let's not forget the fact that they made a 3D technology tool that didn't require special glasses to actually see the 3D effect, to my knowledge literally no other 3D screen thing does that, how cool is that?
There was actually an HTC phone that had the same ability- the Evo 3D. I used to have one- it was pretty neat, and the resolution of the screen was better, but I'd say the 3DS had a better effect.
I think that making 3D screens like the 3DS ones is only possible because they are quite small in size. In the research lab of my engineering school they were developing a 3D screen more akin to a PC screen in size (it was 4/3 and between 17 and 21") without the need to use special glasses. But I heard it was massively complex, as the bigger the screen is, the higher the viewing angle is on the sides of the screen and the hardest it is to make the 3D effect work correctly on the sides.
I recently picked up a bunch of 3ds games I missed, and the 3d in Ocarina of Time really feels magical. Being able to look around a fairy fountain in first person with gyro controls really made the console feel like a window into Hyrule.
@@Dillman502 - Actually, its not that it "makes up" for the lost resolution, no. The 3DS's screen its 800px wide, but 2D mode only uses half of those pixels, so a game in 3D mode really is increasing its resolution.
Finally, another fan of the 3D effect. For a long stretch of time, the 3DS was my main gaming console, and it was only after moving on to the Switch and PC that I realized how big of a difference the added depth perception makes in many kinds of games.
everybody keeps pushing for higher and higher resolutions, 4K, 8K, 100" 24K HDR10+ OLED, and I'm over here like "look, just give me head tracking 3D monitors at 480p and I will sell you my first born, and throw the second born in too if I need a new graphics card to use it" the 3DS was fantastic, honestly, both for the quality of it's games and the uniqueness of it's hardware. even now it feels like we left it with untapped potential. and I'm so disappointed that so many of it's features feel like they'll never be used outside of it. streetpass was great, 3D was great, Miiverse was great, just a fantastic period of time to be a Nintendo fan. the Swtich community and feature set pales in comparison.
The 3D effect was lovely when it worked, it literally added depth to the visuals and made game worlds pop! But as you said the requirements to make it work on the original 3DS were kinda a pain, and not enough games emphasized the 3D to the point where I’d kinda forget 3D was an option unless I accidentally bumped the slider. I wouldn’t mind seeing it return either but some tweaks would definitely help to make 3D gameplay more enticing to use.
The 3DS really needed to launch with the specs of the New model. That version fixed the main problem with the original by having the built-in camera constantly adjust the 3D effect to your eye position automatically so you don't have to do it yourself. Luckily I waited to get the system until after this model was out, so I pretty much have the 3D effect turned on at all times. One thing I will say is disappointing with it though is that apparently the 3DS doesn't even output full 480p; meaning it's running at a resolution _below_ standard definition. While it is a tiny screen so it doesn't look so bad, I can only imagine how effective the 3D effect could be on a more powerful device that could actually output in HD. That's where a 3DS 2 would be nice. But again if I'm being entirely honest, I don't know how a 3DS 2 would fit into the modern console landscape. Nintendo has already essentially consolidated their mobile and home consoles in the form of the Switch, and it would only feel like a downgrade now if Nintendo were to go back to producing a handheld-only device alongside the Switch, especially when there is a Switch Lite model now as well. At this point I would much rather prefer Nintendo iterates on the Switch than revisiting the 3DS, as the mobile + TV dual functionality is simply a more beneficial design. I guess they could incorporate the 3D effect into a Switch 2 of sorts, but again it would feel kinda weird that it would only be usable while in mobile mode. But eh, I'd still take it I suppose.
Also the 3DS uses a assymetrical filter which means to get the 3D it cuts it's resolution in half. With the 3DS already being 376p that being halved to just 188p is quite noticable.
@@ringyring Problem is, the only reason the 3DS technology works as good as it does is precisely because it's on a small handheld screen where only 1 person is looking at it from a singular angle. The 3D effect only works because a camera on the front side of the 3DS tracks your eye movements and keeps the 3D effect adjusted to the angle and distance of your eyes. If you have multiple people sitting on a couch at different angles, the effect suddenly doesn't work anymore.
@@MrMarinus18This isn’t true, all 3ds games run in 400x240, and in 3d mode the game runs at 800x240 with every other pixel directed at the other eye, giving 400x240 to each eye.
I used 3d 90% of the time, I have no idea why people said they turned it off most of the time or didn't use it at all. You're missing out on the experience
I just got a 3ds coming from a 2ds and i might be using 3d most of the time tbh I kept hesring about how bad the og 3ds 3d effect is but it's actually the same as n3ds until you start tilting it
Finally found someone that actually likes the 3D effect. It’s always turned on for me and I never had any problem with headaches. It just makes the games look like they have a better resolution and if the game is literally playing behind the screen like if you would see a puppet show inside a box. It’s the best I can describe it but it really makes the games look like they actually happen in the room and not on a screen. It’s still mind blowing to me but I think that almost nobody thinks like that, lol.
