- Extract from the TV show Mad Men Season 05 Episode 11: "The Other Woman".
Donald Draper gives one of his strongest sales pitch to land Jaguar by drawing a parallel between an E-Type and a beautiful woman.
Jaguar.
It's Toasted.
It’s toasted. I like it.
😂😂😂
Jaguared. Now with 4 wheels
Pass the Jaguar.
God damn Don you did it again!
The two happiest day’s of a Jaguar owners life, are the day they got the car and the day they got rid of it.
Lol
Why?
They say this about Porsches and boats also. Maintenance and maintaining performance standards can become expensive.
Coincidentally, this is what Don thought about getting and later losing the Jaguar account (even though the other partners didn't see it that way).
@@Sheenoli I carpooled with three other people between two cities for work for a few years. One of the group owned a Jag that was less than 10 years old. We never used her car for the full trip. She'd drive to my place and park it there because it was too unreliable for a 180km round trip. One morning she had to leave it with the window down because it wouldn't go back up. Another time it wouldn't restart when she got back to it. She said it had been trouble since new but she loved how good it made her feel when she got out of it and people would look at her and the car. My mechanic at the time had a lot of experience with European cars and I mentioned the Jag to him. He told me they're lovely cars to sit in while you wait for the breakdown service. Does that help?
The characters really hit the moral rock bottom in order to get this account
Happens all the time in Washington, D.C. Look at Ilhan Omar ditching her husband for a white dude.
joan being the first one
How? Joan is the only one. No
One else
@@Inbraneinthememsaneall of the partners approached Joan and suggested Herb’s request to her - all apart from Don who didn’t want to soil her like that. The rest were okay with it, and Joan clearly had mixed feelings. Joan went through with it because she has been taught to use her sexuality to get ahead, but also because the partners were counting on her to do it.
Morals in business - are you kidding?
“What price would we pay? What behavior would we forgive?”
"those are 2 different stories." Poor Joan. This was a heartbreaking, remarkable episode.
She did it. No one forced her into being a Pro.
Didn't she get part of the company?
@@FunkSoulBrother7 Yep after she told me "You cannot afford me," while not saying no. Can you imagine the goings on with people working from home??
Don was the only person who tried to get Joan not to be a prostitute to Jaguar for a partnership.
She does it anyway and then betrays Don whenever she could. Joan showed her true colors.
In spite of Don's own flaws, he is a better person than Joan.
@@keithm9337Joan felt Don was the one being most judgemental and he reminded her of her unresolved feelings about what she did. As soon as he started losing accounts she went on the attack.
At last, something beautiful you can sloppily bone
Lmfao 😂
sterling cooper hire this man
One of the all-time best episodes of the entire series. The way they intercut these scenes was brilliant, and drove home the episode's point about objectification.
"Jaguar....this jagged wire may disconnect here while this jagged wire totally fizzles.....a headache you can truly own...."
I had a wealthy family friend who used to own 3 Jaguars. At any given time 2 of them would be in the shop getting repaired and he'd drive the other one.
My heart broke for Joan here, and to think that Herb guy wasn't so instrumental in the decision!
Wait what??? "that Herb guy wasn't so instrumental in the decision!" Please explain and cite proof
I don't know how, but I've only just realised Joan is the Jaguar
and he can not own truly own her
She’s really a cougar in the last seasons
No -- she is unattainable to Herb. He can truly own the campaign they're selling him. Joan is the ideal he craves.
Actually it’s the big fella.
@@reallyhappenings5597 Yes, Joan is what he wants to own. The car is what he can actually own.
Don's not upset that the firm was willing to let Joan sell her body to get Jaguar. He's pissed that it upstaged his pitch.
Years before Mad Men a Jaguar TV commercial featured the song "At Last" sung by Etta James
Those are two different stories 🔥
For a man who can't pronounce 'Jaguar' correctly, he does quite well 🇬🇧
I prefer the tag “unattainable beauty is only 8 years of monthly payments away.” Still the parallel between this pitch and joan selling herself is great writing!
“Unattainable beauty is only 18 years of monthly payments away....after the fact...”
Im not sure if it happens before or after this was don talking joan out of it. Only to show us the viewers that she already did it.
Don tries to talk to Joan out of it but the deed had already been done.
If you put a beautiful woman next to the jaguar the image of beauty and the machine coming together is the psyche of power and wealth. It calls the deep nature of a finely tuned instrument of power under your control that makes you become the center of this world.
If you pull the Lucas electrical systems from vintage Jags in favor of more modern systems, they’re actually quite reliable. The XK engine in the E Type and sedans of the era is a proven power plant
Is this before or after the boardroom scene where Don purposely butchers Herb’s pitch to the Jaguar execs?
Before. He despises Herb after this episode and undermines him that one time, before cutting ties with him at a client dinner.
"Well I have the opposite feeling." 😂
2:33
Joan: "those are 2 different stories"
Herb: "these are 2 different testicles"
😂
Not funny. This was a heart breaking moment.

