I like the idea of a Joke villain whose purposely trying to seem like a complete screw up to mask their actual intentions. Makes it feel like we're laughing with him instead of about him. Also for some reason the name *The Fool* made me think of Tarot cards and how fun it would be if he created his own gang that includes lesser and unrespected villains who fit into the Major Arcana. Kinda like a more mythical version of the Royal Flush Gang.
He's got a pretty good design, specially by Golden Age standards. The overly-whacky look can easily be an eyesore... but somehow this guy pulls it off pretty well. I love his lanky physique, dorky hair and penchant for short pants and knee-high white socks.
I like this guy! He should show up in Gotham or other Detective type DC heroes to commit some seemingly random/pointless crimes, only what he steals turns out to be collectables worth millions to the right people.
The thing with the Fool is that he is inherently small-scale. You couldn't do a big, sweeping story with him; his character wouldn't support it. He is a burglar with a gimmick, and that gimmick depends on people underestimating him and thinking him silly - which only really works in exactly the sort of stories he appeared in; short, one-shot capers. So he has limited appeal these days, when we seem to be addicted to giant, multi-issue sagas where half the world blows up. But he would certainly be refreshing as a break from those - maybe as part of a team-up. You mentioned the Toyman; I think those two might work well together. (Incidentally, if we're talking about the Golden Age GL's rogues gallery, you missed someone. What about the Gambler? He didn't have a huge amount of appearances, but he did probably make the most impact out of any of the classic Alan Scott villains, second to Solomon Grundy.)
Or imagine that he is actually fooling everyone around him, and plotted for long time series of seemingly joke crimes, to mask his actual grand scale plan set up in parts every time he did anything
That would certainly be a good set-up for a single story, but it wouldn't do much for the character in the long run, I think. He can't ALWAYS be setting up for something huge - even the villains that specialize in 'huge', like the Joker, aren't always doing that - so once the first story's over, he's back to the same old schtick. You could get a decent story out of it, sure, but it wouldn't change anything.@@kociarzultimate384

These kinds of entries are the highlight of the forgotten villains series imo. It really brings to light just how many stories are laying in waiting to be told. Alot of public domain comics face similar issues, where in fact there are many noteworthy characters, though having made a few appearances they never go onto be cataloged on sites like the pdsh wiki.

Personnaly i think you can still make The Fool a green lantern because they are so much green lantern, that you can aesely make him a rogue of one of the many green lantern without pertubing the cosmic adventure of other green lantern... Furthermore the green lantern Alan scott seem a lot less cosmic than the heroes, wich make it easy to keep the fool to a rogue of that green lantern, the only problem with that is we don't see Alan scott very often this day but we maybe can see the new Alan Scott story in dc comics media, like maybe in a movie or a tv show, as many obscur dc character are made there way there recently.
Maybe he could be a literal living cartoon who somehow got into the real world and has cartoon physics powers? But since he is not in a cartoon anymore what he views as "silly pranks" are actually really deadly to ordinary non-cartoon people.

Happy birthday to Sweden’s number one rogue! I didn’t know this guy was, and now I do. What a thrilling emotional roller coaster this discovery was. I personally think Alan Scott has a pretty good rogues gallery. The Icicle, Sportsmaster, Solomon Grundy, Vandal Savage, The Gambler, Blackbriar Thorn, Harlequin (she predates Harleen Quinzel, she’s not the ripoff here), and Rose & Thorn (yeah, I say she makes a better Green Lantern villain than a Flash villain since Rose married Alan and is the mother of their children Jade and Obsidian, and Thorn is a threat to them). While I think this character has potential, I can’t really say I think we need this guy. Alan Scott already has Harlequin. I think she’s a much more interesting character. Molly Mayne was a woman who had a crush on Alan Scott, and created the Harlequin villain persona to get his attention, but it obviously didn’t work out quite as she planned. She committed mostly harmless joke crimes, and actually helped out Alan on occasion. When she realized that Alan didn’t love her back, she made a deal with the government to go on covert missions in exchange for a pardon for her past crimes. Eventually, she retired, and years after Alan’s first wife Rose died, Molly and Alan started a relationship and eventually married. Yeah, Alan’s already got a good clown villain. Although I think the Fool could be revamped to be Harlequin’s sidekick or admirer or something. Since he first appeared a month after Harlequin first appeared, you could play up their similarities. Harlequin’s crimes could seem larger and more grand-scale, but they’d be less dangerous, and Fool’s crimes would be seemingly pointless and low-scale, but be more financially motivated and devious. He could do it all to win over his perception of Molly as a master criminal who wants to pull off the crimes of the century, and he hates Green Lantern for supposedly “stealing his woman”, while Molly hates Fool for turning her harmless fun capers and attempts to win over Scott into petty thefts. You could tell a couple of interesting stories with this version of the Fool, I think. You could even tell a few stories set in the modern day where, as an aged supervillain, he tries to get revenge on Alan and Molly, if they’re even still married, since I don’t think Molly exists post-Flashpoint and Alan is gay now, so that story might be harder to tell now, but you could still do a version of it somehow. And, of course, he’d still be doing all this in a lighthearted manner. Despite more characterization and the darker motivations, he’d still have a goofy and foolish personality, as that’s something I like about this character. A modern-day version of the Fool might be possible. All I can think about is someone who would be like a villainous version of someone from the show "Jackass".
Personally speaking, a villain whose gimmick is pretending to not know any better would be an insult to actual people who don't know any better. At least nowadays.
I take it as a personal failing I didn't already know about this guy before now. I pride myself on being the world's biggest golden age superhero-stan. I've read every JSA book multiple times, All Star Squadron is my favorite comic and somehow I either didn't know or just forgot all about a villain in the rouge's gallery of the man himself, big G Alan Scott? You said something very important toward the end. DC needs to stop constantly using the same characters! They have a huge library of neat characters they ignore because they want the guaranteed draw. But the more obscure characters can get a lot of interest because they haven't been done to death. You can do new things with them which established characters will get criticized for as straying, for example.