I remember when the 3ds came out and I saw the 3d effect for the first time. I was 6/7 I think and I was in complete disbelief. I even held my fingers behind the screen to see if they would appear inside the game! In my mind, the 3d made the games “real”.
3D Land was probably the best showcase of the 3D effect even outside of those illusion rooms. Without it turned on the perspective can make it hard to judge where Mario will land when jumping but suddenly with the 3D effect on it's easy as hell. I have a New 3DS myself but I think my model might be defective because even though it touts the super stable 3D effect it has a significant amount of trouble tracking my eyes to keep the illusion alive.w
I was one of the early adopters at launch, and I've had the 3D slider maxed out at all possible times. It was just too cool to be able to peek in to this interactive diorama unfolding in a magic box in your hands. There are games with bad 3D, but I was barely in my teens when this system came out and could only afford a few games per year, so I'd get the big releases and first parties, which all generally had good 3D. I'd consider myself lucky in that the 3D effect never bothered my eyes. It might've irritated me for a few days after trying it, but after that, I can have marathon sessions and go as long as I want with max 3D and feel fully comfortable. I know this wasn't the case for so many others. Maybe it just takes a while to adjust? But that's far too inconvenient for the 3D to ever catch on. Honestly, when done well, games in 3D are just soooo much more immersive. The added depth is huge, it makes worlds feel like more than just pixels. VR is the next step I guess, but it's requires a whole different way of playing and conceiving games, not something you can easily adapt existing games to.
Actually I got a pair of the old red and blue anaglyph 3d glasses and figured I'd try it with some games and it was actually really cool. I played breath of the wild with them on an emulator and it gave the vast landscapes even more depth. The effect was stunning. It felt like playing the game again for the first time. I'd recommend people give it a try, all you need is a decent PC, reshade and $5 glasses
@@davidmcgill1000 I have, I mentioned cemu because I think the graphical fidelity is a better showcase of 3d at least in my opinion. Especially Breath of the Wild that game is amazing in 3D. Mario Kart 8 is amazing in 3D as well, especially with the anti gravity. Dolphin 3D is really good though, Ive tried it with Mario Kart Wii but I can imagine it'd be good with stuff like Mario galaxy. Also tried playing horror games like Alien isolation and that also works surprisingly well at getting you immersed
Does this work with any 3ds emulators? Believe it or not, I still have never bought a 3ds. And they still won't come down in price a ton... and I don't have tons of extra money at the moment! I'd love a way to try out the 3d effect before buying a used or refurbished new 3ds... so yeah, does this method work with 3ds emulators? Or wait... even better... if I got glasses like that, could I just watch trailers for 3ds games on youtube? In 3d?
The 3D was amazing fun when it worked. I was one of those rare "pre-price-drop" people, and I remember crawling in the hole in Ocarina of Time to go get the sword and just....moving the slider from off to fully on and seeing how the tunnel itself spread out before me. Nevermind the games where it matteres, like 3D Land, which honestly made me realize how lacking all 3D platforming was before because holy shit the difference.
I couldn't agree more, I always thought the 3D effect was fantastic. I'm surprised you didn't mention Zelda A Link Between Worlds though. The 3D is beautiful in that game and a critical buff to the central gimmick of the game itself.
Nice to see I'm not the only one who genuinely liked the 3D effect. I mean yeah, I don't use it every single time I play my N3DS these days, but the times I do, I really do love it.
I remember getting the original 3DS in 2012 for Christmas, but in 2017 its internal battery ran out and it would no longer charge, so I ended up getting a new 3DS and was blown away by the improved 3D effects.
It's a shame that only Nintendo and Nvidia ended up being the only two companies that supported 3D with their hardware, and they both dropped support back to back, with the first wave of lowering support coming when Nintendo stopped producing titles with excellent 3D support and Nvidia mostly not acknowledging their 3D Vision stuff/stopped pushing companies to support it directly leaving it up to fans to handle all of the 3D fixes, and then later with Nintendo completely dropping the 3DS line and Nvidia pushing out a driver update that disables 3D Vision entirely, thus rendering the hardware useless if you accept the latest drivers and/or buy a new GPU that requires newer drivers. The Dark Souls Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Hollow Knight, Path of Exile, A Hat In Time, Resident Evil Revelations (....in HD with kb+m support), Borderlands 2, The Surge duology, Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Fallout New Vegas, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy 9, Soul Calibur 6, Street Fighter 5, Divinity Original Sin, there are just so many games that look so much better in stereoscopic 3D on the PC. Add on top of that emulators, including Citra, the 3DS emulator itself to play 3DS games with their native 3D support brought to the big screen at ultra HD resolutions, and nothing else can really compare. I have a VR headset too, but the resolution is a pretty huge downgrade from my monitor, but it at least tries it's best to do the job. On Citra, there's even a simple hack that you can do to increase the 3D effect up to 255% of it's original value compared to an actual 3DS. For now, the sun seems to be setting on this golden age.
