I am at the end of my first semester as a law student. At first, I was a mess, feeling like everybody around me was so much smarter than me but with time and with the help from friends, I accepted that I was here to learn, and therefore it was okay to feel like I didn't know what I was doing. Always remember that everyone is special and has something unique to offer. There are other options besides quitting, but be respectful of your limits.

@@Junebug-xm9ui if you happen to really like social studies I recommend, in the first semester all courses have been about social sciences, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, and even economy, I'm aware this will change from uni to uni, but here they make sure you really understand the structures behind the society we live in before going into the heavy legal and procedural stuff, although we had some technical courses like theory of the state and theory of the constitution
sometimes the subjects we discuss can be pretty grim which is a bummer, but we have to adapt law to what reality really is and reality sucks, so... but is cool to know that things can get better with a little work
I think is also important to mention that I study law in brazil and have little idea of how different things are in other countries, but generally is sort of an art, a dance between moral and law, of self and social, pretty cool stuff

Thank you for normalizing and showing us good and the ugly it’s such a learning experience to be by yourself and do adult things. Man this takes me back to my first week of film school, filled with existential dread, wondering what I was doing with my life, feeling like an imposter. I never ended up working in film, but I met the people who would shape the next 30 years of my life, some who are still great friends, and had some of the best times of my life. No regrets! Seeing your big portfolio made me laugh remembering what a pain it was to carry that thing across campus in upstate New York winter. Was like having a sail! Best of luck Camilla. You have way more discipline and talent than I had, You're going to do great. Savor every minute of it.

@@livflr My best friend from college got a job setting up a video production department for an ad agency and got me hired as director of videography (the department was just the two of us). It was mainly corporate video. While there I got into 3D animation (early 1990's). We left after three years and started our own company. Demand for 3D was high so I did that full time. That lasted for 25 years. Now I do 3D product visualization and marketing images for a large furniture company. Even though I taught myself 3D (it didn't really exist yet when I was in school), a ton of stuff I did study in school has been very useful. Composition, framing, visual language, color theory, film theory, video editing, etc. My major mixed in a lot of art and photography classes which ended up being really helpful, as did having the opportunity to learn computer graphics and animation at that first job. Good luck! Following your passion doesn't always take you where you expect, but it can still be somewhere you like being!

What I learned in college (I’ve gotten two degrees- in person classes) is that people “appear” to know what the professor is saying, but no one actually does. Everyone is just as insecure as you and they’re probably calling their friends/family saying the same things you are. You’re there to learn and it can be really intimidating! You’re really wise to say you’re going to give it some time before making any decisions to leave the class. You’re going to do great! And your art is fantastic ❤️

I know this feeling of u wanting to drop off but as u said it just see how it is gonna go for this semester, enjoy it ,give it ur best , work hard ,do all ur projects and the most important thing just prioritize ur mental health and ur wellbeing over school cause Ik this time when u pull an all nighter to finish a project before the deadline but plz don’t overwork yourself, so you won’t have the worst mental breakdowns . Make new friends ,and enjoy your time and try to get along with the college and like it I know it requires a lot of work and sometimes the lectures don’t make sense but it is just how it is everywhere, I wanna tell you that you are an inspiration to me and OMG the joy I felt in my heart when I saw the notification. awww girly you got this!! i just graduated from art school and lemme big-sister you through this.
first off: no one knows what's going on in art history, don't worry. everyone's just nodding along and pretending like they've heard these words before, everyone just pulls BS out of their ass - especially in the first couple of weeks. you got this :)) and it'll get easier as you learn more - you're not gonna fail, promise. (also, cute that you're doing the readings - naive and new to art school LOL, (it's not going to last LOL, you'll give up on readings by midterms haha))
    2. i feel you on the drawing class! and if/when you do painting classes - OOF; you ruin sO many clothes. I ended up wearing the same outfit every week to that one class because i simply did not have enough clothes to change my outfit throughout the semester
    3. don't stress girl about not having supplies - you probably know now but especially in the first day, most profs will (usually) be understanding if you don't have all your supplies- they know that a lot of students are trying to get the same stuff, so a lot of times art stores run out, so they usually have extra. if not, i'd always help out other classmates if they needed something, and most will feel the same, yall struggling together
    4. we all procrastinated. we all said "im going to do this entire assignment today to get it out of the way" and we don't even start it. it's normal, LOL enjoy the luxury of the first week where the consequences aren't that bad yet and you aren't that busy yet
    5. sorry to say, but the feeling of wanting to quit, isn't going to go away, i litearlly went through like 4 years of saying every day: "why am i here?" "why didn't i go into engineering?" "what am i going to do in the future" "this is so stupid." "I need to leave" -- but guarantee, a lot of the rest of the school is thinking the same thing; just gotta shift the perspective every once in a while and think about it like ... heY YOU ARE GOOD AT THIS, IT'S GOING TO BE STRESSFUL FOR A BIT, BUT YOU'LL GET THROUGH IT! Just remember that you like art, you enjoy drawing and making things and don't get all caught up about pleasing profs/instructors or being embarrassed in front of your classmates and let yourself just enjoy the process.
    6. don't worry, you're not going to fail. only people i know that ever failed a class in art school are ones that didn't show up, didn't finish their work, or didn't hand anything in. as long as you submit somETHING - you're not going to fail.
    7. be proud of your work more often! the assignments might be stupid sometimes, and they might be pretty meaningless, especially in your first year when they're teaching you a lot of basics, but make sure you are genuinely proud of at least one of your assignments at the end of each semester. i know a lot of people that went through a whole semester and couldn't find 1 piece that they liked. critiques can be gruelling and demotivating sometimes - you're not always in the mood to be roasted, and it sucks when you thought you'd done well and then get a lot of harsh critiques. so even if it's just a small part of it, maybe you just like the top left corner of this painting, or the colour palette of something, make sure you're proud of at least something. if it helps, make it a tradition to look through your art at the end of the semester (when you're probably going to be cleaning your room after making a mess of it throughout the last couple of weeks), to sit down with all the art and look through it, see how far you've come and find something you're proud of, and one common thing (keep it to 1) that you don't like and want to improve on (ie. anatomy, colour palettes, dynamic composition, etc.)
and something that I wish i considered before going into art school:
keep all your work. even if you hated it or you hate the outcome or did very bad on the grade, keep them, you'll be happy you did in the future when you look through it again and see 1. how much work you really did over such a short span of time, and 2. how far you've come.
you got this girl!! good luck this semester :)

