Hill start assist is a great feature. The first car I've driven is a '76 Volkswagen Brasilia and man, I tell you back then, I would always sweat profusely whenever traffic stops on an incline. 😅

'73 Datsun 510 with worn syncros for me. That car perfected my clutch technique, including almost mandatory rev matching and double clutching! Hill assist would be nice, but don't miss it on the AP1 S2000 thanks to that 'trainer'.

Finally. Before, I really thought that the "Brake Hold" holds the brake when you're uphill and will still hold the brake even if you took your foot off the brakes, and will only deactivate when you step on the gas. Thanks to you sir.

I learned to drive stick on an 82 Civic. I don't think I ever used the handbrake while on a hill. It tended to have a fairly fast idle so I think that helped make hill starts easier. A few years ago, I had a Corolla and found it much more difficult start on a hill. Without using the handbrake it would roll too much. This week I was out with my son and we were test driving a newer Civic that had an electric parking brake. I was worried how to start on hills so I avoided them. Thanks for sharing how this works.
Same here. I learned to drive a manual on a 1998 Civic. That one had a manual parking brake. With these new electric parking brakes, I thought I might need to use heel-toe to start on a hill in heavy traffic. After watching this video, I'm amazed at how seamless hill assist is. It just works.
Great video! I'm new to driving manual and was looking for a way to get up my parking garage. I have to stop on an incline and wait for a gate to open, then pray I don't stall or roll back with people behind me.
Thanks for the hill start assist explanation. But I think you’re missing the boat with Brake Hold. Your explanation is great. My favorite use of Brake Hold is when I have to sit in lines (pharmacy, drive-through, car wash, bank, etc.). I always use it in those situations. So much so, that when I’m checking out new vehicles, I always look for it. I don’t use it when sitting at traffic lights, usually. P.S. By NEW, I mean a new Honda!
Found this before I got my '24 Integra Type S. Great feature especially for me, this is my first manual car ever (I'm 32yo). I got a lot of practice in prior on some older Civic's and even a super old Ford Ranger truck in a parking lot. Still need more reps and practice but this alleviated my one fear about getting a manual.
@calebbush6500 the Ford Ranger I got reps in is about 25 years old, so it has none of the creature comforts of a modern sedan with a 6 speed. The clutch was heavy feeling. The bite point felt like 0.25" away from a full release. I stalled that thing out so many times getting used to it but I'm glad I got that experience because any good modern manual is SO much easier and accessible. I had heard trucks with a manual were also way different than a similar aged car, and it was. I still have some levels of anxiety driving the integra even a month later. It's a lot better than when I got it home though.
Can you do another video that shows your pedals? This video shows how it works but I think a lot of people would like to know how it works from a user perspective.
Very innovative invention and it really comes in handy. I normally do half clutch on a steep hill or put gear on neutral and hit the breaks uphill but with this technology it will be much easier and convenient. #SAVE THE MANUALS

If you are on a hill the car will automatically do a hill start assist and hold the brake for a few seconds. I really only use brake hood when I am at a red light or in traffic and don’t feel like holding the brake while stopped
Discovered my civic had hill start assist the other day, never realised it for 2 years lol. Reason I noticed was it actually held me back a bit and I needed to give more revs than I expected to get it move off because the brake was holding on ... Good feature though.

My friends have newer cars and they have so many driving aids it's crazy, Lane assist , auto braking , adaptive cruise control, auto parking. Quick question.. a year ago i learned to drive manual in a 06 mazda6, i spent maybe a week or two and got the hang of it pretty quickly and kinda decent with moving the car at a dead stop and thinking about a 2017+ si. I would most likely be very rusty, do you recommend the civic as a good refresher and easier car to continue learning and able to be used as a daily?

Jonathan I like the sedan version because I just find it more practical. Easier to put things in the back seat and so much easier on those occasions where people need to sit in the back

Hello! I have a question. Say you completely stop on the hill, and Hill Assist kicks in, and cluch in, as well as holding the brake. Does releasing clutch deactivate HA? Or only stepping on the gas will deactivate it? cuz I guess some people are used to the operation of releasing clutch first then moving from brake to gas.
I havent tried releasing the clutch without giving it gas on a hill since it will stall the engine. when you let go of the brake hill start assist will hold the brake for a few more seconds to get going and stop you from rolling backwards. release the brake first then release the clutch as you press the gas pedal.

Song Chai from experience, hill-start assist won’t activate on slight inclines. If you want to be certain the car will hold itself on any type of hill, then it’s best to use the brake-hold, especially if you’re pulling away from being parallel parked on a hill in between two cars with very little room to work with.

