I too like these tech videos. My i3 manual recommends charging to 100% all the time and there is no easy way to limit it on my wall charger. Respect your comments on this though. Thanks.
The charging performance of ID.3 58kWh is apparently very good. I saw a graph:
0-35% stays at 100kW
35-71% linear decrease 100kW -> 50kW
71-80% stays at 50kW
And it will only get better with software updates. 100/125 will probably turn into 133kW and 170kW charge speeds
Hyundai recomends charge the battery to 100% once each month.. But not every day, great video Bjørn 😀
Top balance the cells and keep them at roughly the same voltage but if higher voltage increases cell internal resistance (degradation)
Did you know that the LiFePO4 chemistry Tesla is planning to use in (some?) China production has even better lifetime and can be charged closer to 100% (maybe like 95%) without meaningful degradation? But those are heavy / not as energy dense though. I have this chemistry in my robot lawn mower.
why 100%?
I have a 2019 Kona in Florida (one of probably 10 in the state as the Kona Electric is not sold here) and I'm very pleased with the virtually not existing degradation on it.. I drove 34000 miles / 55000 km in my first 13 months of ownership and there is no sign of any degradation yet. The only difference that I noticed is that when I'm charging to 100%, the SoC BMS used to be 95.5% and now it is 96.5%, so it appears that I have lost 1% of my buffer in 34000 miles. I'd think that the high cobalt LG batteries in the Kona have extremely low degradation, probably also because of the conservative charging curve.. I don't charge to 100% frequently but I do DC fast charge at least once per week. All my cell voltages are within 0.02 volts and most of the time, all 98 cells are in sync. Since the BMS update, the charging curve of the Kona has changed.. It now charges at 58kw up to 76% or so and then drops to 36kw to 38kw and only at 78 to 79% it drops to 24kw. I do watch your charging videos! They are great! Keep them coming!

And I do drive a Kona EV 2020. Did 3500+km in July on it. And charged it full every day... Shiiiieeett
By the way in the hottest days in June in Stockholm then range indicator at 100% charge gave me 550km. And now when weather is around 18-20degrees it's around 410-420km

I think those cars don't have the new software on them? I loaded my 2019 kona to 78% @49kw.

Bjorn, if you have time for roadtrip with Kona, please consider trying live data from OBD dongle feed to ABRP. It seems that 1000 km challenge will be faster in Kona / eNiro compared to classic Tesla MS 85 (D). Thank you for your job!
If you are buying a used EV there's no way of knowing how well the previous owner treated the battery so the manufacturers should take this into account. I would think that being careful with the battery only rewards you if you keep the car several years.
And then the potential buyer pulls out his OBDII dingle and checks the SoH...
Indeed ...I would not buy a used EV before doing a charge/range check...it is not like changing batteries on your kids toys..

Anecdotally some owners of these Konas have got up to close to 500km range, so you don't need to charge up to anywhere near 100%.
I am achieving an average of 550km at 100% during the summer months in my Kona. During winter I achieve around 415-445km.

I heard James Cooke talk about very low charging speeds for his 85. That is some serious nerve...if around 50-60kW is now the max charging power. Those used to push almost 120kW at the low end!
So....maybe a 1000km challenge in a classic 85?...the Millennium Falcon would be epic...if possible. Or maybe a Trondheim race is even better?

I'd like to bring up these videos about Kona regarding recent news in Korea and North America (not yet Europe) about a recall to update BMS due to what I start calling FireGate. One thing in this precise video is that you calculate the total battery to be ~70 kWh while the press in Korea these days mention just 3% buffer (66 at most). Maybe Korean and export versions were/are different? That could be the reason of 13/15 fires in Korea Thanks

Poor Millennium Falcon. But there is still hope, maybe he got a new battery by now, the battery had a lot of km on it by the time the Falcon was sold. The Falcon deserves a 100 kWh battery pack from Elon. Got to reward the legendary cars.
The P85+ from Hansjörg von Gemmingen - Hornberg has now 1.111.111,11Km on it and also deserves a 100kWh pack, or maybe the new 120kWh palladium ones.
Bjørn i recommend you test the Falcon, we all want to see him again.
Charge what you need (60%?) so you don't drop below 20%. And the slower, the better (not necessarily the most efficient).
Bjørn. Watch battery modules MO1 - MO4 values, not avg/min/max from BMS... If 1 of 4 modules reach 35 degC BMS will limit charging from 200A to 180A (75kW to 67kW). My enirodashboard is used on several Kona's and eNiro's and it's the same for Kona 19-20, eNiro 19-20. >35degC = 180A, 25 -35C 200A, 15-25C 150A limit, 5-15C ... ,

Can you please test charging curve of 39,2 kWh e-Soul on HPC charger and normal 50 kW charger and take the charging test between that and 64 kWh e-Soul on both?
100% on level 2 I think that ok but charging on fast charger (50kW+) maybe not everydays.

My model 3 SR+ lives in the realms of 40% usually, waiting for available solar power. Suppose that's same as 50-60%, not worse?
Yeah. Tesla engineers have said 20-80% is a very optimal SOC. Personally I don't care that much and take mine occasionally down to 10 and up to 90. The degradation is so minuscule on the 3 as to be not worth the effort monitoring. Next gen batteries even moreso.

Checked on eNiro: only 10.2 kW goes into battery when car is powered on based on OBD.

@@tompekjo4098 I have a 2020 kona, and it is 7.6Kw if you use the T2 cable (the blue one) that comes with the car, this cable is single phase. You can go to 11kw if you buy a 3 phase T2 cable
Is recuperation reaches 120 kW as in 2020 eNiro? (Around 20% SOC)
eNiro 2020 has recuperation up to 150kW.

That Hyundai can't be commercialized in Portugal with that model name.
for tha battery degradation i recently read a paper on it ... its not only the state of charge you charge your batter to, but also the depth of discharge that degrades the battery.
something like you have around double the charging cycles if you only charge from 65-75% vs. 0-100% (and thats double the full cycles .. not double the charging cycles/micro cycles).

I own a Kona Ev and the charging is rly bad lets be honest ...
How quickly EV's go obsolete. This charging curve was reasonable in 2019. Compared to 2021/2022 cars it's utterly hopeless.
That's not how it works. I have explained this many, many times before. Tesla and many other car manufacturers will release the car and then gather data about charging. And when they have enough data, they will increase the speed. It seems like the speed was already increased once on the 82 kWh pack since winter.
@@bjornnyland but this is about the 64kWh Kona, I never saw charging speeds increase on this one.
My bad. I uploaded a video about Tesla charging today and I forgot that some people might be watching other older charging videos. The reason why Hyundai lowered the charging speed probably has something to do with the recent fires. But that's fortunately only for Kona. It's not generic for EVs. Lots of EVs today charge as fast as they did whey they were new. Asumming this single case applies to all EVs is incorrect.
@@bjornnyland true, I'm just a bit bitter choosing a "lemon" car which still drives amazingly when it's okay and not at the dealer. EV for life but I don't know what the future will bring. Many choices :)
