      All it means is the generation differences.
      For example, my first cousin’s daughter and I do not share the same Great Grandparents because we are different generations. My Grandparents are her Great Grandparents, hence she is my first cousin once removed, but if I had children they would be second cousins since they would share Great Grandparents together without any generations gaps.

      Your parent is their parent = sibling
      Your Grandparent is their Grandparent = first cousin
      Your Great-Grandparent is their Great-Grandparent = second cousin
      Your Great-Great-Grandparent is their Great-Great Grandparent = third cousin
      Your parent is their Grandparent = niece/nephew
      Your Grandparent is their Great-Grandparent = first cousin once removed

      It was terribly explained lol. What they said was true/accurate but they phrased it more confusing than it should have been. They could have used examples or names instead of talking like that.
      Your mom has a sister (your aunt). Your aunt, has a son = your cousin. This part everyone knows. Now if you and your cousin both have children, these kids are 2nd cousins to each other.
      Now what's the relationship between your child and your cousin? First cousin once removed. The removed is just to specify the generational gap.
      If your child had a child, then its relationship to your cousin would be 1st cousin twice removed (twice because 2 generations gap)

    I grew up in a family that always knew these relationships. In fact, our closest relatives were my great aunt and her son Eric, who is my first cousin once removed, since he is first cousins with my mom. To me, it's easier to remember that children of first cousins are second cousins. Grandchildren of first cousins are third cousins. Great grandchildren of first cousins are fourth cousins. If you're one generation off, then it's once removed. If you're two generations off, then you're twice removed. I'm actually very close to my third cousins on my dad's side because his mother, my grandma, was really close to her cousin Ernest. He introduced me to his grandkids and we've been close ever since. My daughter even met her 4th cousin. But everyone else seems to be confused. In fact, they get annoyed if I try to explain. LOL

    Just think of it as a second cousin being the child of your parent's cousin.
    If your cousin had a child, it would be first cousin once removed. First cousin once removed can also refer to the cousin of your parents.
    Third cousin would be the Grandchild of your Grandparents cousin, and so on and so forth (With the fourth cousin being the Great Grandchild of your Great Grandparents cousin).
    My grandfather has a cousin and she would technically be my first cousin twice removed (It's like X and Y axis, she's my GPs cousin and my GP is two generations above me, so first cousin twice removed), but I just call her my aunt.

    Guys the removed part just means generations once means one generation higher or lower ect. The first cousin part for this is a bit more confusing but still simple a first cousin once removed means you are first cousins but your just a generation a part this means that A’s grandmother is person B’s great grandmother. We share the same grandparents just a generation off. Twice removed just means Persons
    A’s grandma is your great - great grandmother.

      Cousin is usually understood to be first cousin, but on its own, it is ambiguous. Your first cousins, second cousins, third cousins, fourth cousins, as well as the cousins that are removed are all your cousins. It is when you attach those extra degrees that you make it more specific. Almost all of the constitutional monarchs in Europe are cousins of each other through Queen Victoria of the UK and King Christian IX of Denmark. Elizabeth II of the UK and her husband Prince Philip are double cousins. They are third cousins through Victoria and second cousins once removed through Christian IX. Elizabeth II, Harald V of Norway, Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, Margrethe II of Denmark, Juan Carlos I of Spain are all cousins. Specifically, they are third cousins through Victoria of the UK. Margrethe II and Carl XVI Gustaf are also first cousins through Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden.

    Here's one for ya: My second cousin and I share the same great grandma but have different great grandpas. Would that (by scientific DNA standards) make us technically 4th cousins since we do not share the same great grandpa but have the same great grandma? Either way, we see ourselves as family no matter what. Sometimes it's just about who you were raised with that constitutes as a family, even if there is a lack of blood relation.

    • @johnbevan4684
      @johnbevan4684 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. There are as many viewpoints as pundits! lol The response I gave is one that just about everybody would agree with. However, I could also give you the answer that really fits your scenario which is that you would be half second cousins. The reason I say this is ... well let's take it analogically. Let's say that you and I are brothers. If we are full brothers, it means that we have both parents in common. Full blood brothers. Now let's pretend our mother had you, then her husband died or they divorced then she married again and they had me. We would now be half-brothers. Why? Because we have one common biological parent. Now if you extended that to second or third or fourth cousin, it would still hold. You would be half 4th cousins (or whatever degree you want) because of that one common blood ancestor.
      I can hear a host of genealogists yelling and screaming - because people just get bent out of shape about these things. I don't know if this helped, but I hope it did. Cheers.

    • @TheYarcob
      @TheYarcob 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this helps a lot. Thank you. I told my mother that I should be half second cousins, so it is nice to know that I was headed in the right direction! I love family history and have studied it the past 20 years; I have just never gotten this technical and was unsure what we would be in the eyes of science. It's pretty common to see scenarios like this the further back I go. My ancestry with my surname goes back to Norfolk, England. Iassume, from you profile pic, that you are Welsh.

    • @johnbevan4684
      @johnbevan4684 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad to have helped. Yes, so in the eyes of science you would be blood relatives. The best thing is to either print out one of the many graphs that you can find on the internet, or draw one yourself and plot out your relationship. It's actually quite fun. And you can get a lot of information from several good sites and learn about relationship terms such as, for example, an honourary uncle (the man who marries your blood aunt) and many more terms in that vein. And yes, I am Welsh and I've been in the States for quite a while. Cheers, Jørn!

      1st cousin four times removed. Your common ancestor is still your grandmother/father. The child has four more generations between them though.
      4th cousins would be if you and your first cousin both had great grandkids. Those kids would be 4th cousins.
      Basically, your 1st, 2nd, 3rd ect cousins will be around the same age as you. Also, your closest ancestor will be the same title to each perseon, ie grandmother. For 2nd cousins great grandmother, but it's always the same relation to both cousins.
      A 1st cousin once removed would be a generation either older or younger than you.Your closest ancestor will have a different relation to each of you. ie Your grandmother and their great grandmother.
      In the scenario you gave, it's your 1st cousin 4 times removed. The relation is your grandparents and their great great great great grandparents are the same people.

      It's simple. If your first, second, third, and etc. cousin have children, their children would be whatever number of cousin they are and just add the removed. For example, your first cousin had a child. That child would your first cousin once removed to you. Same for you. You are first cousin to your first cousin. If you have a child, your child would be first cousin once removed to your first cousin. I know what you're probably thinking is that the children of you and your first cousin are the second cousins and you're right. They are, but they would be second cousins to each other, but not to you and your first cousin. Do you understand it a little better, or are you still confused?

      If your aunt is related to you only because she married your biological uncle, then her sister, her sister's daughter, and any other relatives on her side is not related to you, but are related to your uncle but only through him marrying her. They are called his marital relatives. That means related through marriage, in other words, they are his in laws.