Song Chai Yes that’s right, that’s one of the footnotes on the hill-start system. Electronic parking brake is definitely useful in those situations, and I believe it automatically disengages as well when you depress the accelerator pedal, which is convenient...though I really wish these cars still had the manual handbrakes.

Not sure what you mean by that. Brake hold just makes it seem like you are holding the brake when you aren’t actually holding it. Everything else is the same. If you release the clutch in gear you will stall the engine when stopped.

If I have the brake hold on; can I do this? Clutch in, go into first "No foot on the brake". and then move with gas and slowly letting out the clutch? Or would I be rolling back as soon as I add gas.
@@DecemberVang it will work but once you press the gas and release the clutch the brake hold will turn off and not engage again until you hit the brakes again. Need to be aggressive enough on the hill to disengage brake hold and get the car going forward without stalling.

Usually brake hold is for manuals since it is harder to get moving on a hill. but to answer your question you can leave it on and when you come to a stop it will hold the brake until you apply gas. no need to turn it on and off everytime you stop and go. everytime you come to a complete stop it will activate as long as it is still on.
@@keyboard5494 I finally used it on my wife's CR-V. They seem to hold the brake, but once you press the accelerator they release allowing you to move again. It does not release the brake before you step on the accelerator. I'm sure it will cause premature wear on your pads but I couldn't say how much. Seeing how people drive around here I doubt they are concerned too much with brake jobs or engine wear. They seem to be either standing the gas and standing on the brakes wherever they go.
Hey so how does it do going up long hills at high speeds? I have an 06 and it sounds like the motor is gonna blow up every time it goes up the hills my question is does it struggle?
My 2006 Sienna was doing the hill start assist on its own. But after changing the front tires and taking it into used car inspection it no longer holds on a hill when I take my foot off the brake. It gives me so much anxiety and I do not know how to fix it. Does anyone know how I can fix this on a 2006 Toyota Sienna? Is there a button I can push? Is there something I can ask the mechanic to tighten so it doesn’t roll back?
So you have to keep your foot on the brake while you're on a hill then quickly hit the gas before it rolls back? That sounds way more tiring and scary than just popping the handbrake.
You must be a noob. Having hill assist is quicker than using the handbrake. Constant use of the handbrake on hill starts can wear out the handbrake cable.
No.If you are good with a manual you don't need the hill start.Should have to turn it on not the default.It is the most annoying thing right next to the collision avoidance and the adaptive cruise.
@@ThePropperWay I prefer to have a physical link that controls the brake when doing a hill start. I know the software is smarter than me, but I want to feel the car moving forward as I gradually release the hand brake.
Well another thing you can do is when your on a hill you can slightly let off the clutch and the bite point will hold it and you won’t move at all but I don’t recommend it

the clutch engages and disengages the engine. if you stop and the car is in gear without the clutch being pressed then the engine will stop. wheels stop+engine stop if the clutch isn't pressed.
You don't want to use those features too much if you do get in a stick that does not have very cold and the other feature you will grow back into a car possibly without realizing it and hit the person not like you would want to without knowing it can't at least you know what you're talking about not like some people on TH-cam sound like a nice feature but you do want to know how to drive a stick without it too in case you don't have it on your next vehicle if they make a stick when you are ready to kick in another vehicle hopefully they will Honda is about the only car I would buy any stick in anymore it looks like the only car I would buy because it does not have a turbo and insurance is cheap and reliable

I thought Hill Start Assist was the car not speeding up past a gear as I started to go down a hill XD hence wasting gas and momentum. Ill turn it back on when I get back in the car XD
If you know how to drive manual starting on a hill is simple. No need to give it any more gas then you normally do. This feature going up would be good for first timers but after a month not as useful
Still comes in handy so you don’t have to think about rolling back into someone on a hill. Just gives a piece of mind and makes it easier to daily drive a manual.
Most people don't know the real reason why cars have this: auto start stop. If you have an auto and you let go of the brake, mash the gas, and the engine fails to start (defective starter motor, bad battery), the car will roll back and cause an accident. Likewise if you have a manual and you fail to notice the car didn't restart when you shift into gear, the same will happen.
Not true. The second you take your foot off the brake without brake hold you will roll backward slightly. There’s always people who pull up too close to you on a hill and you do not want to hit them.

@@ThePropperWay u have to learn the ‘process’ for your car, and it may not ‘work’ in the next car u drive (they’re not all exactly the same). Sure, you have to learn the traditional h/brake process - but that works for all manual / stick shift cars (except outliers like Mercedes). My car has it but I dont use it because safety first: *always* apply the h/brake when u stop on a hill. But if u like it then, hey, that’s great
@@jaywalker1233 can’t turn off hill assist on the Hondas and with electronic parking brakes it’s very hard to release it correctly to get moving on a hill since you have to be pressing the brake to release it.
@@ThePropperWay yeah can see that, my car’s setup disables h/start assist soon as h/brake applied - system designs are manufacturer/car specific but I’ll always prefer a conventional h/brake as it’s a 100% mechanical safety backup in case of major electronic system failure (pretty sure more+more RTAs are going to result from electronic failures..)

