- Théodore Dubois (1837 - 1924), Toccata, n°3 from 12 pièces pour orgue, published in 1886.
After study at the Paris Conservatoire, Dubois won France's premier musical prize, the Prix de Rome in 1861.
He became an organist and choirmaster at several well-known churches in Paris, including Sainte Clotilde and La Madeleine, and at the same time was a professor in the Conservatoire, teaching harmony from 1871 to 1891 and composition from 1891 to 1896, when he succeeded Ambroise Thomas as the Conservatoire's director.
He continued his predecessor's strictly conservative curriculum and was forced to retire early after a scandal erupted over the faculty's attempt to rig the Prix de Rome competition to prevent the modernist Maurice Ravel from winning.
His Toccata from 12 pièces pour orgue is his most famous organ piece.

bravo!! fellow organist here, and I wanted to point out something others may have missed: this organ is a "tracker", meaning that unlike nearly all modern instruments, there's a physical link between the keys and the pipes, with ZERO electrical assistance (notice the keys on the upper manual also moving). this takes a LOT of physical effort, especially at such a relentless pace.. I broke a sweat just watching this! ..again, BRAVO!
Thank you very much! You are right, there is zero electrical (nor pneumatical) assistance on this organ... And this is a real problem! This kind of Toccata requires a lot of physical effort. I had to extra train for this. I dream for electrical assistance sometimes...

I play the toccata section frequently on quite heavy tracker organs but I have strong hands which helps. But Anne-Isabelle’s playing of this is rather superior than mine!

Just home from practicing the middle section. Lovely rendition; I don’t have the bass reed so I found it slightly heavy but that may be envy!
Un grand Bravo ! pour cette perpétuation du souvenir de Dubois que vous servez, Madame, comme dans toutes vos interprétations, avec tant de brio. Aucun élève d'aucune classe d'écriture d'aucun conservatoire ne peut ignorer ni son Traité d'harmonie ni celui de contrepoint et fugue, de même que nul ne pourrait méconnaître le Traité d'instrumentation de Berlioz même si eux-seuls ne suffisent pas à ses études.

What I also like at this channel is that there is given substantial information to the piece and the composer in the description. This is very similar to another channel I like, too: @philipaggesen. That is not a matter of course on youtube. Additionally both channels offer high class organ music. Keep on the good work!

Les deux tiers de l’orgue sont de Cavaillé Coll. Le clavier de positif est de Haerpfer Ermann.

Another wonderful rendition and at the pace that I play it; just a tad heavy for me on the pedal registration, but it was fine at the final section.

One month of impatience ended with this nice rendition of Dubois' famous Toccata.Well played as it is the good standard here on this channel. Simply admirable that everything looks so easy in this video. Although I discovered this certain AIdP-smile not before 02:40 😉
It took a little time for me to to get used to the registration. But I found out that this short moment of hearing some entirely new and somehow strange may come from the fact that almost all renditions of this piece I heard before were played on non-french organs (and often with quite baroque principal flutes). Is this possible?

Moi, j'ai le traité de Durand, qui interdit quasiment tout. C'est tout juste s'il n'y a pas une annexe indiquant avec soin les punitions, pensums et autres flagellations que vous avez mérités.

Parmi les compositeurs romantiques tardifs français Dubois est l'un celui qui connaît trè bien l'âme d'orgue.Toutes ses oeuvres pour orgue me sont très chères, mais cette "Toccata" en particulier.C'est une pièce joyeuse,gaie,solennelle, charmante et digne, trè bien jouée. Merci pour la super interpretation.