The 3D effect wasn’t the only underrated and underutilized thing the 3ds was king for. AR and Street Pass! The 3ds had amazing use of AR and still the best I’ve seen AR used! If you had the AR cards at the ready you’d have a few games to play on your table, like shooting targets, in which one portion of the target shooting, you table literally opens up to reveal a small room where you have to look around and find the target. That is still mind blowing to this day. Also they had an AR Fatal Frame game that was awesome fun! It was called Spirit Camera, and had an AR book where cutscenes played on some pages and other had hands and faces pop out of them! And as for street pass, it was awesome gather Miis of people you’d run into and playing games with them as well! It was fun know that just by running into other 3ds user was helping you in certain games. And those Street Pass games were so addictive and fun! The music was really good in those games too! Seriously, 3ds is an absolute king when it comes to technology! Just not beefy specs that people unoriginally clamor for these days.
I just bought an OG 3DS Xl on ebay for $150. I wanted one when It first came out when I was 10 but family was too poor. Now I can buy one 10 years later😎
3d was big in early 2010s. I remember going to mall and seeing Sony's 3d TVs running PS3. There was also a Nvidia 3d thing that was released and than all of a sudden it just died.
I never used the 3D because I quite literally can't see it (two eyes are kinda necessary for 3D effects and I'm missing one), but even I thought it was really cool. So much so that last year, when I bought a backup system in case my 3DS dies, I still went for a New 3DS over the New 2DS. Here's hoping Nintendo brings it back one of these days, it was a really cool feature and I think they could get more mileage out of it in the future.
Timely video! I'm replaying Bravely Default on the 3ds and I can't get over how GORGEOUS each area is in 3D!!! I'm enjoying as much as I can right now because the 3ds might not always be around and as far as I know, the glasses-less 3D isn't that easy to emulate if at all.
I'm a huge fan of 3D, since I was a kid with red and blue glasses. I collected and experience many forms of 3D over the years including creating my own content. I was satisfied with my DS but when Nintendo announced a glasses free 3d handheld I was ecstatic. I got it once the price dropped.
@@1MainChannel Hi, the 3D video itself needs to be in anaglyph (red & blue) only. Any other video type won't work unless you have a video player that can set it to anaglyph mode.
@@toonhead2 yeah sure , the video need to be in red and blue , when i type on youtube anaglyph 3D , i get alots of cool video , but i just want if this gonna work on tablets or mobile phone or regular tv , but today i was searching a lot , and i know that its gonna work with any plasma tv , but i still dont know about other devices , another thing i just figure out there maybe a magazines that have 3d anaglyph picture, this is so coul bro , i dont know if this real , but of this real why 3D fail and people dont like it, maybe vr is the next 3D experience
@@1MainChannel Oh yeah anaglyph can be viewed in any format and any device, and yes even in magazines. It's very versatile, anaglyph is cheap but effective. You can even draw images on paper. I was always wondering why 3D didn't get a major following also. VR is the next thing for that.
@@toonhead2 bro i just watched a video , just search for (street art has two painting) so briliant , i like graffiti a lot , and i never see something like this in my country , mabe i will learn how to paint in walls , and iwill do this trick , i sure i going to win if there is a competition hahaha
I did find 3D uncomfortable on the old 3DS XL and only turned it on in half, but with the New one it's just gorgeous and makes those 240p graphics look great, which would otherwise be dull and outdated. I didn't play the Mario & Luigi remakes specifically because the didn't have the 3D effect: it's such a waste
personally for me the 3D effect makes it feel like I'm wearing glasses. You get that straining feeling in your eyes. It's not too bad when you turn the 3D down. With enough use you could totally not notice it. I recently tried giving it another shot after like what 11 years?
I felt the New 3DS XL was worth it for the improvements to the 3D alone. Unlike the original 3DS, it didn't give me headaches and being able to move it without ruining the 3D effect was a game changer (literally). I started using it a lot more because of that and came to really enjoy it.
The headaches though were not from the 3D itself. But rather because keeping yourself still enough to see the 3D takes a lot of concentration and coordination.
@@MrMarinus18 That doesn't change anything I said, though. I wasn't talking about the reason the 3D caused headaches. It's a flaw in the 3D mechanic that was corrected later.
3D is a requirement for me to use the system as it just is night and day how much it improves the visuals and depth perception. I lost my old 3DS XL last year when it released and recently bought a OG 3DS for cheep but was not satisfied by that size or the tense feeling of needing to be still for 3D to work so I now have a New3DS Xl and man does that face tracking stabilization work great. before I used the Citra emulator on PC and the Quest 2 VR headset to see the 3D with the app virtual desktop to render my pc in SBS side by side 3d and Citra's ability to show the games like that, also the Dolphin emulator has that 3D option for all Wii and Gamecube games its soo great that non VR games can also have that immersive POP, even the PC app Reshade can convert many PC games to 3D or other VR mods or injectors like the Unreal engine one are just fantastic for this niche community
I personally loved the 3DS from the start and never had that much issue with the 3D effect, even the first version. I always crank it up to the max (except for those games with no support).
