In Africa, bride price is simply a token paid by the grooms family to the brides family in appreciation to them for bringing up the girl till the point of marriage. After bride price has been paid by the groom, it signifies that traditionally the lady has become a wife to the man. The bride price is just one of many other traditional rites to be carried out as demanded by the culture and tradition of the people.
However, it doesn’t mean or make the bride the man’s property in literal sense. It’s an expression to mean that she is traditionally accepted into the grooms family and has automatically become one of them “their own” by the virtue of marriage based on traditional law and custom.
These conversations should have been had way before the day of the traditional wedding and clearly explained to Emily’s parents to calm their fears and address their concerns. The spokesman for the family did a terrible job conveying the message. A more fluent person in English language or an interpreter should have been used in order to bridge the communication gap. Her parents should have done their research before coming to Cameroon. Moreover, Emily and Kobe have been legally married for a couple of years with 2 kids, and that in itself is valid enough anywhere in the world. The traditional marriage is just for Emily and her family to also experience Kobe’s roots and culture, and learn what it means to be an African from Cameroon, just the same way Kobe has learnt and adapted to the American culture.

Kobe's been dancing to Emily's beat since moving in America. Embracing Kobe's culture (as crazy as it may seem to some, is the least he can do. Poor wording, but traditionally, a bride would move in with the man's family and continue lineage. If she died, she would be buried in the man's village as this is where her new family would be (husband and children).
Technically, she would be an asset to the man's family as opposed to her own (as she would have left home). The man's family would benefit from her day to day contributions such as cooking/cleaning etc.
This is similar to a father giving her daughter away. She would then belong to the husband and family. She would take on his last name and all her offspring then carry the husband's last name.

Things are getting lost in translation here and it’s quite frustrating.
Dude has a limited idea (if any) of what the word property encompasses.Even the term “bride price” is a clumsy translation, it’s dowry. It is symbolic of the man and his family ability to provide for the bride once she will join his household. And it’s also a sign of appreciation to her family for raising her to be a woman worthy to be part of their family unit / continue the lineage.

In my culture (Arab), when a husband pays the bride a dowry (on top of jewelry and other things), it is so that she can use it to buy nice things for herself a new bride. Things like dresses, a car, maybe give her family some, or spend it all on herself. It is not as a payment for the bride to be a ‘property’.

I am an African, our traditions are almost the same . We pay pride price in a form of respect to the woman's family to say like thanks for nurturing your daughter and making her a beautiful woman ( not property, its crazy to say that. These people always misinform ). Divorce has always been in African traditions before the bible and a woman has the right to divorce her husband. She just needs to return whatever her husband paid to her family ( drink or animal ) . Money paid to her family is not returned in most African traditions. Its mostly the drink or animal presented to the family. It's sickening when they misinform, she is never the property of her husband 😞

I have ben married to an Igbo man for 8 years. We skipped all this stuff. His parents died a long time ago and my husband doesn't worry bout traditional stuff he says those days are over. Tho he has said before that I'm his property😂 it didn't faze me any cos it doesn't affect our lives.
Its just traditional stuff it doesn't really affect Emily and Kobe cos they're already married with kids n are living in the US. So her mum dragging her feet is pointless. These ppl mean no offence. If anything it's honourable they're accepting Emily as their ppl.

  • @pristymo

Just a wrong choice of words. It’s a form of appreciation to the parents. When I got married my “bride price” was only $168 because my mum didn’t want to make it seem like she’s “selling” her daughter

In African culture, if bride price or dowry is not paid it more like the bride doesn't have worth. The bride would be more like a woman who is just picked up from the side of the road. Kobe's family spokeman could have put it like its a way of appreciating her worth.

  • @sweetexbeauty

Kobe's been dancing to Emily's beat since moving in America. Embracing Kobe's culture (as crazy as it may seem to some), is the least she can do.
She would take on his last name and all her offspring then carry the husband's last name.😊

Its fine for Emily's dad to give her away to Kobe in an American wedding, yet taking a monetary donation towards her is the limit...If I was Emily I would be so upset over how her mom is acting in front of Kobes family....Cmon you are in Africa and African weddings are a Very traditional thing!!
