      Absolutely, he’d be campaigning for BrexitVote2. Truth is we should never have left the EU based on such a tiny margin, but because of that tiny margin, Farage would’ve insisted that the vote was too close to call and that a second vote is needed to be “clearer.” That man is always on the grift

      @arnoldrimmer4025 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Every single argument about young people being able to vote can be against any other group. But this point is immutable. If you are paying into the system you get a say in how it's run.
      Queue someone saying, not every 16 year old works. The obvious response to this is, does this mean only employed adults should be able to vote?
      HOWEVER... I still don't think young people should be able to vote until 18. The obscene targeting of young people through digital media for everything from celebrity energy drinks to gambling and right wing content. It's rife. Adding in the politicisation of this group will be yet another thing they get warped and bombarded with.
      We do not protect young people anywhere near the extent they need currently. Until we do so we absolutely should not open them up to yet another avenue of attack and manipulation. Putting them in the crosshairs more groups who want to use digital media to exploit them.

    • @gailforce
      @gailforce 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@arnoldrimmer4025 I'd argue that having the vote at 16 engages them in politics at an earlier age, so that when they do leave school they are used to politics and used to voting. The learn in school, learn from each other. Many 18-25 year olds don't vote because they don't get engaged in the process until later in life.... and we can see the impact of that in the opinions of the average voter.

    All this debate does, is glaringly highlight just how utterly unfit for purpose our decrepit voting system is. The ONLY reason that Starmer and Lab are not talking about Brexit (the most obviously destructive wrecking ball in perpetuity) is because our ludicrous FPTP system is so pathetically critical in getting into office. The fragility of our democracy is baked in! All by design to keep the Tories firmly in power, and in actuality we shouldn't be slamming Starmer about the lack of Brexit discussions, we need to be putting electoral reform and proportional representation front and center. In any case, Starmer is doing exactly what needs to be done by remaining schtum on B - he has no choice right now. Get in office, and THEN we start fixing the omni shambles.

    I think the attitude to 16 year olds voting is going to be influenced by memories of your own teenage years. Would you have cast a vote at that age that you would now regret? If so you might not support lowering the voting age. I'm in the odd position that I don't know. In 1978 the Liberal Party didn't field candidates in the ward I lived in, so If I''d had the vote at 16 I would have not been able to vote for my first choice, as an adult I've never been in the position of not having a Liberal, or now Liberal Democrat or allied party to vote for.

    If you can pay tax when you're 16 then you should be able to vote. It's fairly simple, but also young people are the future old people have had their time. That's the past. When you vote, you're voting on the future. You can't build a country based on ideas from 80 years ago with the best will in the world. They just do not understand how fast and different this new world is. They would vote to stop everything. Be back like the old days. In this case we will be immediately wiped out by our competitors abroad. England's current downer on young people is appalling and it's authoring its own demise.

    The only thing I can think of re giving 16 year olds the vote is helping young people tp engage in politics to a point where they might feel they know how to vote. Way back when I was 18 I didn't know what to do - we're living in different times now.

    Labour have made a rod for their own backs. Brexit is very unpopular, they're losing more voters to the lib Dems and apathy with that line. Their lack of any vision and no lack of plans for reforms are just infuriating. They say there's no money, but they're choosing to not tax the rich. Their timidity is actually causing them to lose support, i don't know anyone who actually wants to vote for them, despite really hating the Tories

    On Brexit! How about shutting out the ideologs and let pragmatic realists sort it out…on both sides. Evidently there are a grey row of desirable compromises ahead.
    And when you revisit Brexit perhaps you should have second thoughts on the sanctions in Russia? Talk about shooting ourselves in the foot…both feet.

      Hopefully by the time the UK is in a position to approach the EU about possible re-joining or some other mutually satisfactory relationship, either there will be no such country as Russia or it will be a much smaller, more humble nation working on finding its place in the 21st century. Meanwhile, we'll do pretty well out of all the contracts helping Ukraine to rebuild their infrastructure, and then lucrative trade deals when they're up and running.

    The thing that's different now is there are many more old people than they were in the old world. They are retired and they they have a powerful percentage in the voting. We need to rebalance that by giving 16-year-olds the vote. It's just balance . Balance of future and people worrying about their future against Old-Timers remembering old worlds and wishing it was all still like that. I don't blame them but normally that wouldn't matter. But we have a population inversion situation. So it has to be rebalanced. It is those young people that see the future. These old people they just don't understand and are easily targeted. And in many ways it's not their future that they're voting for is it?..

    Rejoin will not happen in the next parliament. At best the negotiations might start, along with taking measures to undo some of the damage. Any other assessment is a triumph of belief over reality & we all now where that gets us. No single market & no customs Union (in this parliament) does not mean there will be no temporarily thinned out versions. The fact that Labour have accepted that the future will ocur in the future can be hard to face for some. Next election is the Rejoin election.If a referendum It won't be a 2nd vote. It'll be the first vote for approx 10million "newer" voters

    I think Starmer could use the 'BBC' defence of being equally accused by both sides.
    As to what Starmer's stated opinion on Brexit should be, I'd suggest something along the lines of:
    "all matters Brexit" will be treated pragmatically and all cases judged on their individual merits and overall pros and cons for the country.
    The country has wasted enough time on Brexit since 2014?
    Certainly Brexit has been ideal for Putin regardless of whether or to what extent Putin had a hand in Brexit.
    Anyone for tennis?

  • @RavenRuled

    A lot of people do not vote because they don't feel anything changes no matter who is in. The country is fragmented and identity politics play so much into everything but at some point its like a Borsin cheese commercial. The cheese gets smaller but too many people are nibbling at it that you either are going to have to get more cheese (taxes) or you are going to have to just pick a couple causes most can agree on and go with it. Healthcare, security are the big ones. The issue with the Conservatives is they have a big police force that doesn't fight crime so people are unsafe. They failed to build an army to protect the country. They failed to secure borders also making people unsafe and an unhealthy population is just a domino effect on the rest of things. At the same time have a gazillion programs people depend on and not doing anything for themselves isn't going to work. We have a lazy society that thinks we should house and provide health care for the world not only for the people that wash up on shore but by giving money to the countries they come from. Can't look after your kids, can't make them a breakfast, really?

    Starmer (imo) is just waiitng to see who his main opposition will be. If it is a hard right tory party, he will remain quitet so doesn't give them an obvious attack line. If however it is a more centrist tory party, or even the Lib Dems, he will be able to revisit Brexit relatively unopposed.

    Government policy on higher education impacts young people at the age of 18 and only at that time in their entire lives. Really, they should be able to have a say in an election that will affect them when they are 18, before they are 18. It's not as if they can vote for a change in that policy when they are 18-21 and have that policy affect them to any great extent. by that point it is too late.
    So an 18 year old can vote on behalf of younger people about what will happen to them when they are 18, but not much of a say in what happens to themselves.
    That's just one point. In scotland 16 year olds have the vote because 16 is the age of legal adulthood, albeit it took devolution to reduce the voting age.

    If politics and basic law making is on the school curriculum then yes as it is the future they will be growing up in but so many of us do not understand how politics work and how law is made hence our beliefs and understanding in policies and political parties.
