I thought that they changed the character's name to Shazam in the comics years ago to avoid the situation that they were in where they could not advertise the character using his own name.

That would have made more sense than Solomon LOL. We give it a pass because the pantheon was established in the 30s and they wanted to keep it consistent. Achilles and Solomon were not Gods, and they used Mercury and Hercules rather than their Greek names Hermes and Heracles.
