Really good advice for helping young people channel their ambitions into a career. Young people need honest mentors who can share possibilities with them. If you can overcome a rough life and get a degree in accounting, the rest is just details. All you need is one foot in the door. One job offer at a decent firm and you're in.

Honestly I bullshitted my way through college. I was just a young black kid from the hood focused on the girls but I earned my bachelors in accounting last month and it made me start taking life a lil more seriously.
Now I am starting my journey towards becoming a CPA and I know I’m at a disadvantage. I have no field experience, I don’t look like the typical accountant, and I literally just started taking this shit seriously lol

Brother Wade appreciate this vid. Attractive career path flexibility within a field can make all the difference in whether or not that field seems like a good fit for a person or one to avoid - much like how the right tool doing labor work can make a task go from frustrating to something to look forward to. I too noticed how Accountants can advance to Business Manager, Controller or an executive position fairly seamlessly and dare I say swiftly compared to other lines of work in an organization especially since nearly everything that they work with usually somehow relates to the business processes and operations of that company. Helping a business allocate money, make money, save money and grow money is always going to be in demand. Nice overview bro 💪

Black, currently close to declaring my major in accounting as I’m approaching my jr year. This comment section scares me a bit but I believe it’s obvious that accounting is a great career field. It’s just a matter of whether it is for us black Americans as well ? I find myself questioning whether my race will hinder my opportunities or help them. Also anxious because I can be apart of the group of black accountants and cpas that represent us as a race in the profession and will lead to more black people pursuing fields such as accounting . It goes both ways I guess. But I do know that I enjoy accounting and really just hope it pays off in the end.

      Brother Ryan,
Your race will not hinder your opportunities. Please don't prepare that as an excuse. When you get the word no, think of Next Opportunity and not anything to do with your race...everybody gets told no sometimes but you must understand that there will be a yes. Accounting is a wonderful career and we need more of us in those fields to look out for us. Wise choice brother.🙌🏾

I am in my junior year and changed my major from finance to accounting because of the versatility that comes with it. Also, my first introduction to accounting was this semester: I took financial accounting -- and though it has been tough (I hear it is one of the toughest accounting classes), I truly have enjoyed the course. That's another reason why I switched majors. My professor says I just have a niche for it. But this video further confirms that I am moving in the right direction. Thanks for the info.

I was a Marketing, Operations and Statistics major. After I graduated, I work in Big 4 audit to polish some hard skills and want to learn something portable. I do not want to stay in accouting for long. The 2 years in big 4, I got a CPA and cultivate a detail-oriented aptitude. I then moved to equity valuation consulting.
Accounting qualifications is a good choice if you want to work in business, and to earn portable skills. I do not work in marketing and operations jobs because their job markets are ultra competitive. Those who get pure arts or sciences degrees are competing for the same job.

Hi, you've earned a new subscriber from this video alone! I'm currently in my senior year of high school and I intend on pursuing a career in accountancy. However, I have a few concerns I would love some help with and it would mean a lot if you could share your insights on them. So if you see this, I hope you could kindly take a bit out of your time and answer my queries (if your time and energy permits it, of course!)
1 - Would you recommend pursuing accountancy in the US? I'm currently finishing up my senior year in the Philippines via online schooling. My parents plan on sending me to a Philippine university, but I want to pursue a degree abroad. Also, if you have any recommendations on countries great to pursue accountancy, I would love to hear about it!
2 - Would you recommend pursuing a dual degree in Accountancy and a Tech degree (Information Technology, Information Systems, or MIS)? I had the idea to do dual degree as a means to prepare for the possible automatization of the corporate world in a few years time. However, I do have my concerns as there are only a few people pursuing this career path. I admit, I'm asking because I am a bit discouraged from pursuing it.
3 - How important is your chosen college in terms of accountancy job prospects? Does going to a good university really impact your chances of being hired in a great company/firm?
If you ever answer this, thank you so much in advance. Nonetheless, take care and keep safe. I'm definitely gonna check out your videos after I post this comment lol

You can go into data analytics and/or BI. Most data analyst do NOT have business acumen at the level of an accounting major. You know and/or can learn the business inside out through accounting. You can provide deeper insights--trust me this is a huge win. Plus, you can get to six figures faster in techish roles, but have more security by having highly valuable skills: accounting and infosys. I have a master's in infosys. While my degree has opened big doors, I'm seeing that having accounting skills, which I don't have, is not only good on a job but in life.

