This is my favorite Soundgarden song. It’s about feeling pent up. Chris Cornell wrote this song while on a van tour in Europe. Stuck in a rusty van in a desolate countryside felt like being stuck in a rusty cage. Fun fact: He never wrote down the lyrics, they just always stuck with him. As far as the music, Chris said, “I wanted to create this hillbilly Black Sabbath crossover that I’d never heard before.” Great reaction, as well.

@@poundtacos4006 Right? I guess if you repeat something enough times, it really does become muscle memory. I'm still impressed with Anna Kendrick doing the cup thing while singing at the same time. But I'm also impressed by any drummer who can sing and play at the same time.

@@chrissampson7569 I would say most drummers play straight beats while singing which is pretty "easy", but I can sing and play Rusty Cage, but doing the odd riffs while singing is hard! For example this song would be million times easier to sing and play the drums same time.

The Seattle grunge band era was the best time in music for me and I saw them all live back then. Back then, concert tickets were affordable even for young people and we went to a concert somewhere every week. Today's prices for tickets are just disturbed and I wonder how the 20-year-old can still afford. Chris Cornell's singing voice was unique whether on Soundgarden, Temple of Dog, Audioslave or solo.

Hell yeah guys! ALL the love and respect for Chris Cornell, but the rest of the band are amazing as well. Matt Cameron’s drumming is admired by many drummers. At some point, you should check out “Only Love Can Save Me Now” by The Pretty Reckless. Nirvana, PEARL JAM, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were the main 4 for mainstream grunge. You did mention Mother Love Bone and Mudhoney for originators of grunge, but the only downside was they weren't really well known outside of Seattle or college radio. I'm very surprised you haven't hit up Janis. Piece of My Heart, Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Cry Baby, Summertime and Try are definitely worth your time. She was really amazing and another one gone before her time.

Pearl Jam is generally regarded as ‘number four’ in the big 4 of grunge
Here come 150 comments about what is and is not ‘grunge’
Soundgarden: Burden in My Hand, Blow Up the Outside World, Rhinosaur, Drawing Flies, Hands All Over, Birth Ritual, Flower, Beyond the Wheel, Pretty Noose (unfortunate title but one of my favorites)… there are so many great ones!
Piece of My Heart has always been my favorite Janis Joplin song. She really kills it on Cry Baby too. There’s also Me and Bobby McGee… there you go Hollywood, don’t be caught slipping when someone asks you to name 3 Janis Joplin songs 😆😊

So, he might have been imagining cruising the European countryside on a motorcycle? From Songfacts. This tune is a monster and conveys the sense of being stir crazy and ready to violently break out! I remember how guitar magazines caught on to Kim Thayil as a legit shredder. Looking back, it seems like efforts were being taken to ingratiate this new kind of music to metalheads and other fans of technically challenging stuff. Some grunge genuinely bridged the gap between their style and other kinds of already popular genres. Soundgarden certainly belong in that category. Those of us who were into more traditional metal or hard rock didn't turn our noses up at these guys, that's for sure. We dug Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and some metal guys really got into a lot of the early stuff from the Seattle "scene," as it were. Mother Love Bone and Green River and such.

My most embarrassing story..........sometime in 89 or 90, a friend of mine had put together a band for a showcase at a club called Mabel's in Champaign, IL. They were the first band of 3. One girl "danced" during their set.
The next band was Gothic Slam, who had one minor MTV "hit," "Who Died And Made You God?" Halfway into their set, my friends and I decided to head on out and not wait around for the headliner, who were promoting their latest album. We saw the t-shirts as we were walking out -- "Louder Than Love."
We left before Soundgarden even came on. We could have been 20 feet away from Soundgarden in a smallish club in the Midwest.

As the show went, FNM opened (touring on the Real thing), then Soundgarden (still touring on Louder Than Love, but with Jason Everman on bass (after Hiro left)), and Voivod (touring for Nothingface) closing.

One of he kings of alternative hard rock and metal of the 90's. I don't use the term "grunge" because it was invented by the media, and the bands themselves are like "wtf is "grunge"? Yet everyone uses it and it drives me nuts. Oh well. They were around in the late 80's before that word existed, it was just "alternative" music back then, to different degrees of heaviness. This one is pretty much a straight metal song. But yeah, this got heavy rotation on MTV back when they played good music.

I had Badmotorfinger on vinyl. If I remember correctly, Soundgarden numbered their album sides consecutively, and this album was side 13 & 14.

You guys NEED to review the Actual song, "Undertow" from the same name album, on ur show bro's!!!!!! Love you BOTH with a fury. Laura P from Boston, peace and love. Be kind, it's easy. Peace and love. ❤️❤️

Andrew from Mother Love Bone and Chris were best friends during their teenage years. At 16 Andrew OD'd, they were roommates. Chris was to be home but came in to find Andrew dead. It was the catalyst to Chris's tortured life.
So SO sad. I believe there's an interview where he talked about it or Edie Vedder does.
I know Eddie doesn't talk about Chris's end. He states if he tried to he'd probably join him. Chris's eldest daughter has lived with Vedders family for years and is considered a daughter.
    Makes me cry....

This song I haven't heard in years. The thought that popped into my head was that the song has a Rob Zombie Superbeast kinda feel to it. Great road songs.

Cornell’s voice was truly peerless. Jeff Buckley was amazing, too, in terms of range. Cornell was a fan and actually helped fund and produce the posthumous live album “mystery white boy” - worth doing a reaction or review of as well. Back to Cornell, though; speaking of his soulfulness, you should listen to/review his song “say hello to heaven” with temple of the dog if you haven’t yet. Crazy soulful tribute to their friend/ex bandmate Andy Wood, the singer of mother lovebone.

Great song by a great band. Although Chris Cornell was first inspired to write the song while on tour in Europe, I suspect the pent-up rage came from his upbringing. His older brother said the two of them were repeatedly beaten by their father, who was an alcoholic. Chris began experimenting with illegal substances at only 12-yo as an escape.
If you want more songs with soul from Chris, I agree with another commenter that you should check out “When I’m Down” - the live performance at the Troubadour in 2010. Written by Chris Cornell for piano. Incredible, soulful performance. There are lots of great Soundgarden songs still to react to, including The Day I Tried to Live, Mailman, Blow Up the Outside World, My Wave, and of course Black Hole Sun. I think Big, Dumb Sex off an early album (Louder Than Love) is also worth a listen because it’s a hilarious spoof of the groupie-obsessed hair metal bands of the 80’s. Of course, the F-word features heavily in that one, so not sure whether that’s something you want on your channel.
