  • To understand the word 'balance', let’s look at its opposite 'unbalance'. So 'unbalanced' is not easy going, everything that is unbalanced is risky and may completely perish. So an unbalanced life would be a less productive and troublesome life.
To understand the concept of balance in life, we would have to look at it from the beginning. When our life begins, we’re blessed with some relations, usually parents. These relations we have to grow up with. As we grow older, we develop more relations. And each in each relationship, given at birth or acquired later on, we have to play a role.
There are two kinds of roles: mandated roles and elective roles. The mandated roles are those which our ideology doesn’t permit us to drop under any circumstance. For example, for a muslims, the role of son cannot be dropped under any circumstance, since Islam doesn’t permit it. Once you’re born to someone, you’ll always be their son. No matter the circumstances. Elective roles are those, which under some circumstances, can be dropped. For example, a muslim husband may choose to drop the role of husband and divorve his wife, Islam permits him to do that.
Each of us have to play some mandated and some elective roles in our lives. For example:
    Mandated roles:
    1. Slave of Allah
    2. Member of the Ummah
    3. Daughter / son
    4. Father / mother
    5. Sister / brother
    6. Uncle / aunt
    7. Nephew / niece
    8. Grandmother/ grandfather
    9. Grandson / grand daughter
    10. Self / human
    11. Breadwinner
    Elective roles:
    1. Teacher / students
    2. Son/ daughter in law
    3. Brother / sister in law
    4. Employee / boss
    5. Husband /wife
    6. Neighbor / college / friend
Whether a role is mandatory or elective depends on the ideology we follow. Above categorization is given according to Islam. As Islam clearly and beautifully defines the minimum performance level (MPL) in every role, once we start keeping our roles correctly we get balance in life. For example, in Islam the MPL for the role of a father would start from giving child a good name, training him or her with love and sincerity according to Islamic teachings and making him/her able to earn his bread in halal ways. If the MPL is not achieved in any role the life gets troubled.
