Nice collection, I wish I had kept my stuff, I remember after I moved out of my parent's house a few years later they moved and wanted to know what to do with all my stuff in the attic and I just said throw it out, so it all got trashed. But I had tons of ST mags, like every ST Format from 1990 to 1994 plus a ton of other random ST mags. And a ton of boxed games..
I got my Atari 520 STfm when I was like 7 in 1987 and loved STOS I remember being 8 or 9 making games with it, just copying examples, and stitching different things together, I made a game trying to copy Elite, but in just 2D so there was a 2D map of planets that you could travel to, and would have random encounters, either a combat fight or astroid field where you had to dodge and shoot your way though, then when you got to the planet it turned into a game of lander, once you landed you could trade and buy upgrades etc. Just thinking about it now, I am tempted to re-create it.

That was a fun video to watch. Definitely took me way back in time. Last Atari I had was the Mega STe. I used to run a BBS on it called Red Sector A.

Dungeon Master was my favorite game of all time... Put 1000+ hrs into this game... Loooove it! Wish I still had my Atari 520st

I discovered it during Summer School in 1988. The classroom had about 8 Atari STs and we just played Dungeon Master the whole time using maps we printed out. It was amazing.

@@GregsGameRoom I remember mapping out the levels on grid paper and slowly trying to figure out each spell and what it did.... Was 1990 when I got my 520st, my first year of high school

That’s a really cool Atari ST setup Greg! I didn’t know that there were any alternatives to TOS, or that the ST used SCSI. Back in the late 1980s, I saw Rick Dangerous running on an Atari ST (I don’t know what the model was) at my local Software Etc. and I was amazed by the graphics and sound.

I learned about all that cool stuff from the ST mags I showed. I should feature some in depth…

The answer to the problem is in the video! Anyone know what the keyboard fix is?

I didn't tinker much with the later Atari stuff, but wow Greg, seriously an awesome setup! One day, I'll hope you'll explain to us exactly how the 'fruitman' came to be! Also, I know I've said it in the past, but you should really check out one of those little TS100 or TS101 soldering irons. It's not that hard to get into and if any of your old systems need repair or even something as simple as a reflow, you'll be all set to DIY! Plenty of great tutorials on TH-cam to get you started.
Can't wait for the next video. 👍

I just needed a name to join a BBS and that was the first thing that came to mind. And any soldering iron I used would have to come with a robot hand because mine shakes when getting in close for detail work!

Oh man. the ST! (and now you STE) what memories of playing games on this and using it to survive college classes. Great to see you were once and ST user, Gregg! .I I hope you can get it working so we can see your STOS stuff.

There actually were a couple of dedicated Atari ST shops in Tampa when I got mine.

Funny you mention the STe, I recently experimented programming for that machine, trying to take advantage of its capabilities (blitter, hardware scrolling). Unfortunately, few programmers were interested in making software taking full advantage of the STe considering most of the installed base did not have a blitter. I personally had the original 520 ST in 1985 and never had the "newer model envy".

Dungeon Master was great at the time.. just upgraded my ST and started playing around but found most games were best to just have a fond memory of :) Still many games were fun!

17:36 You can easily find an EPSON SMD-300 drive which is a 1.44MB PC drive and fit it and swap over that STE faceplate. Fits perfectly and works! Also in the Mega STE/TT.

I'm just curious if it's my setup or what but I can hear lots of high pitch sound coming from the CRT monitor I believe ?
Believe it or not I am actually listening to this TH-cam video through my Atari Falcon 030 FDI+ (TOSLINK in-out) interface.

  • @saurondp

That's a nice ST setup you had. Always wanted the SC1435 monitor because of the swivel base that it had. As for taking the ST apart, had to do that quite often on my 1040ST thanks to the chips constantly needing to be reseated. As for the keyboard problem, I'm guessing it's either the keyboard controller or a faulty cap.

It can be a pain sometimes. The solution to the keyboard issue is IN the video. There's a bit of a before/after situation going on.

I had an Atari 600 for about a week. I took it back and got a refund. I then got a Commodore 64. Seemed like Atari came out with a new model every week.
