  • My personal farthest cross country flight on my paraglider. Launching from Klein Matterhorn flying along the south side, then crossing into the Verbier valley flying to Martigny, up to Fiesch and back home to Zermatt. I was flying a Ozone Rush 4 with a Kortel Kolibri Harness.

    Awesome stuff! Loved the video and the feeling of being out there with you in the mountains. The save was super sketchy, and I'm guessing that's a lesson learnt, I was seriously shitting myself just watching it... But hey, you made it and worked it back up again. Very inspirational for me!

    Hi Joel, you've now a good lesson in Aosta (Valpelinne) valley: never go South, downwind, downsun, when in the North side you get the most beautifull sunny 3600m thermal all the way long (still if all is covered by snow). The same for WesT/Est when you cross the border. It remember me my low exit from MerdeGlace in 1992, coming from Jorasses, but I hold the right sunny side all the time... ;-P

    Joel, I like your videos, but I have to ask if you are being honest with yourself? The title says "... with low save ...", but in truth it looks like a "very near miss". OK, you write 'sooo f****** sketchy' once you clear the dam, but you chose to fly down a dead-end valley, with a tail wind and entered 2-3m/s sink; yet at *no point* after that in the Doarama view or the video does it look like there was always a "decent landing option". I have been in situations on a great flying day, half way through a big comp task (150km?), when the adrenalin of a great mountain flight - and yours was one - took over my brain and convinced me that just because everything had gone well *so far*, it would carry on that way (the superhuman pilot fallacy). It just isn't so. So while I hate to dampen your enthusiasm, I think you simply "got away with it", which I class as an incident, and it is luck you are still here. Fly far, fly safe and keep having have fun, but don't let adrenalin tell you you are Captain Invincible. With respect.

      Hi thanks, well writen. All signs were showing that it should have had some lift there. On the valey crossing I looked at the place from a far for landing options incase there is no lift. There was a span of about 100m where it wasn't landable. About 100m befor that the sink started. At that point I had the option to turn around and definetly have to land in the not so steep snowy part or continue straigt. Where I was at 7:01 in the video it was very well landable, snow covered, so downwind landing wouldn't have been to bad (the 360° gopro makes it look more narrow and steep). The walking trail is right there. I could have packed together and walk out. Aftrer that it got more rocky but still flat enogh to land (I agree it would have been a dangerous landing. Backwind onto rocks isn't fun.) So I thaught I had enogh 'safety' to try and clear the wall. The air feelt smooth and not turbulent or lee sidey. I could have tried to climb higher on the first lift I got after the glide but because it was mostly soaring I could'n get much higher.
      It wasn't ideal and I was pushing it being to confident. Luck was defenetly at play and it shouldn't have to be. I'm not very proud of my descision making and if I could do it over it would stick around a little longer at the first thermal and try to get a few 100 meters higher and stay on the east face. And if I could reedit the video I would make more comments about safety aspect, meaby with a TEM aproach. The low save reffered to in the title I meant climbing up after crossing the wall.
      I hope others can learn from it. Learning from mistakes is best when they're not your own mistakes.

      @@joel.fuchs_ Hi Joel, thanks for the reassuringly honest reply : ) It is always hard to judge the terrain properly from an armchair with all the camera/lens distortion; but you definitely had me on the edge of my seat : o. Thanks for sharing the video though, it will serve as a good reminder to many of us not to just push on, to remember when to hold back a bit, to slow down (the racing mind), get the safe climb etc. A lovely flight though, all the same - keep sending them in : )

    • @joel.fuchs_
      @joel.fuchs_  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frazerwilson1843 The initial mistake was planing the route on google earth (summer pictures) and not thinking about how much snow there is. This isn't a good route to take early in the season when there is still lots of snow unless the base is super high. Once I flew into the valey I was commited and had to find a way how to get out of there.

      Weis nicht 100% warum. Etwa 6km vor der Staumauer hatte es noch gut 20km/h Süd (Bergwind) im Talboden (SAC Hütte mit Schweizerfahne Cabane de Chanrion). Ich war überrascht das zu sehen, aber das hat mir den Arsch gerettet damit ich so weit gleiten konnte wo weniger Schnee lag. Nach der Staumauer immernoch leichter Bergwind und ein paar km nach der Mauer leichter Talwind. Somit irgendwelche komisch Konvergenz? Einfluss des kalten Wassers vom Staudamm könnge möglich sein? Lee von dieser Ecke und des Staudamms, im schon stärkeren als gemeintem Talwind? Schwer zu sagen....