Finally someone says it. Btw, I don't know if it's just me, but the 3D effect isn't just nice for gameplay it also just makes everything look amazing. Especially otherwise very 2D games. For example, Professor Layton and Ace Attorney games. It actually feels like you were just transported into an anime world. Some of the most stunning looking games I have every played, simply because of the 3D. I think it's because my brain registers i as "more real" because it's in 3D or something. And I had an old 3DS XL, not a new one. In general, 3D makes comparatively mediocre looking games look good, and good looking games like visual masterpieces. Whenever I turned it off, games just looked so boring, I turn it back on, and damn. I'm still blown away today.
I fucking love the 3D on 3DS. It makes games way better in my experience. Even on the old 3DS, I used it all the time. I bought a New 3DS specifically for the enhanced 3D experience. The only game I didn't use the 3D in was Resident Evil Revelations, which is a shame because that's a beautiful game. Unfortunately the aiming reticle didn't quite work correctly with the 3D on. Even though I like the game a lot overall, Pokemon Moon really disappointed me with how you can't use the 3D in battles anymore. It makes the battles feel kind of weak in comparison, lodged between the immersive 3D battles of XY and the more colorful HD battles of Let's Go.
It is a genuinely cool visual effect on games that use it well, and even on games that don't go for flashy 3D effects, having the slider cranked up still gives the screen some depth that makes it feel like a bigger display than it actually is.
I recently "upgraded" from a new 2DS XL to a new 3DS XL. I never really cared about the 3D beforehand but when I got my new 3DS I figured I'd give it a shot since it's been years since I've actually even seen the 3D. I almost exclusively play on 3D now. There are some visual hiccups here and there but overall I love it.
My favorite thing to use the 3d for is the streetpass puzzles, they really utilize the effect really well, they're like mini tech demos for the 3d effect
I bought the OG 3DS at launch, the effect was so poorly implemented that I never used it and eventually got bored of the 3DS completely. Fast forward nearly 10 years and I decided to give the 3DS another shot and try all the games I missed out on. I picked up the latest model of New 3DS XL and wow, the 3D effect is so much better. Now I always play with the 3D cranked to the max. It actually disappoints me that Nintendo started dropping the effect completely on later releases. Some great games like Final Fantasy Explorers, Blaster Master Zero, and the Mario & Luigi remakes (Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions and Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey) were 2D only!
I think the big thing about the 3D is that it’s entirely word of mouth. “Trust me, it works” isn’t enough for most people to shell out $250 or $170. The only thing that could really have done it for me would’ve been a massive campaign to show it off to a lot of people, putting the console in their hands.
We are getting a bit of 3D now with the rise of VR, it's not completely the same thing but it has support for emulators and if you get a bit hacky you can force 3D in a lot of games.
I was absolutely in love with the 3D. There were some games that drew me into it. I loved playing Zelda on my 3DS because the worlds I was exploring felt more and more real the more that I saw. I had to turn it off sometimes but I almost always had it on.
I bought a New 3DS XL a few weeks back and have been cherishing its 3D effect on pretty much every game I play. Games like Mario 3D Land, I simply cannot play without the 3D slider cranked. It's such a visceral experience that I regret I haven't experienced when I was younger
The 3D effect makes me feel like I'm not looking at a screen but at a world. I mean, the 3D makes the screen look like you can enter the console and live in the game.
My mom described it the same way. It's weird because I can't tell if it actually works for me or not. I can see 3D movies perfectly so I don't think my eyes are to blame.
i don't think It has to be necessary or add anything, in my opinion It makes games look so much better and it's great as a curiosity, so i don't feel the need to play in 2d, all other screens are in 2d, what can i say, i got the 3ds for the 3d experience and i don't regret It one bit
Just finally got myself a used 3DS for the first time, ordered it about a month ago and got it yesterday. I'm glad I picked the New 3DS LL model, I was blown away when I turned on the 3D feature. It looks so cool! Yes I know, it's late into 2023 and I'm here all excited for technology from 2011, but I'm happy I managed to get a hold of a console I always wanted as a kid. Don't know if I'll grow tired of the feature, but for now I've been rocking the 3D slider to the max. I'll definitely play again all the games I've already played on emulator, I really is nice playing them on real hardware.
I loved the 3D, I had it on whenever possible. Unfortunately my launch-unit's 3D broke a few years ago, and I find the XLs to be too large, so I'm 3Dless until I decide to import a Japanese n3DS.
