This is great. They're such an important part of this planet. I'm a chicken shit with bees but it's really neat watching people be able to raise them. Thank you for helping this planet survive another year.
This is very informative and I'm going to try that screen as entrance reducers to give more ventilation here in SC summer, great idea, and good description of the bee hierarchy.
Great advice. Although I use wooden reducers I keep other rectangular wooden blocks with prop on the bottom so I can further reduce the entrance if needed when another colonies tries the five finger discount. Thanks for the video.
This is great. I didn't know better, and this summer had a two-deep hive get completely robbed out in a week. Talk about a painful lesson. I shut down the entrance and the hive rebounded, so I got lucky, but ... opening that hive and seeing EVERYTHING gone and 30 frames full of dispirited bees was not a happy day. Anyway, thank you for this very timely video that expands on some of the crazy stuff I saw this year! P.S. Awesome entrance reducers.
I would think the top hive feeder you use would help the hive defend better being that the robbers are confused on how to get in. I know they would eventually figure it out but the activity around the entrance is rather calm compared to the feeder screen.
good tips ,bee keeping 3 days now and spotted same behavior on my hives (2) handled problem same way . moved the weaker hive and reduced entrance on both.wasnt my bees from either hive that were robbing was a feral hive(democrat)bees, they just wanted what mine had worked for .funny thing is before i got my bees i had only seen maybe 7 honey bees in 3 years where i live now they coming from everywhere .had casualties on both hives but wasnt major .
god love you for doing all this for just bee livelihood. ive just started looking into beekeeping and I done care about honey harvesting. Good for those who do, but id wanna just help facilitate the bee population and I love hearing that im not the only one. Cheers from southern Ohio. Thank you for doing what you do. I plan on following the same path. This is an inspiration.
Daily videos!! Love it. I am making up those screens now and I'm wondering if they will prevent mice and other pests from bothering my hives this winter. Seems like a mouse could push through but wouldn't want to. Either way, it would show a problem if you see the screen pushed in. Any past experience with this?
I've always been interested to know the "WHY" they chose a specific hive. I know sometimes you'll have other hives next to each other and they are all full of resources but they specifically target "ONE" out of the dozens that are in there! I guess the scout's Antenna tells them that the defense line isn't as strong as it should be and that you have a chance here? Also, I would love to know from your experience on the months where robbing occurs, regardless of dearth. Thanks for always posting awesome videos! Someday we are going to drive up there from PA and meet you!! ~John
Hey, did anybody ever tried to steal ( god forbid ) your hives or the honey? I just wonder if that's a thing a bee keeper have to worry about, or if it's so rare it's not worth the worries.
@@miso-ge1gz as far as i know it's actually not unusual for people to steal beehives that are brought out for pollination at almond orchards or something like that
I remember watching a group of red wasps go for a beehive, they hit the entrance and the alarm was sounded. one wasp would grab a bee or 3 or 4, and basically bite their heads off, by that time, 4 or 5 honeybees were on the wasp, and it was over. loved watching the action, as all the wasps suffered the same fate
How do they not swarm.? My 10 frame brood box wasnt enough size for my bees going through spring in the north east. They swarmed on memorial day. I was going to add another box on June 1st but I was too late. I did catch my own swarm and set them up in another box.
Hello David i am first year keeper i check my hive one a week. I found a few bees in my hive that are dead or dying and they dont look like mine. And the other bees are not messing with them. I have a working queen and strong hive . found a few dead with there heads in nectar. They are much darker than mine and skinnier. If you have an idea please i would appreciate it. Thanks David McGee, Memphis, Tn
Why are most bee yards covered in useless grass. Wouldn't you get more benefit from wild flowers, flowering shrubs and trees? Need more goldenrod why not plant some?
I have a neighbor that hasn’t taken care of her hives in over three years. Yesterday I noticed a LOT of darker colored bees eating everything at the entrance of my hive! And they’re very aggressive where my bees weren’t aggressive. I’ve never been able to find the Queen. Now I think they’ve been robbed by my neighbor’s bees! What do I do?
New here don't know if you have or not but Can you do a package from start to Finnish series? Not a nuc put of packaged bees with no fraim nuc box drawn.