Herb broke that ass, thats for damn sure

I just want to enjoy the sales pitch, man. Why must the rest make my skin crawl
“What’s the line?”
Jaguar. Let Me See ‘Em.
Jaguar. The cure for the common car.
Kiernan looks like him here.
02:56
"..let me see um.."
Herb is so HOT! 🔥
It’s Jaguar not Jagwah ffs! 😂
The foppish sounding guy in the commercial always says it like ‘jag-you-are.’
The American pronunciation is closer to the etymological origin of yaguara. The British overly pronounced jag-you-are is the one that's weird.
@@ericcrabtree6245 That is the way a Brit would say it.
Lane Pryce: "Jag-yu-ah"
in other words, nerds that can't get beautiful women should settle for a jaguar....
If that’s what you got from that pitch, you kind of told us everything about you lol. What a way to project who you are 😂 Most people can land a beautiful woman at some point in their lives under the right circumstances and if they know how. “Owning” her is a completely different story. A beautiful woman is hard to contain, there’s insecurities on maintaining it, keeping it yours, and it’s wild and hard to control. The pitch is assuring you that all of your work is rewarded by owning that uncontrollable thing in your life. It’s completely yours and only yours. That’s especially attractive to people with wealth and status that want to show wealth and status to make more of both, but without the insecurities everyone feels trying to keep both in the first place.
It's like poor Joan slept with Newman.
Gotta be honest; didn't care too much for this one; the pitch is basically deprecating the customer of a high-end product.
There’s a niche for that.
Why the hell do men associate cars with women?! It's bizarre!
Because a nice car is the quickest way to differentiate yourself in terms of class and status, something almost all men innately desire. Women are often viewed the same way, making the two closely associated in the minds of men.
as dale cooper once so succinctly put it, "Jade give two rides"
Curves. It's all about em curves in the right places.
@@soffa93 HELLLOOOOOO
Ask the sailors who live on ships why SHE'S taking on water...
Test
Some men want a jaguar. They are beautiful and exciting, but will leave you stranded and broke. I would rather a Honda Civic. They may be a bit common, but they are dependable and will be there when you need them.
Literally nothing wrong with "objectification". Or is there?!
Was the 60's
That doesn't exist at that time 😂
@@irvin_jax01 a better time? Arguably.
@@marty2090
I don't say that 🤷🏻♂️😂
@@irvin_jax01 🤭🤭🤭
What? I'd sleep with a fat disgusting woman for a good bonus. Nothing wrong with that 😃
Seriously though, that was gross even though it was just a few scene fragments.
i never liked the tagline they pitched for Jaguar. it's too long. great taglines are 5 words or fewer.
a better one: "at last, you've arrived."
That's not better, at all.
@@jesus199672 but still better than anything you can come up with...if your username is any indication of your creative potential.
@@kristopherryanwatson Man, what a loser.
that's not even a good comeback.
"Truly own something at last"
How many "Joans" are on college campuses?? You would not believe what some college women will do to get notes, books, advice.... There really should be academic prostitution laws!! At the very least in-class essays where spelling and punctuation are judged..... :)
I believe it

this show is cringe AF
then go do something you think is cool non-cringe
Yeah a lot of the situations the characters put themselves in is cringe worthy but that just goes to show how well written it is
that's kinda the idea of the scene and the entire series
Is reality (for most people) any better?