With how popular portable consoles are in Japan it's a shame it's not the same overseas. 3ds could still be running today, or another model could have been introduced. I enjoy the experience of the 3ds in portable much more than a switch
The Virtual Boy bombed hard. A decade or so later, Nintendo tries the 3DS. The 3D tech isn't going away forever. Every time Nintendo gets an idea that doesn't work, they stick it in a closet and trot it out again when everyone has forgotten how it went the last time.
I'm going to tell my thing about the 3D effect, bc I live on Venezuela I almost never got to play any games of the 3DS by itself, I got an old 3DS likely the same year it released and I still have it in almost good conditions. But the games I've played so far of the 3DS and have turned the 3D option on, I gotta say I was amazed, being Sm4sh the game that literally showed me why I love so much the 3DS family, not only that game had a neat relive around models that make them look awesome in the 3DS(effect that you can't explain in video, becuase you need to live it and FEEL it) but the 3D effect added a lot of depth on it, though, I didn't used it too much because I have a poor view and after some minutes I start getting a headache. It's a nice mechanic that unfortunately wasn't used properly in the Main titles by Nintendo and neither in the Third party games.
I only ever used my OG 3ds. The thing is that readability is very per case, in SM3DL in general it's a great boon to depth perception. But since it gets smeary at anything above 00°00'00'', depth really has to be important for there to be readability gain.
i literally couldn't use the 3d because i have a lazy eye and the 3d didn't work on me... :') (since i have a 'lazy' and a 'dominant' eye, my eyes don't fuse the two images together correctly so a lot of visual illusions don't work on me! some of them do, but 3d ones with two overlapping images aren't one of them)
that's sad. If you want a description, nothing pops out of the screen. I have no idea why people think that. No, what it does is make it feel like you're looking into a box. It can be kind of weird to touch the back of the console and feel nothing. It's kind of like a portal to another world.
Imagine being physically incapable of experiencing 3D, but you love the 3DS system. Imagine being locked out of the full experience people keep on talking about because of factors you can't control. Yeah, that's me.
I was big into the GBA/DS mobile gaming years, but started getting back into it buying a 3DS at the end of its lifecycle and then a Switch. I went back and started playing the 3DS again since it had been collecting dust for the past couple years and was enjoying some of the 3D effects on a couple games a friend suggested I play. It made me think it would be cool if they did another generation of it with improved technology it would be even better now.
I just got a New 3DS XL and I love the freaking 3D effect SO MUCHHHH!!! I have it on at all times. I fully understand why 3D technology like this would never sell well, but god I wish we lived in a world where the average monitor and AAA pc game just came with an optional 3D effect. Imagine playing through something like Cyberpunk 2077 on your pc with a NO GLASSES 3D MONITOR THAT WOULD BE SO COOL Another issue with that is the performance would probably tank so much on big pc games tho...
I couldn't have a 3ds for years since I had no income due to the after-effects from the 2008 recession. Once I had an income, I originally planned on getting the 3DS XL, but then I discovered the upcoming New 3DS. What convinced me to wait for the New 3DS was that it would have a C stick and additional shoulder buttons, eliminating the need for the Circle Pad Pro accessory and that it had face tracking 3D. It was the best decision I have ever made, the face tracking worked really well. RIP 3DS eShop 2011-2023.
I remember playing on other peoples 3DS's back when they where new but I was never able to even see the 3D effects. Here lately I've been restoring all my old "retro" systems from my childhood. So I've also been buying up old hardware when I find it for cheap. I picked up a OG blue 3DS a few days ago at a yard sale for $20. No charger but they had 3 games with it. Luckily I had one of those cheap USB multi chargers that works for DS + 3DS + PSP and not only does it work perfectly the battery still holds a good charge. Anyway for the first time I can actually enjoy the 3D effect from the 3DS. The games look amazing in 3D now. To top it off the 3DS has some of my favorite classic titles like Ocarina of time and Majoras mask and the 3D looks amazing in both of them. I still have my switch and steam deck that I really enjoy playing. But I really do hope Nintendo makes another 3DS like handheld alongside the new Switch that's suppose to be coming in 2024.
I literally just got a "new" 3ds after all this time. It was used both lcd screens crack so fixed it up. Literally all this time I've just been using the Citra emulator, but it brought back a sense of nostalgia and joy playing on a hand held console instead of my phone, pc, or even the switch
I got the 3ds at launch, I was 13. I don't remember ever having an issue with it and I had every model through the years. I always keep that slider turned ALL THE WAY UP!
I was playing oot 3d and sat my 3ds down and looked away to grab a drink and looked back at the screen cause i heard an enemy, my head ended up in the exact correct position and that first glance gave me a weird perspective it was like i was looking into a pocket dimension that extended into my bed at first it was like magic
I recently picked up a new 3DS and I’m also really enjoying the 3D. I’m still amazed how well it works without glasses or anything. Even if I’m moving my 3DS to keep on beat in rhythm heaven it still works.
