Too late. You're dead, Bryan. Great sense of humour makes all the difference. And one of the reasons to look forward to the next videos. Thank you from OGKK Russia, Moscow.
Sometimes we get in a little bit of trouble for not being super serious, but we like to approach karate with joy and an open heart! An OGKK brother from Russia! We are honoured to have you join us here on our little channel 🙇🏻♀️ Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment - we really appreciate it 💮
Another martial friend from Germany! We really must visit one day - lots of people to meet (and delicious pastries and bread to sample). We love that Goju Ryu is so nuanced and rich in detail - it continues to reward, even after decades of study.
Thank you very much for this great idea, the combination of kakie and Kata - in my opinion it's a top possibility to develop a realistic Bunkai, especially because Goju-ryu acts generally in closed distance and our Katas include many stuff of grappling. (uhh, my English.... so sorry). I love the humor in your presentation! 👍😊
Yay, so glad you enjoyed it and found it useful! Goju Ryu loves to close the distance, and Kakie is that bridge. PS - your English is wonderful! I wish I could be as fluent in German or Greek as you are in English 👏🏻👏🏻
cooool! What a nice idea to use movements from kata into kakie...never done this before! Thanks Sensei, we have this kata in common (I practice in an dojo related to the Ryukyu Bujutsu Kenkyu Doyukai from Shihan Toshihiro Oshiro, practically Matsubayashi-Ryu)...you call it Gekisai we Fukyugata Ni or Kihon Kata san.. I will try it out with my buddies, we train together in different martial arts but they all love Karate 👍. Stay safe, greetings from Germany💪🏽💪🏽
What a lovely message to receive from someone who shares the same journey! This is such a great technique to do with friends - we're sure that you will make it your own 💪💪💪 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, we really appreciate it! 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
Production technique is always getting better! Love the sponge bob moment! Nice to see you are incorporating sticky hands. Most dojos, dojangs and other schools never show this except for Tai Chi and some Wing Chung. Seems to me a logical progression from technique to one step to sticking hands to randori. Try it blindfolded some time, go slow but a lot of fun.
Thank you! The more feature I discover, the better! Couldn't resist with the SpongeBob moment - I had to cut a fair amount of footage from that moment - what better way to sum up the passing of time? And it's a nice little treat for anyone who watches past the first 10% of the video. Kakie really should be more widely known than it is - its such an awesome technique, and we teach it to kids so that they can learn sensitivity early.
Guys I just want to thank you so much for the great content and energy you bring. We have a very similar view of karate ad we hail from the same school and the atmosphere you bring makes me feel like I'm with you there. I'm sure the channel will grow immensely over time if you keep up this great work! Lots of love from Scotland!
Ah, Davide! Thank you for this truly lovely and generous comment! It's one of the best features of this modern era that we can share in karate across the planet, and that we can meet such like-minded people ☺️ We are honoured to share this karate journey with you 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️
I have to learn how to do this.... I normally write more than the default "Thanks". 🤣 I love kakie. It has really taught me to simultaneously anticipate and adapt to the other person's movement. Fast forward many years, kakie is also useful in anticipating a squirming puppy dog's movements so as to not drop him-clearly an application of karate in daily life outside of the dojo. As always, many thanks, Sensei! I've been wanted to contribute to the channel for a long time. I'm glad you added the "super thanks" functionality.
Even the simple "thanks" is more than enough, good sir! YT still picks it up as an engagement, and you've always made the time to watch and comment 🙇🏻♀️ Also, puppies! 🤩 Also - we were very lucky to be chosen for the beta testing of the Super Thanks button - it will be rolled out to all creators only later in the year, and we are so glad to have it as a tips jar. Thank you so much for supporting us, it is deeply appreciated 🙇🏻♀️ And lastly - hope your healing journey is going well!
@UCV1%F0%9F%99%87Lb9bNrTf2NGdLMO2F_Bg We couldn't see on the back-end of YT that you had given us such an incredibly generous super thank you - we are so blown away, and so humbled to receive this. It is our first such super thank you, and in our currency, it really is a lot. It works out to fees for two students for a month, and it will go to supporting the kids who love karate, but whose parents are really struggling. We have a few (because once, we were those kids too) and we will put it in the kitty for those who are on what we call 'dojo account'. Thank you, so much and truly. We don't know if we truly deserve it, but we are so humbled and happy.
