7 Minutes of Terror: How Perseverance Will Land on Mars

  • The stakes are high for NASA's newest rover. Years of hard work and millions of dollars could be burnt into the Martian soil if one mistake has been made!
The Perseverance Rover represents the latest in a long line of remote robotic exploration vehicles sent to the red planet over the last 44 years.
It seeks to answer further questions raised by it’s predecessor Curiosity - which made its landing on Mars in 2012 and was the most ambitious mission flown by NASA at that time.
This ‘little engine that could’ has now been on Mars for almost 8 Earth years - 2835 Mars days to be exact. It has fulfilled it’s primary mission of finding evidence of organic molecules and geological change on Mars.
It continues to explore and search for water in the form of ice.
All this was possible due to Curiosity's successful landing. But how likely is Perseverance to have a successful touchdown?

I'm 18, living in India, literally knows no one who loves astrophysics and space stuffs but still I'm so much emotionally connected to all the tries that NASA and space agencies across the globe are making including my country's own space agency 'ISRO'. Its such an experience to be on social media reading listening to so many others curious people living different lives but sharing same interest. Best of luck to all.... And to PERSEVERANCE ..

I'm the same way. I live in Aurora way down in south eastern Indiana and not a single friend of mine, nor family member, shares the passion i have for space exploration and rocketry. I think it's something you're born with. Smart folks tend to like challenging subjects or hobbies instead of those that require zero thought lol. In my humble scientific opinion that is. 😁

I have the same interest I don't remember since when? But i have been following Mars Mission since Rover Spirit and Opportunity launched back in 2003 Where spirit had quite reasonable launch sequence while opportunity had some issues here and there but eventually made it. But actually it was Opportunity which served more than a decade while spirit ceased within first few years. I have been following curiosity as well and all msg logs of the three rovers sent earlier. Looking forward to see what Perseverance explore. Good NASA.

Russia was also scheduled for the same July window but decided further tests are necessary on their shoots. But still there are three spacecraft on their way to the red planet. With the Mars rover 2020 , Perseverance, we will get to know so much more about Mars and what Perseverance will find there. Looking forward to Feb. 18, 2021 when then Perseverance will land on the Jerezo crater. Crosssing my fingers that these ''7 minutes of terror'' Percy will handle it to a successful and smooth landing. Thumbs up .

@@TheBest14184 Uhh.... why would there even be wind on Mars... their atmosphere is 1% of what we have.

    • @DavidJsmith-dk5tf
      @DavidJsmith-dk5tf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, the Perseverance Rover is equipped with 2 microphones.
The lower one is expected to pick up the rovers transmission noise, and hopefully be able to indicate if there is a problem (damaged wheel etc) from it.
The top microphone may pick up some transmission too .
Whilst wind speeds can be quite high, it is also very weak, (100 times weaker than on earth) I expect it would pick up dust landing on the rover, during a storm and hopefully more. Perhaps it could detect the noise from a nearby meteorite landing.
Also, dust devils close to the Rover, may be audible - like a mini tornado on earth, and they are quite frequent on Mars.
Exciting times ahead for Mars enthusiasts !

Awesome animation for the perseverance lander. This will be a mission of survival. Sooo much training will be needed to handle so many potential problems that may occur once landed. Hats off to the thinkers of this extraordinary mission. Don’t rush the mission. I personally think we will not be ready before 2040 because I truly think a lot of questions are still unanswered.