Something you could do with him is maybe Alan catches onto the fact that he's smarter than he appears, and tries to convince other people, but the Fool just does joke crimes that aren't anything wrong, except they make Green Lantern look silly and stupid. Basically Fool is trying to lower his morale and make him seem like he's losing his mind.

I like this character, his zaniness reminds me alot of books like brand echh, the inferior five, and nextwave. In all fairness I think his only negative quality is his name. "Fool" is just too simple and it doesnt envoke anykind of presence. I would have gone for something a bit more refined and less on the nose, like "The Dunce". There's alot in a name. I dont think anyone would have liked the joker as much if his name had been "clown guy". If he ever made a return I think he'd be best suited as a plastic man rogue ( though that would be a pretty shortlived job given how rarely DC themselves make use of Plas' rogues as is)

Like Sportsmaster, I think the Fool could be reinvented for modern audiences, but he would have to switch heroes. Does Green Arrow have a Joker-esque villain? If he doesn't, why not give him the Fool?
If I were to reimagine this character, The Fool could be kind of a Logan Paul-esqe youtuber who tries to prank and pick fights with A-list superheroes but hardly gets noticed by anyone.

there are so many characters like this in the golden age and if i was a company i would incentivise creators by higher pay if they could come up with great stories for them because coming up with stories of many of them that would actually fly in an era of comics were stories have to make sense, be practical, and entertaining is not easy to do. My hope would be if they do they don't use one of the A Listers as having another character that doesn't get much love would be real cool - but thats me.

I really think this Fool character is a good character, even though of his foolish characteristics of being a literal fool himself, he still is a good villain for Alan Scott ( Green Lanter ) rogues gallery. Like there some of villains of golden age heroes of justice society that have rogues galleries, like Jay Garrick has rogues in his gallery from the golden age of comics, such as Shade, Rag Doll, and Fiddler. I still think the Fool is a good character, and should be remembered and brought back, because come on, we need forgotten rogues in medias, to become underrated rogues. Who knows what will come in the future if the Fool returns, maybe in a Green Lantern show on HBO Max they should introduce Alan Scott and the Fool. That would be a good one. But again, I still think the Fool is a good villain, in my opinion he's hilarious, and good to make a laugh of. Thank you for reviewing this rogue who is now forgotten, and Happy Birthday.

there are so many characters like this in the golden age and if i was a company i would incentivise creators by higher pay if they could come up with great stories for them because coming up with stories of many of them that would actually fly in an era of comics were stories have to make sense, be practical, and entertaining is not easy to do. My hope would be if they do they don't use one of the A Listers as having another character that doesn't get much love would be real cool - but thats me.

If The Fool does come back but the real question remains How should he come back and what can a modern version be like?
I really think this Fool character is a good character, even though of his foolish characteristics of being a literal fool himself, he still is a good villain for Alan Scott ( Green Lanter ) rogues gallery. Like there some of villains of golden age heroes of justice society that have rogues galleries, like Jay Garrick has rogues in his gallery from the golden age of comics, such as Shade, Rag Doll, and Fiddler. I still think the Fool is a good character, and should be remembered and brought back, because come on, we need forgotten rogues in medias, to become underrated rogues. Who knows what will come in the future if the Fool returns, maybe in a Green Lantern show on HBO Max they should introduce Alan Scott and the Fool. That would be a good one. But again, I still think the Fool is a good villain, in my opinion he's hilarious, and good to make a laugh of. Thank you for reviewing this rogue who is now forgotten, and Happy Birthday.