I’m a new sub and I’m 53. I went to college at 30 when both of my kids were in school full time and I felt the same exact way! I came home from school every day and told my husband I was going to quit because I’m too old and I wasn’t smart enough. Well, like you after the first week I only broke down in tears towards finals that first semester. Then in the 2nd semester I remember crying when my kids got chicken pox and I had to miss a week and was so stressed out about it and the last time was when my husband was injured at work in another state and I had to miss another week. It literally got better each semester and by the time I graduated I had a 3.8 GPA. So this long message is to say cry when you need to but don’t worry - you will do amazing!! ❤

I felt like that for my entire degree 😂! I don't know how big your classes are but if you're in a position to ask questions and you feel able to, then if you want to..ask for clarity. I guarentee someone else will be happy you asked. You don't know what you don't know, no shame in that. Also you're there to LEARN not to understand what everything means already. Im currently a junior in art school, honestly i wanted to drop out for the first year and a half lol. I think the first 2-3 semesters were pretty hard for me because I felt very confined by the topics and it got a lot better once I was able to do some topics I actually really enjoyed. Even though I did not enjoy the first 3 semesters I still learned a lot. If you are a perfectionist, I recommend trying to get out of that mindset because I drove myself crazy and had horrible art block because I was trying to make every drawing perfect. Also I found it very important to make time for personal artwork too. Art school can be extremely stressful and its really important to make sure you are able to do things you enjoy outside of school.

Also, don't forget that everyone else is feeling exactly the same! They may look calm, cool, and collected on the outside, but inside they are freaking out just as badly! So if you're struggling, talk to people. How are you getting on with your roommate? It's been over thirty years, and I'm still friends with my college roommates. Probably due to shared trauma - haha!

You’re there to learn!!! Everyone’s there to learn. You have in INSANE talent, but you’re still learning, and that’s okay. It may feel like everyone’s better than you, but everyone’s at a different level. School is a place to grow and learn so embrace that and try your hardest. 💗

don't worry about not understanding somethings thankfully art is very free, after the basic classes once you reach the major classes and you see your improvement in art it won't be that bad. Trust as a fellow art student I had the same feelings of dropping out, push through YOU GOT THIS.

The first few weeks from home can be pretty lonely, especially if the food, sounds, weather, and people are REALLY different. But you'll adapt and figure it out. The town will start to become familiar, the people will not seem so different and your classes will keep you busy. You'll be fine. What you're going through is normal. You got this.

you're gonna be surrounded by so many people with the same tastes, similar goals and i think thats one of the best parts, im sure you'll have great friends to go into the path/hell hole that is university LMAO good luck and have fun at school

hey Camila I'm majoring in architecture as a freshman and I swear we had the same first week experience lol. I showed up to class not knowing what to bring, we played with paper to discuss "space" and "gesture", we had a massive supply list that left us all broke, and I have that same Bristol paper and cutting mat to make models. Good luck to us both!

Hi!! I recently subscribed but I have randomly watched a few videos over the years that were suggested to me. I find you to be super entertaining to watch and your art skills are wonderful!! Further education is very hard, and can be very competitive but it DOES NOT HAVE TO BE! You do not have to compare yourself EVER to still be intrinsically good at your outlet. You will get through this and you will learn, no worries. I wish you the best!!

I'm only like a minute in the video, but most of your classmates are most likely feeling exactly like you. They may seem like they understood everything in class but it could easily be them putting up a front and trying to save face. It's actually very common, so don't be discouraged when you don't know something. Better yet, ask questions! That's something rarely anyone does and is such a missed opportunity when no one says anything. That's what you're there for: to learn! It's ok if you don't know everything, but it is important to show that you are willing and enthusiastic to learn to your professors. If they're a good teacher, they will see that and be more than happy to help you. Keep it up, Camila!

You are doing great! It's important to do what you like and something you will keep doing in the future. Down the line you can find out which direction you want to go to. So maybe being an courtroom artist, art teacher, gallery owner or something else.
Also don't worry. It may seem as if everyone knows what they are doing, but most of them are also stressed out and rethinking their life decisions. You will be fine. Make friends, eat good and sleep!

The teacher laughing, students making incredible, brilliant art then there's me... Acrylic paint on my wrist, and one earbud working, and Befuddled by how to express emotions and empathy with circles.

Do not let professors or other let you down. Your art is absolutely amazing and others WISH they had your talent. These pretentious professors worry about technique and all this other stuff and are probably miserable because they can’t do what you or others do and hence that’s why they’re teaching. I had an art teacher who was very discouraging and she doesn’t even draw or paint and everything I did sucked to her and I do realism and comic style art 😑. Whatever you do, do not let these professors dumb you down and make you forget how YOU know how to draw or paint. Everyone has their own technique and their way of doing things. That’s what makes and ARTIST! 👌🏼 The BEST artists surprisingly never been to art school, or some just obtain the degree to be able to apply for art jobs that require it. So, don’t quit. Persevere and keep your art spark no matter what! ✨Keep going!!! 👍🏼
