensive though). Fluval 3.0 may be ok for most beginner plants though. If there are no plants and you don't want to spend a lot of money the Hygger lights are pretty good.

What i noticed is, my light doesnt hit the fishes body at the right angles to really show their colors. If i shine a light on the side of my fish, their colors POP (talking about my purple mosaic guppies and green rasboras) but the light above them, doesnt show their color. This being said, i am using the aqueon LED hood light that came with the 55g. Is it because its a cheap LED or is there a way to angle a light to shine in kinda sideways?
Ya, that’s the case for a lot of fish. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about the angle.

Fluval 3.0 does not have some of the features you have claimed. It does not have lightning or cloudy feature. You are confusing it with the Fluval Aquasky.

So the led light that came with my 55g kit broke, the company replaced it but also said the replacement doesnt come with a guarantee. Well just a few months, one section is out already! Im considering the finnex but i want a glass top, will it work ok thru the glass?

Thanks for the videos. I'm setting up a new 20 gal long. My current tank (46 gal bow) has been running for about 15 years, so decided it was time to add a 2nd one. Since I'm buying new equipment, I'm going back and watching your videos for lights, HOBs, suitable fish for 20 gal long, etc. Can you tell me what the rocks are at 4:20 in this video? They are beautiful and my tanks are setup as natural scapes so these would work great.

is the ability to 'ramp up' the lights for the day and 'dim down' the lights important? (simulating day/night cycle) i've seen some timer products that can do that but i'm not seeing many talking about this as to if its important?

I am setting up a 29 gal standard fully planted tank and was going to use the Fluval 3.0 plant light. It is 32 watts and according to online specs, this is just over 1 watt per gal which is considered low light for plants. You stated that it is a medium light. Can I put my older Fluval Aquasky 2.0 light next to it to increase the density?
You can, but I still think the Fluval 3.0 is probably going to be sufficient. You can always remove the aquasky if you get too much algae.
OK, this was a very good vid, BUT i want to know about "lighting" NOT from what it looks like to humans, but how it feels to the fish... for example the tank is at "regular brightness" and at 10:00pm it goes to full dark. if my wife did that to me while i was in the middle of looking for another algae taco ide be mad. comedy aside, if the fish-s stress level is important shouldn't we use a slow fade to a tiny night light? i remember watching some breeders fish room vid and he kept saying... "be the fish, what is their view"
I don't think the lights going off right away is bad, but maybe them coming on right away might be a little more stressful. For our fish room that will only happen in one section (provides the initial light in the room) and then the rest of the sections don't go from complete darkness to light.

Built in timer is a huge factor in making your decision IMO. If not adding a cheap timer is a game changer! I’ve had Beamsworks lights last 7+ years, great value.

