That's awesome. Might consider getting a tenor now. As an instrument fanatic with limited space and neighbors tired of my piercing soprano practice, this is literally perfect 😂
Awesome review, I've just ordered one from the Early Music Shop. I have mobility issues in my hands and was very slowly saving up for a cherrywood comfort knick tenor. At 1/13th of the price I was a bit concerned about the sound quality but after hearing your review I jumped straight on my phone and ordered it........ Now for the impatient 6 week wait 🤨 (with a bit of luck the bass one will be similar finger spacings, bringing the full range into an accessible range - unashamed hint at any Kunath people reading the comments)
I appreciate this review. I didn't like the sound of the instrument in the first two videos you did, but this one talks about all the different ways you can influence the sound and create the best sound on the instrument. Thanks, Sarah!
I wish I'd seen this recorder 1 month ago before paying several hundred to have comfort keys added to a tenor I have so I can play it. I love the traditional look of my wooden tenor but the Sigo would have saved my hands and my bank balance. I am currently learning Alto but the deeper tenor sound is beautiful and my preferred choice. This new Sigo recorder will make the tenor finally accessible to so many who thought they'd never be able to play one. Think I'm going to have to order one anyway. Love it.
Yes, this review has put the cat among the pigeons a bit for me, as I was about to pay to get another key added to my Mollenhauer comfort tenor - which already has some keys, but not quite enough for my ridiculously narrow hand span. Not sure what's better. The key cost and the new recorder cost are pretty much the same as I only need one more key (hole 5).
@@southboundagainI think if you already enjoy your wooden tenor recorder then having an extra key is probably the best route. For me, the tenor I'm having keys put on looks beautiful. I personally prefer the look of a traditional tenor but I'm still concerned the right wrist angle might still cause me problems even with comfort keys added. If that turns out to be the case then I'll definitely be getting the Sigo.
Thank you for addressing our questions in this review! I've gone ahead and ordered. I have a Yamaha tenor, but I don't play it much because I find it uncomfortable. I'm also hoping that this recorder may be a bit more responsive and agile, especially in the upper register.
Thankyou Sara! Your videos got me started playing the recorder. However love the sound of a tenor but to big and heavy for me. Order and very excitied.
Yeah, love the sound of my tenor but the stretch to cover the holes is hard. With practice I’m improving. However cannot play the C# 6 without covering the end hole with a piece of cloth. Not flexible enough to use my knee.
I'm learning to play the tenor recorder because I love the sound, but I'm having problems with my hands because my fingers are too short! So… now you have created a new need for me! ❤❤❤❤ I'm obsessed 😍😍😍😍

Sounds good, in my opinion better than the Aulos 211A that used to be the only budget ergonomic tenor, making this now by far the best option now for manually challenged would-be tenor recorder players. And it's even super cheap, too. I quite the look, too. Reminds me of the saxophone-inspired shape you get in several electronic wind instruments.
Wow! The Recorder can even be like this! So old and so new. Thank you for showing that! What happens with the condensate water? Does it collect on the bottom? Does it change the sound? One step towards ocarina
A) in our tests this was not a problem; B) How moist are the middle joints and feet of your recorders?; C) RESONA has been used for years in our Paetzold by Kunath basses in very humid regions. It is very mold resistant and the inner bore, treated with linseed oil, takes care of the rest. CONCLUSION: You don't have to worry.
I recently bought a Paetzold tenor which I've been very pleased with except a couple of keys tend to stick. It's pricey but worth it. Now Kunath produce this. Wow! It should resolve my problems with having a plastic tenor I can just leave out at home and pick up and play. It should also work in folk sessions. I found the Early Music Shop are offering it at £125 so I've ordered one. Looking forward to January.
Thanks Sarah for the review, I have a keyed tenor I still struggle with thanks to my short stature and tiny hands so this looks AMAZING! It may not be classically pretty but it looks like a brilliant and affordable option
I just received my new Yamaha soprano 314B that I heard you, Sarah, review. I just love it and your description of the sound being sweet is spot on. Thank you so much for all this information. I am so grateful and happy that you are a natural teacher and enjoy sharing knowledge. 🙏❤️
I can also imagine that this would be a great option for health-related l accessibility. I am still recovering from a brain injury and playing music is definitely harder, because carrying instruments can be quite tiring, or concentrating on all the little things that come with playing an instrument at the same time. I miss music a lot, so seeing options like this is great! The fact that it's light, it's a lower instrument that's in the same key as a soprano (you don't have to learn different fingerings while being able to play in a bigger range of octaves), you don't have to close the end for the higher octave with the knee (which can take more energy), it's cheaper and it still has a pretty decent sound, the finger hold makes it easier to hold. The curved head makes it that you can make it closer to the body, the fingers are closer together. All little things that could make a big difference for people who have to deal with physical or energy limitations and still want to be able to play music. This looks really cool!
