That could make up for the lack of a clone wheel - the only negative of this instrument for me at the moment - many thanks for the idea - Kawai should make more of this feature themselves!

Nice video Chuck! Thanks for posting! I don't think my MP10 has that feature. Maybe it does and I just never understood it well enough to use it!

Robert, the MP10 does indeed have this feature, although its MIDI section is limited to just one external MIDI channel, whereas the MP11 can control up to four MIDI channels.

Hello Chuck. I 've got a Kawai MP11-SE. What I like in your video is the simplicity of your proposal and the reduction of devices and complexity. So I 've a question: Is there a mixer (amplifier) necessary? I mean, your audio-cables come directly from the Alesis-NanoSynth-Box and are leading in the Audio-In of the Kawai Stage Piano to regulate it with the Line-In-Volume of that. But are the signals strong enough and the output of the volume good enough like the other 3 internal segments (Piano/e-Piano/Sub) of the Kawai itself or is it lower? So: do I have to connect a mixer between the NanoSynth-Box and the Kawai to get a satisfied volume out of external Box? - The thing is: I'm also looking for a simple solution and I want to do the same as you did with an other and newer expander, the V3 Sound Expander GRAND PIANO XXL.

Do you know of another HW that is more recent and does the same function as the Alesis nanosynth?.

OH, did I miss the part where you identify the black box?

So is the quality as good as just running a 2nd channel to personal mixer/FOH? If the quality is just as good on the In’s then can eliminate a personal mixer and even larger midi controlled keyboard/synths to lug around and use smaller boxes like the Virus Snow etc (which I already control but use on it’s own channel via the personal mixer to FOH....A lot of inputs on keyboards are not that good for levels and good quality sound. (I use the MP7 btw and it is a great board)

Can you still affect the sounds coming from the box using parameters within the MP11? Can you change brilliance, Dynamics etc?

That's a really cool idea Chuck. No need for a computer, simply a midi box, ipad or iphone. BTW, what app (s) do you suggest for the ipad/iphone?

Sam Webber Thanks, Sam. Actually, I don't use a phone or tablet with any of my music... so I can't make any recommendations there.

Thank you for this and other videos you've made about the MP11. One small correction: according to the manual, you don't need a MIDI interface to connect to a computer. You just use the USB port! "USB TO HOST port: This port is used to connect the MP11 to a computer using a USB cable. When connected, the instrument can be used as a standard MIDI device, allowing it to send a receive MIDI data. Connect a ‘B’ type USB connector to the instrument, and an ‘A’ type USB connector to the computer." What the manual doesn't say, and I'd be very curious to try, is whether a simple lightning-to-USB cable (with a type A to type B adapter) can be used to connect iOS devices, and also whether there is any degradation in sound quality when the 3.5mm jack on the iPhone/iPad is used to connect to the line-ins on the MP11.

Watch the video again and pay attention to what I said at around 2:00 - I do NOT want a computer or laptop or notebook to have to take along with me... I'm using a standalone, independent MIDI Device. All MIDI Devices that are not computers require the standard 5-pin DIN MIDI cables!
USB over MIDI works well if all you want to do is hook up the MP11 to a computer.

You did talk about iPad though, and again I'm wondering whether a simple USB-to-lightning connection is possible without the need for an interface. For example, with my current Roland keyboard which doesn't have a USB out, I use an iConnect MIDI Lightning edition ($80). It would be nice to not need to use that if the USB port on the Kawai can connect directly to an iPad using the iPad's standard charging cable. I know you would need an adapter because the charging cable uses USB type A and the Kawai's output is USB type B, but you can get a USB B to A female adapter for $2-$3, and it would be simpler than the iConnect interface.

Hi, thank you for this video, it was very useful to me. I am in the process of deciding between MP7 and MP11 at the moment. I would also like to add a hardware synth module to the setup specifically for classic pipe organ sounds. Can you tell me how many pipe organ sounds the Alessis Nanosynth has please? I can't see many of them for sale (I'm in the UK) - is there another hardware synth that features a variety of pipe organ sounds I should look at? I don't really want software synth. Also can you tell me how durable the MP7/MP11 keyboards are - I have read of some people having problems with noisy keys on them after a while? Loving your videos, keep up the good work!

Piano man, I wanted to know if it is possible to use that same little box to run virtual pianos like Ivory2 or pianoteq on kawai vpc 1 without a laptop. I'm tired of having to turn on a laptop just to play the piano.

impromptu Its a self-standing box with its own built-in sounds, it does not replace a computer.

I really can't understand why Kawai didnt allowed the same instrument set in MP7 to be used in MP11. They use the very same engine and MP11 cost 55% more!! I don't accept any style or keyboard action as justification. So amazing instrument... Why Kawai?

I would like to buy this fine instrument. I have little funds, but I was told interesting trades would be accepted. I offer you one fine Casio watch, a zip-lock bag full of partially claimed Coca Cola bottle caps, and some torn five dollar bills that may or may not have survived a horrendous fire. I know that you're already impressed with my offer, so perhaps we could meet somewhere? I clearly don't live in your State, but maybe you could drive out to Colorado. I'd happily reimburse you for 10% of your gas money and I could suggest reasonably priced hotels if you decide to stay in my once lovely town.