Sure - it won't harm your microbes or plants. The beneficial bacteria are attached to surfaces and generally aren't found in the water column.
Does the material that tank is made affect how deep the light penetrates, I got a clear for life 40 gallon with built in filter and the top of it it's acrylic, does not come of so I would have to put the light on top of the acrylic lid, should I get a stronger light than what I need I want to have different kind of plants and a carpet,
It doesn’t have a major impact.
Granted, leds are better than fluorescents with bulkiness, electricity usage, brightness, and even color spectrum (including spectrum settings and setting options in general), though I'd argue with your point about flourescents dimming over time; There's more than enough reviews describing that BOTH leds and fluorescents dim over time. That said, if this is "Aquarium lighting 101", why does it seem like you're just selling lights rather than talking about your understanding and experience with lighting in general? And beamswork might be cheap, but you're forgetting that modern fluorescent ballasts can work with led replacement tubes. For around 40", the cheaper beamswork light is about the same price as the standard shop light + 2 led bulbs. The advantage is that if a light goes out or dims over time, get a new bulb(s) rather than replace the whole thing as you would have to with beamswork or any of these others. In other words, if you're not sure you want to stay in the hobby, I'd go for the shop light, since if things don't work out, you can always install the light in a utility room or something so the light isn't wasted. Also, the cheaper beamswork doesn't give you a bunch of options anyway, and likely doesn't put out as much light. If the shop light is putting out too much, take out one of the bulbs, or even consider laying a shade film on top of your tank cover (you could also lay different colored films onto the cover for spectrum selection). And of course we're not even considering the idea of using standard super cheap medium base screw-in non-dimmable leds with the diffusor caps removed for a more concentrated light. For my riparium, I actually use cheap out-door 90 watt equivalent GE basic led flood lights; With their caps removed, they actually turn into spot lights because there's a built in lens before the diffusor for whatever reason. Anything else would likely be at least a few times more expensive, and these things grow plants just fine. Of course I know this isn't a DIY channel, but very few people talk about these options, and they should, seeing as how the aquarium hobby is a price gouging rip-off racket to put it mildly.
I’ve actually talked about shop lights a few times in various videos. The problem I have with many of them is they often put out too much light, which causes algae and/or the color spectrum is off and makes the tank look unappealing.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Such an incredibly easy fix man... Remove a bulb, and if it's still too bright, apply a shade film, like I said. Better to have too much light than not enough, since there are multiple solutions for shading. You can also just raise the thing up higher to reduce the intensity, provided you don't have tanks on top of it. People have been using shop lights forever, and still do, so I'd say it depends. And granted, you only have a few color spectrum options with standard household lighting, but it's hard to say the tank still won't look good with some daylight bulbs, though it might look better with a fluval, or whatever. I'm just so sick of the aquarium industry, I almost just disown it all.

The Fluvals and Kessils are the best (but most expensive options). I also like the Hygger and FInnex Stingray 2 as less expensive options.

I recently purchased a new aquarium that came with a LED white light bar on the lid. Everytime it is On, my Butterfly Balloon Molly starts to freeze up, shakes like it is having a seizure and swims vertically. When I turn the light Off it resumes to normal behavior. Is it because of the Light or is it a condition of the Molly? Thank you

I have a lonely Celebes rainbow Male. He's the only one left from a group I had. The other have died from old age. He seems perfectly healthy however all he does, all day, every day is glass surfing. I feel really sorry for him but I cannot get him any friends.

I had the exact same situation with one of them too. I had him in a tank with other random fish - that's about all I could do.

If i put my black water semi planted tank on balcony and knowing its receiving a bit of light from outside, is it fine to turn the light on at night and turn it off until morning? Knowing it’s bright in the morning, I couldn’t mimic the day and night when I turn the light during night. Doe s that mean I should turn the lights on in the morning?
You'll have to see how much algae you get? The wild card is what will happen with the outside light.

I have had no problems with the beamswork lights. Currently I have the 10,000 K full spectrum beamswork light and grow hi tech plants with no problem whatsoever. But I have to say that the light is on a relatively shallow aquarium, maybe somewhere around 12 inches or so high and I am using DIY CO2, and for over four months I have had no problems in growing any hi tech plant. The plants grow fast and lush. I have had this beamswork light on this aquarium for at least two years and it’s still growing plants very well. For a deeper aquarium I would put two beamswork lights on aquarium, or spend more money and get a more powerful light.

Algae growth is usually a combination of too much light or lights left on too long combined with nitrate levels that are elevated.
The most confusing step to this new....after 40 years... keeper is substrate. It's a leap of faith for which way to go. Hopefully they all work

The pictures under the Kessil lights really POPPED out! They made quite a difference. Not sure I'm ready to go for that, but I love all the ideas you have here, and I think I need to upgrade my lid and lights from the fluorescent one that we've had for years...
What is recommended for a planted 55 gallon. Most reviews I can find is for a lower tank. I need the light that will get to the bottom.

I would go with full spectrum for plants. Plus, they just look better in general.
Awesome video! I was wondering about what light to get for my new 36 gallon high tank. It's so high that my clip on light just doesn't penetrate very deep into the water column to reach my plants, so I don't really know what to do. Recommendations?
Depends on the types of plants, but either the Fluval 3.0 for plants that need higher light or you could look at Hygger or Finnex Stingray 2.