The 3d effect doest even exist in some later releases, such as pokemon ultra sun and moon. The only place you can play in 3d is the optional minigame where you take pictures of wild pokemon. I don't know how any times I wished I could turn on 3d for that game
I had one of these original models that sadly broke after the pins on the ribbon cable snapped. It was sad to send it off, my new 3ds xl just can't fill the hole it has left all these years later.
Because of an issue with my left eye which requires me to wear glasses to correct, the 3D effect used in this system never actually worked properly for me even with my glasses. I always just saw a second copy of the screen overlay and split apart from the original on the horizontal axis, rather than any of the 3D effects I was supposed to see.
Sometimes I find the 3D effect my New 3DS XL WORSE than on my OG 3DS. I think if you are playing in low-light for example, it has a really hard time tracking your face. Anyways, I'm weird like you and I always use the 3D. I actually can't play Mario Kart 7 with the 3D off, I'm too used to having it on.
I just had a thought: Imagine if we could play the Link's Awakening remake in 3D. How amazing would that be? It's like the game was made for it, except it wasn't.
I mentioned this in another comment but once emulators get good enough you can definitely make that a reality. I recently got a poster that was in 3D and it came with a pair of red and cyan 3D glasses and I tried them out playing emulators. Games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 worked so well for it. Trying to play Switch games didn't work as well for me but one day maybe. Makes me wish my actual switch could play games in 3D.
@@NCozy idk, if the games aren't made for 3D there will always be some issues converting them, and it won't have the effect because it wasn't included in the planning. But it's better than nothing.
@@FafliXx No trust me, it works like they were made for it and you have a lot of control over the depth. For Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart it worked flawlessly apart from some very minor issues with the menu and hud. It isn't like a basic filter, objects that are in the distance will look like they're further away and objects that are close will look closer. Using it to play BOTW and looking off into the distance is incredible and some of the tracks in Mario Kart 8 felt like amusement park rides. The only big drawback is that the colors look off because of the glasses, they have more advanced 3d glasses that are supposed to fix that but you need a special monitor and more expensive glasses
2:35 "Ah, but you seem to misunderstand. It plays Monster Hunter at 60 frames per second instead of 30. Absolutely worth the purchase 100%." ~ 15 year old me I mean like, I don't regret it though. It's 2021 and I still play Monster Hunter 4U on my 3DS. Still never use the 3D though.
How is the pixel density of the XL? I have a hard time deciding between a N3DS and a N3DSXL. The XL has the most pros for me, but I'm worried about the pixels being to large on the XL.
My biggest problem with the OG 3DS was that I got it as a school raffle prize in Japan, and then moved to the US. I couldn't use game cards purchased in the US however, and didn't have a credit card at the time. So I was always forced to wait for the next trip to Japan, and buy the expensive cartridges there. AND, my 3DS didn't change language to English, which is a good thing for me, because I could still practice the Japanese I learned even though I moved to the US, but bad in general because I bet other people found this annoying. Otherwise, I loved it (although your argument about the OG 3D being bad was also true for me).
yeah I still got an old 3ds and never considered getting a new one cause I figured it was much the same but now hearing that it isn't maybe I will pick up one why not? I still enjoying playing my 3ds games to this day after all
I can’t wait for the 4ds to change how I perceive time, and then rob me of my entire lifespan as the Mario game over noise plays in the background.
This made me legitimately laugh out loud. Beautiful
If you reach enlightenment you see the "You can now play as Luigi." Screen after you die.
tbh sometime in the future I can see myself owning a 3DS that dilates time. It would be very useful lol
Honestly the whole "Nintendo 4DS that can emit odors is coming soon" is a huge hoax IMO.
I hope we get a 3DS sucessor with 3D/HD mode
I'm literally the only person I know who plays with the 3d on for extended periods of time.
I'm happy we've found each other 😭
Haha lol
Lol hello ur not alone
I've never played the 3DS without 3D on max haha
same. both OG 3DS and New 3DS. that slider was stuck in the max setting for every game and it was great
let's not forget the fact that they made a 3D technology tool that didn't require special glasses to actually see the 3D effect, to my knowledge literally no other 3D screen thing does that, how cool is that?
there is a company called lookingglass that makes pretty good volumetric displays
Iirc there was one Sony tv for playing PS3d at the time but that’s about it
@@miloslavtokar1080 Wait seriously? thats not just a Prey thing?
Even to this day the 3d effect makes up for the low resolution and makes it feel like you're looking at real objects instead of pixels.
I recently picked up a bunch of 3ds games I missed, and the 3d in Ocarina of Time really feels magical. Being able to look around a fairy fountain in first person with gyro controls really made the console feel like a window into Hyrule.
@@Dillman502I just picked up Ocarina 3d myself and I agree the 3d in it is so fricking good
@@Dillman502 - Actually, its not that it "makes up" for the lost resolution, no.