There are less black CPAs than there are black lawyers and black doctors. If you are not in an area with 20% or more black American population, it will be very difficult to find employment, especially if you happen to be a Black man. Good knowledge degree, but I would advise black men to pursue IT, Computer Science, or engineering. There is a lot less racial discrimination in those fields, those fields are much more racially diverse, and they usually pay better.

Not so sure if I agree with that. Especially when it comes to the money aspect. If you're very good as a CPA, you will at the very least become a Sr. Manager and Director and you'll make anywhere between $200K-$300K per year for life.

@@michaeldejesus8234 There is a CPA firm "good old boy" work requirement that you must meet to get your CPA license. So, you can't become a CPA if no CPA firm will hire you. Again, native black american men face the greatest amount of job discrimination in general, and it is even more present in CPA firms. So, if you cannot even get in the door, you are definitely not going to make to a senior management level. Just saying, if the local demographics are hostile in accounting as most locations in the USA will be, just go into IT, computer science, or engineering. They offer more and better opportunities with a higher likelihood for success for native black american men than accounting is willing to offer to most native black american men.

These firms do want to hire people of color. The problem is this is an industry that doesn't get push into the black community as do medicine and law. Also the last time I checked, I haven't seen many people of color working in tech either. Moral of the story, your destiny is based on work ethic. You can achieve whatever you want in whatever industry you choose if you want it bad enough.

@@michaeldejesus8234 The data supports what I have said, and a person of color (whatever that is) and a native black american man is two separate and wholly different things. Native black americans have built this country over the last 500 years through a strong work ethic, yet native black americans are still the poorest and most hated and discriminated against groups in the USA. So, those of us who live in the real world know that it takes more than a work ethic, although I am sure that might sound strange to an immigrant that has been welcome into the so called American Dream. By the way, I did not miss your point, I was simply speaking to native black americans about the job market for native black americans, and with yourself being an immigrant man of color (whatever that is) you obviously can't relate.

    MBA or CPA?

It depends on what you want to do in your career. CPAs usually make more if money is a factor.

I’m about to earn my BA degree in accounting but need 150 credits to take the CPA exam. Do most accountants get their MBA jus to suffice the 150 credits requirements? Also I do not know what type of accounting I would like to do.

    • @ElevateToTheUnknown
      @ElevateToTheUnknown  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@dontrealbrown225 No, most accountants don't get their MBAs. The 150 credits for a CPA is completely different than what a MBA will offer you. Getting a CPA is more cost effective than getting an MBA. You will need to determine what your ultimate goal is first before pursuing any. And if you want a decision made for you, go with the CPA.

lol accounting will be dead due to blockchain. You can't be a millionaire with accounting like in the old days and 25% percent of millionaires are accountants. The best case scenario is big 4 or bust. That is not a good career choice. You want a degree that opens up tons of options like math, cs, or engineering. It is stupid to waste 4 years doing extended high school instead of building a life for yourself first.
Imagine selling your soul for an 8% chance of self-employment compared to the 50% seen in construction or 20-50% seen in various medial practices.

@@ElevateToTheUnknown well to put it as simple as possible, with an accounting degree youre expected to hit 6 figures 10-15 years in your career and in most cases you wont even reach there, that is why my mental health is getting screwed because of how bad my decision was choosing this major, i could have easily gone into nursing, biomed, mechanical or electrical like most of my friends but here i am stuck, overthinking and depressed.

@@dawman7857 Not true. It depends on the route you take. Everyone on my path (public accounting) break 6 figures in 5 years. Also, 6 figures helps, but doesn't guarantee that you will become a millionaire.
