  • The Fall harvest season has arrived at Just a Few Acres Farm, and we are busy getting our animals ready for freezer camp. We have pastured pigs going to the butcher soon, new piglets to start growing over the winter, turkeys and chickens to harvest, and one very special
Dexter steer to take to the butcher in a few weeks. It's a beautiful fall day and I take a farm tour to show you all the animals.

Love it when you put up a new video. The only other Dexter guy I know of! I raise the smallest of everything, because my heavy labor force is 11, 9, 7, and 6. The 4 year is our egg farmer, and I cut the 2 yr old some slack. She’ll be able to pull her own weight later.
Anyways, we raise Kune Kune pigs. Very docile, only 140-150 lbs. Guess what else they are? MARKETABLE! The urban sophisticated eater with money doesn’t want 2 or 3 freezers full! Same thing with the Dexters. THEY PORTION OUT PERFECTLY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT, AND CAN MAKE THE INVESTMENT!

I get it concerning cattle becoming pets. The head butts are cute when a calf is under 200 lbs. When that calf gets up to 5 or 600 lbs, not so cute anymore. I had a 'pet' 1900 lb bull that was so gentle I would fall asleep on his back while he was grazing. When he was about 2 1/2 years old is was time for market, that is the nature of raising livestock.

Livestock pets are just like any pet people take in eventually grow tired of it. My wife was big time into horses the stable was loaded with horses in 12x12 stalls hardly ever got road much. They buy them for their kids, or wife and grow bored with the animal after a few years the stable doesn't take them out these horses go crazy in these little stalls. My wife used to contact them ask if she could ride them just to give them some time outside the stall. Totally understand why be concerned with giving up livestock to someone as a pet.

it might help with piglet survival if they have a creep that they can go under and the sow cant go into. piglets that don't make it cost money in feeding during gestation, some simple changes can improve the outcome.

For those of us who grew up on and/or live on farms we get it when it comes to butchering animals we've raised. To be honest I think it's easier for children to comprehend than folks with a 20yr, 30yr, or older paradigm that's deep rooted. Heck, I thinks it's easier to understand most things in life at a young age. Philosophy, art, the meaning of life. We're geared toward learning then and more accepting of the realities of the way the world goes around. Anyway, thanks for presenting these subjects in a way others (non-farm folks) are more apt to respect.

We butcher hogs every year as a family. We buy them from a neighbor and do most of it ourselves.
We have been cheating a little bit by having the locker do a "kill n chill" which saves us some time, and costs very little.
Another benefit of doing it that way is that it gets the meat cold before cutting, which can be hard on Kansas some winters. And even though our locker is booked way out, they can work in a kill and chill pretty easy.

I have tried that, but the piglets still preferred being close to Mom. I've thought about doing the same thing, but with a heating mat on the floor instead. The weird thing is that some sows rarely step or lay on their piglets, and others do it all the time.

We just bought a small 10 acre property, that currently has 5 head of registered Dexters, two of which are pregnant. We have bought the cows, along with the property. I can imagine handing the animals over to a stranger is hard to do. I am taking the responsibility to heart, and want to give our animals the best life possible.
One of us has experience with dairy cows. Personally, I just know how to cook them. ;) We take possession near Christmas this year. I am feverishly trying to learn all I can in the meantime. You channel has been helpful, so thank you for that.
I would appreciate any advice on resources, where I can learn all I should know to properly are for these animals.
I am appropriately concerned about my own lack of knowledge going into this. I am a retired nurse, so I keep telling myself, if I can be trusted to take care of critically ill humans, hopefully I can manage to keep cows healthy. ;)

Hi Todd, we do it by breed too. Leg bands didn’t work for us.

Pete. Im from a rough part of new york. Yonkers to be exact. Ina dangerous neighborhood. Im 27 and ive seen people get shot and stabbed. Your videos are an escape for me from this harsh reality. I feel safe watching your videos. You make me want to be a farmer LOL. Here my family struggles financially to survive. But you have shown me you dont need to be rich to be happy. Im a huge fan of yours. I have nothing but upmost respect for you. Please never stop making videos we need people like you in this world. Thank you and take care.

Is all the meat put in the freezer and do you sell it frozen so customers can pop it into their freezer when they get home?
    Great videos Pete.

Hi Pat, we sell fresh chicken during butcher season. All our other meats are sold frozen.
