Some people just have genetic talent. For everyone: please don't expect to achieve these times easily, even if you invest the 15+ h of training. The training response of this guy is abnormally high.
@@twrkhanasparukh haha that was ment to be 5-9 hours a ‘week’ in the first year. Later on after 16 months about 20-22 hours a week. Which is about 3.5 hours a day on average. 5-9 on average would be nuts 😂
Or some just work really hard. Unknowingly I'm doing something similar, from couch to 70.3 in 5 months. Started with 5 - 9 hours a week too and now doing 20 avg. The hard work isn't killing yourself every workout. Is reading and reading and learning about the science and applying it to the best to your ability. Is saying no to social gatherings bc you have to commit to your recovering and wake up early for a training session. Not sure if we both have "genetic talent" or not, but but tons of focused and quality hard work most people can complete their 1st 70.3
Loved hearing about your journey and experience. Seeing that joy as you crossed the finish line in first place is inspiring. All the best to you this season!
Insane story. Honestly I did not think you could make such great process but it motivated me to increase my volume. I would also be interested in you nutrition since you had great training great recovery and nutrition influences both
Really enjoying these videos. Having listened to the TM podcast from the beginning, it's actually really interesting to now hear your story in more detail..here's to a killer 2024 Tom!
Great story Tom. I didn't know you had collapsed in your first Kona. I can relate to your story. I bought my first bike in 2016, first half in 2017 and first full in 2018. Had great results but nothing compared to yours. I was so naive but motivated... And mentally stronger than now! Nowadays I give much more respect (and scare) to the distance
Incredible Journey and what a mindset. What you do, what you achieve is an inspiration and will motivate many more, I know because you motivate me to try even harder and improve myself. Great Job man.
I studied in NL, now back in Thailand. Also training for triathlon to race in my country. Your story is inspiring and your accent makes me miss life in NL so muchhhhh
What an inspiring journey! Your improvement - especially on the bike - is insane! Can you explain how you've improved your bike performance? That would be so interesting! Thanks a lot :)
Woooow👏👏👏🔥🔥🔥 what a great history 😊you made my day, incredible your evolution in a short time, I think you are a really great talent for Ironman 🤩 I am 68 years old and a great fan of Ironman especially Jan Frodeno, I had the luck to be a few meters away from him when he started Ironman World Championship in Nizza, I made some shorts on my TH-cam channel to remember 😊, I only run Halfmarathon after a break of 35 years 😮 last ones in London and Miami and it was a great pleasure 🤩 wish you all the best 😀
I can't understand how it's possible to go from zero in 4.5 months to participate in a 70.3. If you haven't done any sport before you likely get massive injuries when training full gas right from the start. In such a short time span you couldn't build it up easily, how was this possible? :)
I’ve enjoyed listening and laughing along to your chats with Joe Skipper (particularly the one about sauna battles 😂) and I just found your TH-cam channel. I didn’t know your background story! Great to hear it. Look forward to following your progress! 🟢 New subscriber ✅
After watching his 70.3 debut, I was like "ok, my debut time was not far off from his". Then I saw his first IM time, then the second, and I was like... "oh ok nvm". Insane talent (but a lot of hard work too obviously).
Great progression Tom. I have an enjoyed following you returning to good fitness over the last year or so. Will the file include workouts and specifically the amount of time spent at low HR etc?
Thanks Matthew, appreciate it. Im currently coming back to good fitness and cant wait to be at my peak again. The file is pretty generic, its a file I have used for my first Half. Its a 15 week starters program.
This is inspiring. When you started ramping up your training to ~19 hr/wk, what did you bike workouts look like? Coming from a run and swim background, I never know how to train efficiently on the bike
Hey Tom, super inspiring. When you mentioned you trained for that period of time solely off HR data did you have a go-to HR strap/watch setup that you used? Interested in putting in money for a good HR tracking setup :)
For example the easy run at that time I was running around 05;40 per kilometer. And the hard intervals (so not warm up and cool down but intervals) For example 6x1000m at 3;30/3;40 per kilometer. The window between running HARD And SLOW Is big. Like 2minutes per kilometer.
Hey Tom, cool story - I especially liked the going all-out for the last 2km in kona part, I like that mentality. I have two questions regarding your journey: - Do you have a background in sports? - Were you ever injured in these 36 months? Cheers
I did athletics till I was 14. Then I stopped doing sports for 10 years. With regards to the injuries; I have had a running knee at the very beginnen. Apart from that no injuries during these 36 months.

Hey Tom, super inspiring. When you mentioned you trained for that period of time solely off HR data did you have a go-to HR strap/watch setup that you used? Interested in putting in money for a good HR tracking setup :)
Yes I did, but it wasnt anything super high tech. At the time I used a garmin forerunner 735XT. A newer version of that will do with a garmin HR belt.
Big respect! Can you elaborate in detail what a really easy training and really hard training is? 2:08