I see that the hives are reversed every other hive faces a different direction. If you can explain this that would be great. Also, the hive boxes seem to be different colors. is this necessary for the bees to identify their hive in a long line of hives?
I'm breaking out the bee vac . Mines shut up and still hundreds of robbers still trying. Hate to do it they belong to my neighbor but their just to persistent this time. ( I'll hang on to them for a couple of days then let them go. I'll even give them a frame of honey to munch on. Also reduce the entrance to extremely small.
How are these bees not stinging you? It mystifies me every time I see beekeepers going up to a hive with no protection whatsoever. I'm like, how are you not getting stung like a hundred times a minute?
I bought some bees from BB and they are pretty chill. I rarely use a bee suit or head net unless im getting into the frames. Ive been stung 4 times this year. Nothing to it.
What month of the year robbing starts? I’m new to beekeeping and I can’t figure it out because your video says it was posted 3 years ago. At this point this could be March or October.
so it looks like you don't subscribe to the 200 meter distance of any open feeding. Ever since i put open feeding at 200 meters I have seen robbing greatly reduced.
after watching this video i realize that one of my hives is empty because it was robbed by other bees they were coming in and out of back and anywhere they could get in. so now i think that hive is empty does that happen .
seems to be what he is saying. i was thinking if it was just one of his other hives robbing a hive whats the big deal? but then he said how they will kill the queen bee and the hive will be destroyed. makes sense to help protect the hive.
Hey David love your videos as always. You said it's going up to around 80*f lol. How we would love that heat here in the uk. It's going to be 61*f today Sunday October 8th. 2017. 80*f is a fairly hot summers day for us. Ya know you dropped the frame a few days ago, well I had the kinda same problem. I was inspecting and an empty brood with frames in acting as a stand behind me. Pulling frames out of the hive and swapping empties for full frames to get the comb drawn in an upper brood. Just so the queen could lay up there. We use mainly poly hives here as a matter of course 6 and 10 frames. Yup so back to the hive and frame issue,I was going back to the hive to pull a frame, a bee either went to go foraging or took a dislike to me. She flew up my hoody sleeve,it kinda shocked me I moved back and knocked the brood box with a frame of bees in. They went everywhere flying around, sadly a few didn't make its around 40-50. So that's the upshot of the message always have plenty of room to move around.
I'd guess it's his own bees robbing each other. Early in the video he talks about bees from one hive not remembering their own hive entrance when they go to rob each other, so likely the robber bees are from this yard, not from some wild hive.
"You can tell. You will know." Isn't very informative. I know you are farming brood/queens but seeing all of those tiny hives makes me think, "well of course they are being robed. They don't have the space to grow into a strong colony. It reminds me of Chinese bound-feet. You /can/ keep your bees in a nuc, but you might be creating work for yourself."
I have no respect for a honeybee that, rather than put forth the hard work necessary to earn a living the right way, would instead resort to a life of crime. What self respecting bee does that? Just goes to show you that raising a bee the right way starts in the hive with a responsible queen and drone who lovingly set limits early on. Smh.
Not really into bees, but you make it fun to watch, learning new things, thank you sir
I had no idea the bees organized raiding parties. I now have much more respect for them
Pirate bees.
This is great. They're such an important part of this planet. I'm a chicken shit with bees but it's really neat watching people be able to raise them. Thank you for helping this planet survive another year.
Thank you for posting this! One of our hives was under siege we were able to fix the problem after watching your video.
This is very informative and I'm going to try that screen as entrance reducers to give more ventilation here in SC summer, great idea, and good description of the bee hierarchy.
I really enjoy all your videos. I don’t keep bees but I am fascinated by them. Lease keep it up.
Your videos are so informative! I am going to make up some entrance reducers like that in the spring. Thanks for the idea.
These videos are so interesting, and I love how you say barnyard bees your accent is wonderful
That entrance reducer is a great idea!
Love your entrance reducer. The biggest thing I worry about is blocking the ventilation while protecting my bees. That's an awesome idea.
I'm not a beekeeper but i Can't stop watch your vids
Great advice. Although I use wooden reducers I keep other rectangular wooden blocks with prop on the bottom so I can further reduce the entrance if needed when another colonies tries the five finger discount. Thanks for the video.
I just can believe how fantastically amazing bees are. I’m fascinated! I love your Chanel.