The 3DS's screen its 800px wide, but 2D mode only uses half of those pixels, so a game in 3D mode really is increasing its resolution.
I honestly liked the low resolution
Finally, another fan of the 3D effect. For a long stretch of time, the 3DS was my main gaming console, and it was only after moving on to the Switch and PC that I realized how big of a difference the added depth perception makes in many kinds of games.
everybody keeps pushing for higher and higher resolutions, 4K, 8K, 100" 24K HDR10+ OLED, and I'm over here like "look, just give me head tracking 3D monitors at 480p and I will sell you my first born, and throw the second born in too if I need a new graphics card to use it"
the 3DS was fantastic, honestly, both for the quality of it's games and the uniqueness of it's hardware. even now it feels like we left it with untapped potential. and I'm so disappointed that so many of it's features feel like they'll never be used outside of it. streetpass was great, 3D was great, Miiverse was great, just a fantastic period of time to be a Nintendo fan. the Swtich community and feature set pales in comparison.
I feel like the 3d helped smooth games out and made them look semi-hd
I absolutely love the 3D effect. And stumbling upon this video juste made my day.
Couldn't Nintendo make agreements with companies like Sony to produce 3D TVs for Switch 3D?
I've always used the 3d in every 3ds game I've played, the "gimmick" truly doesn't get enough appreciation
I used 3d 90% of the time, I have no idea why people said they turned it off most of the time or didn't use it at all. You're missing out on the experience
I think they are right
It doesn't work
people were too dumb to hold the 3ds properly and now we dont get anymore 3d tech :(
I just got a 3ds coming from a 2ds and i might be using 3d most of the time tbh
I kept hesring about how bad the og 3ds 3d effect is but it's actually the same as n3ds until you start tilting it
Finally found someone that actually likes the 3D effect.
@@tankmchavocproductions6907 That was the exact same for me and I was 7-8 too at that time!
I don't think the 3D gimmick stuff with ever happen again. Mainly because VR has taken its spot but just does it wayyy better
You need to be playing in a well lit room.
Shoutout to Kid Icarus in 3d
Kid Icarus uprising was so great. I loved the multiplayer on it.
i love the 3d, its especially good on flipnote studio 3d, its so immersive, IT LITERALLY FEELS LIKE THE SCREEN IS A DOOR TO ANOTHER DIMENSION
This sounds amazing. I need this. Thank you for telling me about it.
Dolphin natively supports all the common 3D methods. Try it sometime.
In 3d?
@@pwnedd11 Don't know. Would have to look into it yourself. Just look up Citra anaglyph 3d or something
I loved using it on games that have things specifically made for looking at (smash trophies, streetpass images, Luigi mansion ghost capsules)
You’re not a the only one. I really liked using the 3D and still do.
Play the kingdom hearts ddd opening on a 3ds and turn on the 3d. It looks so good...
I've still gotten get past the Aladdin world in the first game haha Maybe one day
The 3D effect wasn’t the only underrated and underutilized thing the 3ds was king for.
I love how everyone says the 3d is gimmicky when they turn around and watch 3d movies.
I like the 3D especially on the Pushmo games, with all those vibrant colors
The 3d from the 3ds is actually good ngl looks like it's like looking through a window
I'm a huge fan of 3D, since I was a kid with red and blue glasses. I collected and experience many forms of 3D over the years including creating my own content. I was satisfied with my DS but when Nintendo announced a glasses free 3d handheld I was ecstatic. I got it once the price dropped.
Hii im a new fan of 3D haha iwant to ask you, can i watch 3d videos on any screen with anaglyph 3d Glass
@@1MainChannel Hi, the 3D video itself needs to be in anaglyph (red & blue) only. Any other video type won't work unless you have a video player that can set it to anaglyph mode.

@@1MainChannel Oh yeah anaglyph can be viewed in any format and any device, and yes even in magazines. It's very versatile, anaglyph is cheap but effective. You can even draw images on paper. I was always wondering why 3D didn't get a major following also. VR is the next thing for that.

I personally find them the same if you're not moving them
I mean obviously n3ds is better but only from different angles
A champion of 3D? Long live 3D
I personally loved the 3DS from the start and never had that much issue with the 3D effect, even the first version. I always crank it up to the max (except for those games with no support).
Same lol i just got my first 3ds and coming from a 2ds. Games are so much more fun with the 3d
I missed it was in the army and didn’t play video games hardly at all. Now I’m out and just ordered my first 3ds can’t wait
The New 3DS vs the original 3ds was night and day difference and I almost always kept it on.
It is a genuinely cool visual effect on games that use it well, and even on games that don't go for flashy 3D effects, having the slider cranked up still gives the screen some depth that makes it feel like a bigger display than it actually is.
The 3D feature was pretty good. I just wish Nintendo too more advantage with the technology before discontinuing the handheld.