Hey Sarah, that tooter made with "raw renewable material" reminds me of that carbon fiber recorder I predicted, If they get down on digitized design, they can make one deep as a tuba.😎
Hello Sarah, I find the fipple flute TH-cam world has a notable lack of three-hole flutes such as the tabor pipe and galoubet. It would be awesome to see you talk about them! I love your channel.
I play the Basque txistu. Not many txistularis up here in Scotland 😉 The txistu should definitely be included in any such video exploration of three-hole pipes.
Ordered immediately. I need a new tenor anyway, and this one looks like it will outperform my plastic Yamaha and give me some of the modern recorder touches I'm craving until I can afford something like a Helder Evo, since Mollenhauer don't make a Modern Tenor to go with my Modern G-Alto. I know, totally different categories, but this looks ideal for bashing out some folky tunes without having to worry very much but still sounding pretty good. And that right thumb hole for the full chromaticism... oh yes. Unfortunately it doesn't appear EMS have listed anything about black or green head joints, so who knows what colour I'm going to get... An F bass would be amazing, if they could get that into a tenor-like hand stretch, that'd be amazing. Or will they fold the bore even more and make it even smaller?? Very excited to find out. And then maybe if Kunath could consider the possibility of a C-bass... oh yes that would be delicious. Could finally make that kind of instrument accessible to a far wider audience. But maybe the physics just doesn't work at that scale.
Beware! That's what happened to me 5 years ago. I was seduced by that infectious enthusiasm. Then I bought one. Then signed up for the recorder course. The rest is history. I used to play the fiddle and guitar.
Sigo is a Spanish word which means "I follow" which is an odd choice for a groundbreaking new instrument that is leading the way. Looks-wise I'm not convinced, but I still feel I need one. Being able to cover the end slot with your thumb is genius!
Ooh I was hoping you'd review this! I tried it at LIFEM and liked it, but I'm very new to the recorder and wasn't sure what I needed to look for beyond 'this feels comfortable and I like it'. I was impressed at the price and really happy at the comfort. I have huge hands but my tenor still hurts - I had to reluctantly sell my Yamaha plastic because of the RH hole spacing. Aulos Robin is better but still not the most comfortable. I blame my weirdly bent fingers on that hand, possibly from years of the cello bow.
Me? Late? Of course not! A wizard arrives precisely when they are needed. This instrument is SO BEAUTIFUL, both in sound and shape. I've wanted a tenor for a while - albeit I'm out of practice - this may very well be what I order when I get there, though.
I want this so bad!!! I'm a super newbie to recorders, ive played Native American flute for many years though. This recorder actually shows the same responses to breath control that I'm used to on the NAF, it may be easier for my brain to wrap around this one lol! My only downfall is I'm learning alto because I love the sound... going to a C instrument terrifies me 😂
Beautiful review! Looks like a very interesting instrument to try. I absolutely love the "coin slot" idea, though i never had to use the knee when playing tenor!
What perfect timing! I've been wanting to go lower but thought that a tenor would be out of the question because of my hands being too small. This is exactly what I need! But alas, my wallet is also too small 😭😅
I really like this! I was just showing my husband your video of the Nuvo recorder+ for our daughter - and now I would like this tenor for myself 😅 I have small hands, so really had to try some tenors out to see if I could cover all the fingerholes. And this would be a nice second recorder for my daughter too... (She is 4, but you cannot start soon enough right? 😂)
I think when I’m gonna be older I will become a recorder maker (I really want to make the recorder more modern and see it in a orchestra there is nothing wrong with being a soft instrument but I really want to make this noble instrument explosive and powerful)
I need this! I have hand size 6, so even the Aulos 211A is hard to play fast for me.. but this recorder will be soo easy...only the look is not quite my style, but I can look over that fact :D
One of these will be perfect for me as an instrument to keep on my desk for casual practice and to incorporate into my electronic music setup. I have health issues and my hands can be quite painful, so it's not often I can play my Yamaha plastic tenor, even though tonally I find it a remarkable instrument. So for the Baroque repertoire I'll stick to my nice wooden alto, but for modern music and improvisation, and casual practice, this seems perfect.
It's interesting and tempting, since my hands are so small and not super flexible. Still a very beginner on the soprano right now though, so idk! Would be awesome to support the production of something so simultaneously quirky *and* accessible.
Yay! Been waiting for this one! I just got a 1960s Moeck Meisterstücke bass, it's so pretty. I'm hoping the Sigo will get even bigger sizes. Time to see what you think of it.
