The fact that the parents ran, trying to flee prosecution, leaving their teenaged son to face this alone tells you all you need to know about what type of people they are. And I’m not saying the shooter deserves any type of support, empathy or understanding whatsoever, but at the end of the day he’s still their son.

I do have empathy for the son because he is a child who had clear cries for help and warning signs and his parents did not get him help, he was obviously severely mentally troubled at this point I can’t imagine how they could’ve been so Blind us to think that he was not on a course to something terrible.Of course I have more empathy for the victims of his rampage.

For the price of that Sig Sauer semi (plus ammo), these parents could have easily purchased Ethan a nice used Squire bass guitar, performance amp and encouraged him to take music/bass lessons.
Ethan could have gone on to join or form a cool rock band. His social problems could have been dealt with in a peaceful, positive way.
This is one out of many, many possible alternatives to buying a troubled teen a Sig Sauer semi-auto hand gun.

I don't understand how parents can resist taking their child home at the schools discretion? It's not a choice, you have to take your child home. I work for a school district, that's not how it works. Why didn't the school search his locker and backpack after finding the alarming evidence they did? It doesn't make sense to me. Without doing a search they send him back to class? The school also should have called an ambulance and had the child taken to the hospital for a psychiatric exam immediately. The child should have not been able to return to school until he was cleared by doctors and receiving therapy and put on medication. Apples don't fall far from trees, the parents are unstable and needed help too. They were enablers, blind and helpless to their sons unstable behavior. Instead they bought him a gun and ammo and everyone paid the price. They even fled and left him to face this alone. All 3 have untreated mental disabilities. This whole situation is very sick and could have been prevented. The school could have prevented this by doing a thorough investigation after catching him searching for ammo in class, finding the disturbing drawing, after seeing the social media post of the gun by him and his mother which they would have found during a proper investigation, along with the loaded gun in his backpack with the extra clips. The school failed everyone. Schools have the right to send any student home, search any locker or backpack and search any student period for any suspicious behavior or contraband. Plus they have their own school liaison officer at their fingertips. The school should be prosecuted too.

Because the school told the parents the kid had to start therapy within 48hours in order to stay in school.

Still very early in the investigation-this isn’t like TV policing (except live PD and COPS) as in realty it takes lots of interviews, analysis and evaluation to build a effective prosecutable case. As a retired LEO, most of the gen pop has very little concept of how much work goes into even the simplest of cases, let alone one like this. And, after tons of reports, interviews, and investigation, the prosecution could still LOSE. Sure his attorney will go for insanity or similar… not that it really matters given Michigan has no Death Penalty.

I'm also tired of males like this portraying themselves as "heroes" when we're paying them protection money to protect us from other MEN. And I'm tired of Sheriff Bouchard "fighting back" tears. Try being a nurse like I am and taking care of these patients in the hospitals (where they CONTINUE to be critical and "code"), while dealing with the parents and their grief. WE are the ones who continue to do clean up; changing the diapers and colostomies of kids that have been shot. Dealing with a young man who will be paralyzed from the waist down from his injuries, while trying to teach him to take care of himself when he's still in denial about never being able to walk again. The dressing changes, the drainage tubes and wires and machines, the family's questions, etc.
And I can manage not to cry in front of other people. These men are the biggest babies; they create the problem, the drama, and the danger they put us ALL in, ......then they cry when they have to respond to it.

What if this was your child that was killed, wouldn't you want to know why? These families may never get those answers, but if there is a chance then they deserve that chance.
A trial is the only way they are going to know the full story of what led up to the shooting. The only chance the parents or the child that did this will have to answer to the families.
Knowing the people who killed or injured your loved one is behind bars and will have to stand trial and be punished to the full extent of the law.
All the kids that had to see this horrible senseless act that are traumatized probably sleep better knowing he's behind bars.
It's not even close to making up for killing their loved one, but it's more than what they have now. Nothing will ever make what happened okay or even make it make sense, but if the parents and kid are dead there is no answers or any kind of justice.

You must be very naive...the school district has no money. What, you think this school district walks down to the basement, to their printing press, and orders up a couple mil to pay lawsuits? That is YOUR money, given to the district through a voter levy. That school system is going to be bankrupted by the lawsuits, and so they are going to go back to the taxpayers and ask for a few more million to continue operation. Put down that game controller and study how our system operates! Or DOESN'T operate, as the case may be.

The parents are not asked whether or not they want/agree to their child being expelled.
