  • Dividing her time between Nigeria and the USA, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has become one of the world’s most internationally-respected authors. After three acclaimed novels including Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, her most recent title, Dear Ijeawale takes the form of a series of letters to a friend about feminism and motherhood. In this event, filmed live at the 2017 Edinburgh International Book Festival, Adichie is interviewed by Scotland’s First Minister about her work and ideas.

i was raised in Nigeria and went to college in America. Stayed for 10 years. I did not enjoy most of my experiences with race especially and it was just a confusing and stressful time in my life. When i returned home, i never looked back.Till this day, i don't look forward to even having a vacation in America. Reading Americnah gave me so much closure and gave me understanding of my time there. It was like Ifemelu went through 80% of what i experienced. I can finally "look" at America again. It was too close to home for me and i'm grateful to Chimamanda for this book.

I would love to visit Africa 🌍 to have that experience to not be seen as different but; equal I have throughly enjoyed meeting her by way of social media I can see her in ancient times sitting on a throne as a beautiful queen with her wisdom, intelligence, character and integrity she could rule a kingdom and stand toe to toe with any man.

I first met Chimanda Adichie in 2004 when She came for her book signing at Waterstones Book Shop in Regent Street in London. I was there to get my copy of Purple Hibiscus signed. I remember her has a quietly distinguished writer after signing my book and walking around she said I noticed you are only Nigerian I see here. I said it's probably because they haven't heard of her. But since then I have followed her and read nearly all her books, but most of all is that I am proud that people recognise her as a Writer and also as Feminist. Thanks Chimanda for being a Role model for young Nigerians 🇳🇬 and to those who she has an had impact, in their Lives along the way.

Some of the other videos of her interviews in which she pushes back against inept, ignorant interviewers and co-panelists demonstrate both her vast intellectual abilities alongside her combativeness and refusal to compromise with idiocy. Here, talking with Nicola Sturgeon, she's in repectful, admiring company with an equally brilliant woman. Marvelous discussion.

I am Afro-America and I lived most of my life there. I found it to be stressful and at times annoying. Walking around in my beautiful African skin was like wearing a costume mask but I could never take it off. When I visit African countries, I feel at home. I don’t have feel like a criminal

I love Chimamanda but I was just thinking, that so many interviewers never challenge their guests and simply listen or agree with everything they say. I wonder what would happen if they challenged some of her beliefs instead of fangirling. Yes they were invited for a reason but I'd love to hear someone challenge a guest at times.

What would you ask her? State a challenge and allow some folks on here to rebut :-)

She does not force her ideologies on others. She is just honest. How do you challenge honesty? There is nothing more to add beyond honesty. So Kay, what are your beliefs?

Seeing her beauty without bleaching made me proud of being an African. I just pity people who bleach their skin because of the inferiority complex that they have to battle within them.

The anxiety that Chimamanda speaks of is what African Americans feel almost daily.