@@GojuRyuKarateCentre , you're very welcome. It's the least I could do. I figured it was a way to "catch up" with all the previous content on this channel. Additionally, I saw it as a way to "pay it back" into the Goju Ryu community as my old Sensei didn't charge any money and taught classes as a volunteer at the YMCA (he runs a sawmill to pay the bills). My YMCA fees were only $15 per month back in the 1990s and early 2000s. Its not much now, but as a kid from a poor background, $15 was not only a fair price, but also something I could easily afford. If the price was much higher, I might not have even started on this wonderful martial arts journey. Today, I see dojo fees go upwards of $100 per month or more, especially at the McDojos. What I see on this channel is nearly the same as what I was learning back in the day. My job (active duty military) has kept me travelling and as such, I have not lived anywhere near my old dojo in many, many years. As far as I know, my old Sensei is still teaching just as he always has, (though with government COVID policy restrictions, I don't know how weird it was recently). Seeing this channel and seeing the content brought back many fond memories, plus I am learned many new things as well as clearing out some of the old cobwebs in my memory. I think the first video that got me hooked onto this channel was "The Anatomy of 3 Kicks" (my thoughts when I first watched it were, "Yes! Finally, someone is teaching kicks 'correctly'!) . The fact that you teach techniques so similarly to my old Sensei, is a testament to his and your mutual Sensei, the great Chinen Sensei. As for my health and recovery, I am pleased to announce that the chishi is back on the menu of training options. My recovery overall is going very well. At 45 years old, I'm not the "spring chicken" I once was, but at the same time, I'm stronger than most people my age, despite my injuries. For this, much of the credit goes to many years of karate training. Again, many thanks to you both for putting this channel together.
It is so fascinating to me (Zoe) that Sensei Chinen has brought together so many people all over the world, though he was not a particularly famous instructor. He died far too young, and what a loss to the Goju ryu, and wider, karate world. At the least, he lives on in Ché, who was admittedly his golden favourite here in SA whenever he visited. That we can keep his legacy alive through Ché's teachings, and continue teaching karate to all, is the greatest honour of our lives. Your Sensei is the epitome of what is best in a teacher - generosity, patience and knowledge. I know I wouldn't be here if Sensei Mary hadn't let me keep training despite the fact that I had no money (I was barely making rent and petrol. I lived like a Spartan for two years) - she believed that I was worth more to the dojo than just my monthly fee. We are the sum of those who believe in us, and to pay it forward is to pay them all back. We are so grateful to share this journey with you, and we hope to make it last as long as we can :) PS: So happy to hear that your recovery is going so well! All the hojo undo has paid off, and to be able to do it again after a long period of injury must be wonderful. Love to hear this good news!
This is really good. In the art I practice, a complete flow drill basically turns around in the middle and the roles reverse - then it just goes back and forth like that, so the flow becomes continuous. I am interested in adapting Kakie in that regard - so thank you for the video.
Ah, thank you so much! We are releasing another kakie video in a couple of weeks, so please do watch this space for more. Thank you for watching and commenting - much appreciated :)
Great video on Kakie and the application of Gekki Sai Dai ichi techniques. It is interesting to note that this Okinawan exercise was derived from the Chinese exercises of "Koki" or "Chi Sao" which also means to push hands. This is a great sensitivity drill to help one to feel the intentions of your opponent.
Finally, we have the Chinese names for this concept! We actually teach this to kids, if only the pushing and pulling and not so much the additional attacks and blocks. They love it! Can't wait until we can all get back to it properly 🙇🏻♀️ Thank you so much for commenting and watching!
Great video as always, love the music too. The Kakie drill here is truly in keeping with the Goju-ryu tradition, short, straight-forward and practical, going in for the kill the moment a window is there - no fancy flowery flow really. Clearly the kakie here is meant to enhance the practitioner's ability, not to show-case fancy flowery fantastical moves (unlike some "experts" on youtube).
Kakie is such a wonderful tool, and one we really miss doing as a dojo - we really do hope that we will be able to return to it sooner rather than later! Sometimes I envy some of those big TH-camrs, and the karate doors that must open for them, but the more we make our stuff, and always from a place of love, we're so happy with the followers we have, and the kindred spirits we are meeting here in our comments 🥰
Excellent explanation of the principles of kakie, hikite and flow using Gekki Sai Dai Ichi. This type of training adds 'life' to kata which I feel is at best lacking in a lot of schools.
Thank you so much for the kind words, Dan! Kata has such a bad reputation because it is so often taught as just a sequence, just a choreography, and not treated as the living textbook that it is. If we can add vitality to kata, then we're hopefully on the right path :)
Thank you Sensei. Wonderful video. I have a deep passion for Goju Ryu and practical self defense stemming from the mid '90s. Your passion for sharing and teaching is much appreciated. God bless you.
Sadly we don't have any experience of this amazing style 😭 but it would be so interesting to do a collab with someone from Uechi Ryu - we'll look around and see if anyone wants to do one with us 🥋 Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, much appreciated 🙇🏻♀️🙇🏻♀️

Kakie goes with tensho/rokkishu as a hand and a glove. That's what I was looking forward to after your last great work on tensho-gata. And what do I see? Your uke being punished with uke. Yet again.
