I was out in the audience the year Heather won. When she performed her talent there was this electric energy in the auditorium. After she danced almost the entire audience was rooting for her to win!
@@Hexmari yes, she did. Lisa is saying that being Deaf was not her reason for winning though. Many people take credit away from her accomplishment by saying she only won because she was Deaf. Lisa is saying she didn’t win for being deaf, but because she was beautiful, talented, and inspiring.
This was a treasure to watch. I remember this pageant. I was able to meet Heather Whitestone the year she was crowned Miss America. I was 11 years old. I spoke with her and spent a while getting to know her and have pictures taken. I still have the book she signed for me all those years ago.
She would've won whether she was deaf or not. She's classically beautiful, elegant, poised, and charismatic. She reminds me of Princess Diana, but better-looking. Her face is stunning - she's far better looking than most contestants.
It is heartbreaking... She can't hear a note of the music... Or a single clap of applause. But she really still out there moving. It's really kind of awe-inspiring.
. . . Weren't you paying attention? 🙄 She has 5% hearing in one ear. She CAN hear music. She CAN hear applause. ---->>>> **NOTE: Those who are COMPLETELY deaf/hearing impaired can only speak and communicate through sign language. 🤟 How was Heather able to have back-and-forth dialogue/discourse with Regis (1:55 and 2:30) if she "couldn't hear?" 🦻 . . . Think before you post, idiot love. 💋
@@DrMorioleIt’s still very very impressive. 5% hearing in one year is next to nothing. I doubt she can hear unless someone is speaking very loudly right in her ear.
She reads lips very well but even at that only gets about 50% so she has to clarify. She can't really hear music unless it's blasted to her hearing aid assisted ear.
as it has been said here in the comments I have to agree I remember watching this pageant and thinking to myself whether she was deaf or not. Heather deserved the title she was a wonderful contestant.
I was in convention hall Heather won. I apologize to any other contestants on stage that night including my state rep but there was nobody else on that stage that night that was going to win. We talked with other states & MAO people, the only previous time that there was an obvious & foregone prediction for the crown was in 1986 when Vanessa Williams won. Heather was stunning, an amazing ballet artist & even with her disability, extremely bright, articulate & inspiring. She is an asset to all that the MAO program is!
Oh man, that look on her face when Heather realizes that _she_ is the new Miss America, is absolutely priceless(!), as was her beautiful tribute to Christ, the Lord. 😊 Maranatha! Anyone know if Heather ever got to meet Jennifer Wall, Miss Washington 1989? I think Jennifer was the first deaf contestant in the Miss America pageant. She placed in the top 10. :) (Or, heck, I wonder if Heather’s ever met Heather Jackelen, Miss Wyoming 2005? I don’t think Ms. Jackelen is deaf herself, but she did speak AND sign her intro at Miss America 2006! Hey, they are both Heathers.)
@@jos.2897 Exactly! The sign she is seen using is very common among the Deaf community and used to show unity and, well, community. Honestly, some people can be so ignorant.

I keep watching this because it touches me. Makes me cry for various reasons!

As the evening proceeded it became more and more evident Heather would be Miss America. She had everything.

Kudos to Heather! One of the most aspiring Miss America winners ever!❤