Oh wow that's cool! Definitely peaked my interest, mainly for its portability! But how does one clean after playing it? Curious, asking for a friend. 😂
I am really surprised how well the recorder sounds now. I critisized the tuning in your last short video. But now I think, that this recorder is a great invention.
Yeah Sarah, as far as the look, I was thinking of the big head creature musicians from the early Star Wars movies. Maybe trim it with super reflective or glow in the dark paint.😎
Hi Sarah, thanks for your fascinating review! May I ask 2 questions? With what material the block is made? And can the bore be cleaned with cloth as it is curved, or cleaning not necessary?
Because they are much cheaper in plastic, I have the tenor recorder in plastic. I have them straight (Yamaha) and bent (Dolmetsch, the intonation is not so secure and the keys annoy me) and I don't like playing either of them. I prefer Alto and Bass and deeper. 😂 I will definitely try the SIGO tenor. 😊
So looking forward to the bass if the same principles of reduced size/weight and reasonable price apply, but I can't see a major advantage to a Sigo alto recorder - ??
We try to offer instruments as fairly as possible. The tenor price is not easy for us, but we want to make it easier for recorder teachers to ensure that students can also afford the instrument. In our workshop, we have already made Yamaha F-alto for schools because the teachers did not want to teach with soprano. And there are also school works for the F-alto. It's a small market, but you don't find orchids on every corner either. And that's what instrument making is all about. Imagine what Virdung would say if he could see students playing alto, tenor, tenor and bass in an ensemble?
I'll have to wait for the alto version. I am currently still unable to use the tenor because I cannot manage the air it requires. I have a question: was the upper register less sonorous than the lower one? I got that impression.
I've ordered one. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. I don't play much baroque or Renaissance music; mostly Celtic folk and pop music. I have big hands but still find the traditional tenor tiring to play. And... The traditional tenor is pretty soft-spoken, but somehow the Sigo has a bold sound! And it has a nice open sound, perfect for folk. And aesthetically, I'm all in. I have always hated the traditional stairway baluster look. I like the clean lines of this, the bent neck, the thumb nook, all of it. It's a wonderful illustration of what is possible if you start fresh without preconceptions.
I looked up Kunath after seeing your short about this instrument, and was surprised to see that the Paetzold recorders are on their site now, and even more surprised to see that there is yet a lower Paetzold recorder since the last time I paid attention; one that goes down to the lowest C on a piano. I guess it must be pretty new, because I can't find any video of it.
You mean the sub-subcontrabass. YES, that's one beast. There's one in England, one in the USA and three in Germany with customers. Others are waiting for their instrument. But the success of SIGO has really taken us by surprise. We had expected orders, but this storm is incredible. Never in my life have I experienced this with a new recorder that has been introduced.
Actually, I am not so surprised. It is a true innovation, it solves real problems and, most importantly, it is priced right for the broader market. Rather busy Christmas for you this year, I am afraid... But that is a good problem to have...
Seems like they have a genuine alternative to regular tenors here. I was afraid it would be too much of a compromise, but at least in your hands it sounds good.
Hi, Sarah. Such an interesting instrument! could be perfect for ensemble work with children. What about the moist? how can swap it or clean the bore? As this is curved, is there some air resistance? Thanks for this review.
Just when I thought I couldn't justify any more recorders, you show me this. One ordered 😂, I am sure the other sizes will follow in time. If the bore is internally folded, how does one mop it out?
Great review! I'm really intrigued by this recorder. Does anyone know the distance between the holes? In particular, I'd like to know the distance between the C/C# and D/D# holes, since that's where I don't have much of a reach. Kunath, did you read this?
Do you think it could replace the soprano as the first recorder for 10 year olds? It would do my ears a world of good to bring the groups down an octave!
How loud is it compared to the Eagle recorder? Your experience with this instrument reminds me of mine with the Xaphoon, a kind of chalumeau (the maker calls it a "pocket sax") made of Hawaiian bamboo. It's quite small, only about a foot long, the lowest note sounding middle C (like a tenor recorder, but being a cylindrical single reed instrument, the instrument is only half as long). My first experience with it was rather disappointing, as the sound seemed choked and ineffectual. But on reading the owner's manual, I learned that one needed to take a larger length of mouthpiece into one's mouth to play, as much as one would with a bass clarinet or tenor saxophone -- which makes sense, as it uses a tenor sax reed. Once I did this, I obtained its full, rich tone and power. It takes vigilance, though, to remember this when playing, as it feel so counterintuitive to use such s deep embouchure with such a tiny instrument!
I don't know why no one thought of curving the bore back before. That's how a trumpet is made, yes? And those low flutes have a bent head joints. This is a long time coming.
Yes, but the Paetzolds don't have a kink in the part with the tone holes. Herbert Paetzold certainly made some changes there, but Geri put the compressed area in the tone hole zone. And yes, he's a genius!
