I just became aware that the Lifetime Aperty License is for two years. I wasn't aware of that when I recorded this video.

There's one small thing I'd really like to see Skylum change: it's the functionality of the eye icon in each of the edited tool's panels.
Instead of click and hold to see the "before and after" effect, it would be nice to make the eye icon "sticky" like that in the Photoshop layers panel, i.e. click to turn off and click to turn on. I think being able to toggle each tool's effect off/on is more useful than to reset the effect.

How would you say this compares to the new topaz AI?

Sounds suspiciously like Skylum is up to its old tricks again. Spending resources developing and releasing a new product and losing interest in the old one. The last update to Luminar Neo had nothing much in it.
Also I think you should mention that getting all the extensions is expensive if you bought Luminar Neo outright and extensions do not come with the base system. There are often sales but each extension costs and when not on sale cost quite a bit each.

Everything you mentioned is true. However, the last update or 2 had performance enhancements which I really appreciated. I do like the fact that extensions are an option so that the price of the main app stays where it is. Also, even if I were to buy the app and extensions, it would still be cheaper than purchasing a subscription with Adobe. Luminar is experimenting with subscription models which I do not like. But at this time, it is still competitively priced to other options.
As long as they don't strip away features from the portrait editing aspect of Neo, I can come to terms where they're going with this new app. Portrait editing is a niche segment of photography and many people may not need it or would greatly benefit from a more powerful portrait tool. We'll see how this goes.

@@ShoeGod we shall see. Could perhaps have been a more expensive extension and then would be still supporting Neo but I guess they then would have had to give it to the subscribers and wouldn't have got as much for it. So instead they have a separate subscription model for Aperty.
I would like to see some improvements in Neo's noise reduction and sharpening for a start and also speed improvements in all the 'AI' tools. They compare poorly to other products. I use ON1 PhotoRaw 2024 as well using Neo largely for landscapes where it's ease of use works but for wildlife and macro I go to ON1 where the noise reduction is far better and the sharpening is faster. ON1 is pretty cost competitive. I shy away from Adobe because I don't like corporate bullies.

@@torbjornvonstrokirch7674 Valid points. I guess it depends on how powerful the standalone app is. If it turns out to be weak, then it definitely should be an extension.
Improvements in the AI features in Neo definitely need some attention. I use ON1 as well (love it) and include it in my workflow if I need certain features that Neo does not provide.

I use and enjoy Luminar Neo (and Photoshop, Lightroom, DXO, Nik, On1, Topaz, PortraitPro, Optics) and was really looking forward to the new Aperty app until hearing more and more about it. It definitely feels suspicious to only sell 1,000 full licenses to it, to only sell them as a preorder (months before release) and to give a sense of urgency to help move more copies (If you don't order now, you'll never have a lifetime license, you'll be stuck with a subscription). I have a lifetime license for Neo, but as you mentioned they hide a lot of extensions, presets, plugins and other tools (like the AI features) behind an additional paywall at a high price.
Skylum has had a past of releasing applications (Luminar 4, Luminar AI) and then phasing them out to release a new application with a full-repurchase (Luminar Neo), which almost feels like a way around honoring the lifetime purchases as they're holding back updates behind a paywall. In the case of Adobe, 10 bucks a month will get you Photoshop AND Lightroom, with all of the AI features and new updates. I don't like the subscription models, but the updates that Adobe provides have been more than worth the price!
I feel like Skylum/Luminar Neo has also had some issues with preorders in the past, where the advertised features look great (the AI pack they offered, the season pass), they force a payment up front with the same scarcity of "We're going to stop selling this, so order now!", only for the features to release months later and feel a bit lacking.
I've spent plenty more on Luminar Neo after purchasing a lifetime license that it would have paid for 3-4 years of Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and I'm still being asked to upgrade my license to a monthly plan/membership or preorder this new product.

Suspiciously? So Skylum should just work on new products, new features and give them away for free? Every software company want you to pay to buy more. That'a how business works!

With the high interest in software alternatives to adobe, how about a video on using Apple photos? Especially with plug-ins we may already have like topaz labs.

    One Question for you Anthony...
I know you test and/or work with many photo software... Pls tell us the "BEST" and/or the most comprehensive ?? TIA

Interestingly, when clicking on the pre-order link, the price shows in R$ (don't know if this is because of a setting on my end, though)

add another "instance" when desiring to do something more than once with any particular tool.
