How to repair EF Johnson Viking Valiant transmitter VFO Drift 18K Resistor

  • More cool Johnson repairs by D-lab electronics. This resistor in the VFO compartment is a real troublemaker and tough to replace due to its location. I have changed many of them over the years. You need patience and a steady hand for the task. This is a highly recommended procedure. Many classic Johnson transmitters have suffered damage due to the neglect of this impending doom. If you do not feel comfortable performing this repair, contact D-lab.

    Excellent presentation.
My dad is from Waseca, MN and his best friend in high school was a ham. He'd get a new rig from Johnson and test it out for them, and give them feedback. He'd get to keep the rig after testing.
I have an indirect connection (via my dad's friend), but still feel a connection to these things. Love them.

Terry thanks for these great videos! I’m picking up a valiant of my own very soon which should go great with my Viking ranger 2 and r390a. These videos will come in handy for sure. Hopefully I’ll catch you on the air soon. 73 de W8NAP

Great vid Terry last time, about a year ago, you put it underneath the chassis to keep it cooler. And remove as much heat out of the Vfo.

That was the Johnson Navigator repair. Actually that resistor was already mounted in that position. I normally keep it in the VFO compartment. Updating to the 5watt resistor lowers the operating temp.

I was thinking that a "see snake" digital inspection camera like a furnace tech/auto mechanic can get would do the trick.. I had a furnace inspected with one, and I never forgot how cool that would be to have that in my tool collection. Nowadays, there's a budget version for sale online or at a harbor freight store.

Hey Marsha !!! Nice to meet you, you are an awesome partner for Terry... nice job. !! Cool camera and glad it passed the sniff test.. LOL To get those pigtails clean I think you could have used some 90% alcohol and an acid brush but the exact deal works well too. Thanks for explaining this one... very good to know... Thanks my FRIENDS !!

Say a 6e5 I have an old Curtis Mathes that I checked for continuity was interested in using it ...
    Thanks

If you take the new resistor and super glue it to the aluminum of the box to increase the heat dissipation of the resistor it improves it operation. It works great and can be removed later if needed.

Since it's normally covered by the side plate, would there be any harm in using a Dremmel tool and cutting an larger opening on the side nearest the front to open things up for general maintenance?

I was wondering on what type of solder you use
Typucally I would use 60 40 tin/lead, that is a three state solder
    I now use 63 37 a eutectic 2 state solder.
60 40 can give you cold solder joints if the wire is moved befor the solder goes solid
63 37 goes from luquid to solid, boom, no cold solder joints.
    What is you thpughts???

  • @DeadKoby

Hi Terry... since you work on these old school radios, I figured I'd ask you... I have a Shure 707a style mic that needs a crystal/ceramic element. I'm not picky on having an exact element, just a high impedance one with strong output. Do you have a source? or are you a source?

You can get little inspection cameras like that (hook to your phone) for under $20 from China. Go to Ali or Banggood, and look up USB endoscope.

I once asked my dentist what he did with his dental tools when they wore out. He said he has a pile of them he no longer uses. I asked if might have one for my electronics hobby. He pulled out a bundle and asked which one I wanted, then just handed them all to me. Never hurts to ask the doctor!

Funny, I have overhauled and used a half dozen valiants over the last 30 years, and never once felt the need to mess around with this resistor. I think this is one of the great old wives tales or myths of ham radio. It is necessary to warm up these radios thoroughly, which takes a half hour or more.. but after that.. whats the problem ? Sadly, there is one guy prominent on ebay, who subjects rangers to a huge raft of ill-advised and unnecessary mods.. he calls "upgrades". these old radios have plenty of problems that all most all go away, after you shot gun the old paper and electrolytics, clean the rig thoroughly , with real attention to the switches and tube sockets, finding any wildly out of value resistors, and giving the thing a set of really decent new tubes. Then any real problems will surface and cant hide or masquerade. I see stuff like shorts and arcs in wiring harnesses, and other arc related problems. But the basic design was sound.. and seldom does it need "fixing".

I remove the resistor and OA2 using a zener and mounting the resistor to the lower chassis reducing HEAT! My drift is 30% of what it was before the changes shown in my utube : th-cam.com/video/z3FRLLt25Jk/w-d-xo.html . The rig looks and works fine now, drifty vfos are a pain in the butt. Enjoy W 😀 😅 D Y