You can stop the robbyng by spraying diesel on the flight scout, It works

Every fall in north Maine is a robbing fall.... always loose at least one colony before I catch it... great video dude.
Great information! We use your entrance reducers. Thanks!

Thank you for the information.
One question.
Can you propagate golden rod & other pollinators around a bee yard?
Great video Barny like you i can spot robbing a mile away can even tell just by watching the entrance what is pretty much going on inside the hive.
all the bees recognize this dude and know not to sting him as he isn't a threat. that amazes me
the bees don't really care because he isn't trapping any of them. but he still gets stung a lot
Daily videos!! Love it. I am making up those screens now and I'm wondering if they will prevent mice and other pests from bothering my hives this winter. Seems like a mouse could push through but wouldn't want to. Either way, it would show a problem if you see the screen pushed in. Any past experience with this?
Why do you use particle board for your hives? Is it warmer in the winter? Does it ventilate better?
This video is amazing! I am edit honey related issues video in Taiwan. Can I use this video for teaching purposes?
Could I use this video for teaching purposes? I'll give you credit. Thanks a lot!
Are they stressed by always defending the sugar water supply? It is definitely not natural...
Thanks for the informational vids!

I tried the a DIY of a commercial robbing screen and wasn't very impressed. I'll try this version next. Much simpler! I like simple.
I love your videos!! Hi from Oregon!
Would there be less robbing if the hives were spaced farther apart?
Probably not... maybe only a little tiny bit less.
Thank you!!! you just saved the day for me!!!
You use 5 five nucs as hives to collect honey or do you use them for queen making?
What about hives that are out in the fields and only being checked every now and then,,, how do you protect from bing robbed
do they unintentionally bump against each other midair sometimes? Like a midair accident?
Yes, and it’s cute
Hey David first winter with nuc do u add a super with honey for winter or just a feeder and the brood box
You cell bees and queen? If so what kind are they?
Would it hurt to completely close the hive for a day
How do they not swarm.? My 10 frame brood box wasnt enough size for my bees going through spring in the north east. They swarmed on memorial day. I was going to add another box on June 1st but I was too late. I did catch my own swarm and set them up in another box.
I already order a feeder, what size do you suggest to make those ventilation holes around that feeder

Got plans for the hive top feeder box?
Why are most bee yards covered in useless grass. Wouldn't you get more benefit from wild flowers, flowering shrubs and trees? Need more goldenrod why not plant some?
You'd be surprised that bees will fly past great forage nearby to fly off quite a distance instead probably for something even better.
My comment also, grass is a big negative. Simply worthless to our ecosystem and humans.
Can you do a video on making pollen patties?
Why the hives are small? How many frames are there?
How to you get your 5 frame nucs through the winter?
Is there a chance that the robbers know where the entrance of the hive is but are trying to find entrances that aren't guarded? 👀
Love your videos.
I've got bees coming into an empty box. Are they moving in or robbing it? How can I tell?

Our hive has two deep boxes, which are both full of honey and brood on the lower box. Should we add a super even though it's October?
Barnyard Bees ok. thank you so much!
Where do you get your 1/8 in hardware cloth? It's not easy to find.

I never thought bees have little bee fights
organizing raiding parties; plundering each other
How do you know if you got nice honey bees in your yard and not the African bees?
All the bees have been Africanized by now.
Do you only use nuc boxes?
Thanks for the videos

do the robbers come from your other hives?
No, they are usually wild

so how many gallons does your outfit produce each year and are you able to sell the honey?

No problem:) stay safe:]
Where do you buy that screen mesh you use?

I would say robbing would be around July to August.

What is the frequency of mid-air collisions?
I don’t think it’s often, but I don’t know much about bees. I just know it happens
I think you got way more bees than you got flowers, dude.
Get rid of those worthless lawns and seed with a bee mix or nitrogen fixing cover crops with pollen blooms.
Does robbing mean bees come from a hive to steal honey from another hive?
(I plan on setting up a first hive next year)

they like real robbers. They rather not use the front door. They try back windows and craxks and stuff. Front door is usually the last option. Lol
These look like nucs -do you have a video for plans for your top feeders? Awesome job on videos! Thank you!

I think this is the most efficient way. Sure it's not a perfect answer but for how many hives he has it's the price you pay
feeding the bees? how do you feed a bee? aren't the bees supposed to suck nectars?
he said its sugar water. so many bees in a tight spot, guess you got to help them out and feed them - not enough plants in the area