Yo, just wanna say I really enjoyed this video. Your voice had alot more energy and you seemed passionate about the topic
I'm happy you enjoyed it! Yeah, I've generally been trying to have more energy in the videos, so I'm happy it's coming across ^_^
Quest 3 feels like a futuristic combination of the 3DS and Wii in a way. All the 3D, motion controls, augmented reality and portability.
I still love the 3D to this day. Glad to see some people actually feel the same.
I like putting my ‘new’ 3ds slider somewhere in the middle. I find it not too straining to my eyes while still maintaining a good 3D effect
The bad thing is that is not too comfy
I was absolutely in love with the 3D. There were some games that drew me into it. I loved playing Zelda on my 3DS because the worlds I was exploring felt more and more real the more that I saw. I had to turn it off sometimes but I almost always had it on.
I bought a New 3DS XL a few weeks back and have been cherishing its 3D effect on pretty much every game I play. Games like Mario 3D Land, I simply cannot play without the 3D slider cranked. It's such a visceral experience that I regret I haven't experienced when I was younger
i love playing mario and luigi dream team with 3d on, the bros attacks are amazing to see
The 3D effect makes me feel like I'm not looking at a screen but at a world. I mean, the 3D makes the screen look like you can enter the console and live in the game.
My mom described it the same way. It's weird because I can't tell if it actually works for me or not. I can see 3D movies perfectly so I don't think my eyes are to blame.
i just want a monitor with glassless 3d
i don't think It has to be necessary or add anything, in my opinion It makes games look so much better and it's great as a curiosity, so i don't feel the need to play in 2d, all other screens are in 2d, what can i say, i got the 3ds for the 3d experience and i don't regret It one bit
I hated 3D on Old 3DS, I love 3D on New 3DS it was worth the upgrade, but should have been the launch
I love the 3D in Samus Returns!!!
A 3d switch would be cool but I doubt that will ever happen
I loved the 3DS but I barely used the 3D mode cuz it hurt to look at lmao
With how popular portable consoles are in Japan it's a shame it's not the same overseas. 3ds could still be running today, or another model could have been introduced. I enjoy the experience of the 3ds in portable much more than a switch
well this was a good video and gave me a new open option about the 3ds 3d-feature so good job 🗿👍
Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed it
The Virtual Boy bombed hard.
(since i have a 'lazy' and a 'dominant' eye, my eyes don't fuse the two images together correctly so a lot of visual illusions don't work on me! some of them do, but 3d ones with two overlapping images aren't one of them)
that's sad. If you want a description, nothing pops out of the screen. I have no idea why people think that. No, what it does is make it feel like you're looking into a box. It can be kind of weird to touch the back of the console and feel nothing. It's kind of like a portal to another world.
@@jokx4409yeah that is true it more feels like you can put your hand in this screen it really doesn’t pop it just looks deep
I used the 3D frequently as a kid, and now I’m revisiting the console I’m using it again.
Imagine being physically incapable of experiencing 3D, but you love the 3DS system.
Imagine being locked out of the full experience people keep on talking about because of factors you can't control.
Yeah, that's me.
I’m pretty sure the amount of time I sat in front of the screen with the 3D all the way up is the reason I wear glasses now
I was big into the GBA/DS mobile gaming years, but started getting back into it buying a 3DS at the end of its lifecycle and then a Switch.
Imagine playing through something like Cyberpunk 2077 on your pc with a NO GLASSES 3D MONITOR THAT WOULD BE SO COOL
Another issue with that is the performance would probably tank so much on big pc games tho...
Cleared ul this myth and placebo effect in the latest comment on this video, glad to help! Gimmick in every sense.
Your commentary has gotten so good man
Thanks :)
still to this day I'm searching for a video that supports the 3ds's built in 3d video functionality
Y'all the new 3ds is definitely worth the money! So many great games on the 3ds plus the 3d on the new version works almost flawlessly
The New3DS does have the option to turn face tracking off in the system settings. Good to know for situations where it might not be very reliable.
Absolutely worth the purchase 100%." ~ 15 year old me
I mean like, I don't regret it though. It's 2021 and I still play Monster Hunter 4U on my 3DS.
Still never use the 3D though.
60 fps monster hunter is pretty beautiful to be fair
I love the upgraded 3D on my N3DSXL as well as the built in Amiibo funtionality.
How is the pixel density of the XL? I have a hard time deciding between a N3DS and a N3DSXL. The XL has the most pros for me, but I'm worried about the pixels being to large on the XL.
@@hrbatta To me personally the pixel density seems fine.
Imagine seeing an announcement for "The Nintendo 3DSwitch"...
yeah I still got an old 3ds and never considered getting a new one cause I figured it was much the same but now hearing that it isn't maybe I will pick up one why not? I still enjoying playing my 3ds games to this day after all
For me it was like "this is neat" and then quickly turned it off.
