I've heard this as well since I was a child, eating at friends' homes with their families. The idea is the same. Mechanically, if you try to fill your mouth (literally fill, not just a few bites) with food it becomes very difficult and at times impossible to chew unless you open your mouth to allow for pressure differentials and simply to maneuver the food around. Of course, this is bad table manners, as is stuffing your face full in the first place. It seems confusing when first heard, and perhaps it is misspoken in many situations (this example included), but the reasoning is sound.
