Years ago I played bass and sang lead on this song in a Top 40 band(!). I can attest to the difficulty of handling both roles live. Nice work (and hey, it doesn't hurt to have DG playing along!). So very cool.
WELL BLOODY DONE!!!!!!!!!!.... People don't realize how difficult it can be to play bass and sing at the same time. I LOVE that bass line! Colin Moulding is so overlooked as one of the great player!!! We used to play this in my San Diego band, but it dropped out of our rotation years ago. I WANT to post this on my Facebook page.... But I fear, if they see it, they'll not only want to play it again (which I do), but they'll now want me to sing it as well!!!... Crap!
just discovering the tin spirits/hi-fidels clips Bloody good band. Great stuff. Really, really great. Fantastic to see Dave Gregory playing. Thanks heaps (and thanks for posting) cheers from Australia
I've been a lead vocalist/bassist for over thirty years - this is one of my favorite songs - This bassist does a GREAT job on the bass line AND the vocals. Whole group is spot on.Cool ending too...love that beginning of And You & I
@TheGigRigDaniel - hope it all goes well. Looking forward to hearing your work. Good band and I have been a fan of Dave Gregory's guitar work for a long. long time
That's a pretty good version! Shows you just how complex that 'simple' song is! Yeah, I'm sure Andy never imagined having to play any of his songs past "Mummer" in a live setting :-)
@mtoohey100 ah, thanks mate. the Dels is just the covers thing, we're itching to go full time with the Spirits, but its all great fun. Thanks for posting
He is not playing the bass line. Colin in XTC had enough to do playing it with just minimal back up vocals. But Andy knew the sound he wanted!! It is based on a JS Bach line. By far the greatest, most amazing XTC song the boys had done!!!
@ChasBeauregarde - There's hardly any keyboards in the original (just the few notes in the bridge), so 2 guitarists, a bassist and drummer should be able closely mimic it.
Singing lead while playing the bassline spot on? Are you KIDDING me?!?! BEYOND well done...amazing!
Unbelieveable that he's singing while playing that bassline! Excellent job!
Thought only Paul McCartney could have managed that.
Sting?
Yeah! And “that “ bassline indeed!
@sleepypie You might want to watch the video again. I'm half-drunk, but I'm pretty damn sure the bass player is also singing lead.
Geddy Lee, Les Claypool and Mark King are very good examples of bassists capable of singing whilst playing exceptionally complex patterns.
2024 & still amazes. Bravo.

Singing and playing this excellent bass line. Respect!
That dude has two brains. That bass part is a bitch to nail all the way through in the first place! Absolutely amazing.
"Hey, let's play an XTC song!"
"No, let's play the hardest one!!"
Bass line absolutely nailed. I'm a singer bassist too, and it's HARD!
Brilliant version, love it.
That bassline is brutal and you surfed through it. You've earned my respect, sir👍
From one bass player to another... Bravo, bravo, especially in the bridge to sing it and play it. Whew, Im exhausted just watching.
...and then right after, Dave starts playing riff from a a YES song! ("And You And I" from Close To The Edge)
He’s just incomparably amazing. A guitarist’s guitarist.
Lovely 🌹 music. I want to buy some now.
Great baseline and I love Dave Gregory's guitar playing. Quiet genius.
that was damn tight, great.
Cheers! Well done lads!!!

Great! it helps of course having dave gregory in the band.
Chapeau. Never thought I'd hear this played live. That bass & singing? Wow.
Thumbs up all day guys! I only discovered this band/song a few months ago and you guys knocked it out of the park.
A superb version of a complex but classic song. Excellent
Kudos! And I can't express how jealous I am that you get to play with Gregory. 😎
Always loved that song. Sounded great. Thanks for posting.

I spotted that as well.....did they do the whole song?
Brilliant
I can't thank you enough for posting this. Brilliant band and I hope Dave G realizes how much he is respected.

nice Yes quote at the end
Nicely done, guys! At the end, I was waiting for "King For A Day" to start. :-)
I can't help but like it down a whole step. It sounds much melodic.
Brilliant performance!!! No keyboards and yet a very rich balanced sound. Kudos to the band. BTW great vocal harmonies too.
Soooo well done. Choice!
so cool
well done
Well done
Awesome gentleman, great vocals and music as well...
Amazing performance!
Legendary .
Incredible cover.
RIGHT ON!!!!...that was fantastic!.
Still absolutely brilliant.
Thanks mate 🙏
Well done for playing that bass line

Standing O! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow, musical calisthenics. I'm sweatin'. Great job on a great song.
AWESOME! Props to all of you!
Really good! and nice backing vocals Daniel.
Thanks mate, we do what we can for the greater good.
Excellent!!¡ where is the double like button.
I've never heard a better cover. Exceptional musicianship. That end part....please be upstanding... is hard to do as well
superb!!!!
Terrific!
Outstanding. And with Dave Gregory no less! How'd that come about, I wonder?
Dave is a member of that band.
Great job boys! Dug it!
@mtoohey100 ah, thanks mate. the Dels is just the covers thing, we're itching to go full time with the Spirits, but its all great fun. Thanks for posting
thanks, yeah, he's pretty groovy
Great !
@mtoohey100 thanks and glad you're enjoying the clips!
Sweet !
🤗🍺cheers
good job!
@raduking thanks mate, I do what I can
Just love *that* chord change. You know the one. I hope you do because I don't...
"And I may be the mayor of SIIIIMP-leton....." E7 with G sharp in the bass (E7 first inversion).
Top cover APPLAUS!
XTC themselves did NOT include "The Mayor of Simpleton" as a part of their set EVER as the notes indicate!
Wow!
impressive bassline
Great job guys! Singer did that song justice.
TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT PERFORMANCE! He plays the bassline AND sings *APPLAUDS*
Oo That looks a bit tricky! Glad I'm not doing bass / vocals. Great job guys
@mtoohey100 me too, the guys a genius. Thanks mate ;)
Aaaaaand .... into a Yes song.
Dave and Colin should pull a Steve Hackett and take XTC music on the road.
デイブ グレゴリーさん カッコいい❗
even without singing i never managed to play the bass line properly :)
He is not playing the bass line. Colin in XTC had enough to do playing it with just minimal back up vocals. But Andy knew the sound he wanted!! It is based on a JS Bach line. By far the greatest, most amazing XTC song the boys had done!!!

@aadamjacobs ;)
That’s exactly the voice, Even without Andy, you can hear it in his voice and phrasing.
Bass line is not too hard if you religiously practiced scales in your youth. Singing at same time? Fuggedaboutit.