Hi Sarah, I personally apologize to your fingertips for the sharp edges of the tone holes. It was my mistake. I finished the instrument. That wouldn't have happened to any of our team. jo Kunath

(I really want to make the recorder more modern and see it in a orchestra there is nothing wrong with being a soft instrument but I really want to make this noble instrument explosive and powerful)
Then, young friend, look at the Adriana Breukink "Eagle" recorder ! You will like it.
Thank you for a fun review!!!
What a game changer. The coin slot in particular has me really excited, high C# on the tenor is my nemesis
Tenors with low keys (the usual types) can do the high C# without the bottom whole, are you aware of that?
@@martiruhay Exactly. And it sounds very good and stable
I'm also intrigued by the F bass upcoming model. If it can be kept relatively compact and comfortable, it will be a must buy.
Ooh, me likey!
2:48 Whaaaaaa! Mind blown!
Beautiful tone
It seems so cool! I hope this instrument will be available on Amazon Canada one day. It would be easier for me.
My Aulos tenor, the stretch is too much for my little hands this looks ideal😊
My next purchase, for sure.
May 2025: sigo F-Alte will be shown @blockfloetenfesttage in Bad Kissingen, and the F-Bass will be shown at lifem 2025 (November)
If it has a sloped wind channel, is it easily cleanable? This is my question which came to my mind. Otherwise it looks like a great instrument.
Ah glad to hear it!
Happy Holidays😎.
Yeah Sarah, as far as the look, I was thinking of the big head creature musicians from the early Star Wars movies. Maybe trim it with super reflective or glow in the dark paint.😎
I like your ideas. Let's see which sigo design modifications will appear on the stages of the world.
Okay! I Just ordered one from the early music shop, and book one of Van Eyck for soprano (OR TENOR!) recorder.
Oh yay!
Pretty Kool!
Hi Sarah, thanks for your fascinating review! May I ask 2 questions? With what material the block is made? And can the bore be cleaned with cloth as it is curved, or cleaning not necessary?
Good question. Can the block be replaced if worn or damaged? Or does the entire mouthpiece need to be replaced?
Excellent!
Great review thank you! A question, is the block wood? Is it removable? Thanks again!
Love it thanks. Good price, good sound!
Danke, thanks, merci, hartelijk dank, gracias
I feel it has a nice mellow tome.
How do you clean the spit/condensation out? With a traditional recorder you can use a cleaning stick and a cloth. What do you do with this?
Lots of people have been asking this, so I’ll film a short video tomorrow!
Seems like they have a genuine alternative to regular tenors here. I was afraid it would be too much of a compromise, but at least in your hands it sounds good.
too much compromise = worse sound?
Hi, Sarah.
Such an interesting instrument! could be perfect for ensemble work with children.
What about the moist? how can swap it or clean the bore? As this is curved, is there some air resistance?
Thanks for this review.
I answered the question above. Conclusion: Don't worry
So.... you can pick up any recorder with any usual or unusual shape and size and adjust your fingering before even you try it once?
I'm interested to know how quickly moisture builds up in the windway. That's been my biggest problem as a beginner.
good question
Just when I thought I couldn't justify any more recorders, you show me this. One ordered 😂, I am sure the other sizes will follow in time.
If the bore is internally folded, how does one mop it out?
The logical progression of the Paetzold idea. This appears to be a very refined design to have achieved standard fingering.
My instruments are all 440. Can you pull the head joint a bit to compensate? Or does it affect the rest of the scale too mush
How do you clean the inside if it’s bent back on itself?
excited for it! I have small hands, so I suffer in all my instruments
Yes the same! I think there will be a choice of colours available too.
Vielen Dank für die promte Antwort @@Team_Recorder
Great review! I'm really intrigued by this recorder. Does anyone know the distance between the holes? In particular, I'd like to know the distance between the C/C# and D/D# holes, since that's where I don't have much of a reach. Kunath, did you read this?
It doesn't appear to open at the bottom. How might one clean it?
Do you think it could replace the soprano as the first recorder for 10 year olds? It would do my ears a world of good to bring the groups down an octave!
Not unless the child has already excellent breath control. Sarah said it requires a lot of air
I want one!
All it's missing is RGB lights and you can market this as a gamer recorder
I don't know why no one thought of curving the bore back before. That's how a trumpet is made, yes? And those low flutes have a bent head joints. This is a long time coming.
Yes, but the Paetzolds don't have a kink in the part with the tone holes. Herbert Paetzold certainly made some changes there, but Geri put the compressed area in the tone hole zone. And yes, he's a genius!
Sarah, please tell Kunath to make 415 pitch versions!🙏🏻
they're in the comments! go tell them yourself too hehe
@@oxoelfoxo already did! :)