I learned to drive a manual when I bought one and drove it off the lot. Takes a little practice but it’s not hard

Break hold is so good for your transmission!! It is perfect for those long lights and long lines at fast food drive-through joints.

My first car, 1995 Subaru had hill start assist, but I have driven many 90s- 2000s standard transmission cars without it. Not just a 70s deal.

TehVortexx I learned to drive a manual when I picked up my civic si from the dealership. It’s a great car to learn on and it is very forgiving.

I have 15 civic si so pretty much on the steep hills I have to use a ebrake cuz I don’t have the brake button

I bought a, then new, 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and it has a button I have to turn on to enable Hillside Assist. Even says so in the manual.
Without hill start assist you can still use a handbrake start, but I imagine that’s more difficult with an electronic parking brake

Gusebewavy not even close. As long as you’re in the right gear it loves hills. Have no issue starting on hills as well.
Don't be afraid to let that engine loose. If you need the power, it's all in the high-end.

i was thinking the same thing, is it okay to use brake hold if you are on a significant incline at a stop sign?
Juanjose Lam hill start is automatic, brake hold you turn on and off. Doesn’t matter which you use. I’m not sure if the type r has it or not.
My 2006 Sienna was doing the hill start assist on its own. But after changing the front tires and taking it into used car inspection it no longer holds on a hill when I take my foot off the brake. It gives me so much anxiety and I do not know how to fix it. Does anyone know how I can fix this on a 2006 Toyota Sienna? Is there a button I can push? Is there something I can ask the mechanic to tighten so it doesn’t roll back?
I drove a old Toyota Camry I think it was a 2004 or 2006 and it did not have hill assist. It's creepy.

So you have to keep your foot on the brake while you're on a hill then quickly hit the gas before it rolls back? That sounds way more tiring and scary than just popping the handbrake.
Nope nope. I got a Citroen n it will hold for 2 seconds. It's really handy.
You must be a noob. Having hill assist is quicker than using the handbrake. Constant use of the handbrake on hill starts can wear out the handbrake cable.
Most new cars use electric parking brakes so you can't pop it. You have to hit the button and then it takes a second or two for it to release.
Especially when you have a electric handbrake, this is a need.
No.If you are good with a manual you don't need the hill start.Should have to turn it on not the default.It is the most annoying thing right next to the collision avoidance and the adaptive cruise.
Hill hold is great but I really really want a real hand brake. Thinking of buying an Si but this may be the single biggest reason not to.
Why do you need a handbrake? The car is front wheel drive. You won’t be drifting it
@@ThePropperWay I prefer to have a physical link that controls the brake when doing a hill start. I know the software is smarter than me, but I want to feel the car moving forward as I gradually release the hand brake.
Well another thing you can do is when your on a hill you can slightly let off the clutch and the bite point will hold it and you won’t move at all but I don’t recommend it

Hill assist is a greate feature but let me tell you, if you cant do without hill assist on an incline you cant really drive...

the clutch engages and disengages the engine. if you stop and the car is in gear without the clutch being pressed then the engine will stop. wheels stop+engine stop if the clutch isn't pressed.

It is automatic. It can not be disabled. Why would you want to disable it?

You don't want to use those features too much if you do get in a stick that does not have very cold and the other feature you will grow back into a car possibly without realizing it and hit the person not like you would want to without knowing it can't at least you know what you're talking about not like some people on TH-cam sound like a nice feature but you do want to know how to drive a stick without it too in case you don't have it on your next vehicle if they make a stick when you are ready to kick in another vehicle hopefully they will Honda is about the only car I would buy any stick in anymore it looks like the only car I would buy because it does not have a turbo and insurance is cheap and reliable
For the hill start you can not turn it off. Brake hold is the only thing you can turn on and off.
If you drive manual somewhere hill in China，maybe you gonna change ur mind definitely.It's not that easy hill start when you drive on Steep Descent Ahead.

I thought Hill Start Assist was the car not speeding up past a gear as I started to go down a hill XD hence wasting gas and momentum. Ill turn it back on when I get back in the car XD
There is no way to turn on and off hill start assist so not sure what you mean by that.
You simply release to the friction point of clutch then it starts moving. You need to be better at driving

If you know how to drive manual starting on a hill is simple. No need to give it any more gas then you normally do. This feature going up would be good for first timers but after a month not as useful
Still comes in handy so you don’t have to think about rolling back into someone on a hill. Just gives a piece of mind and makes it easier to daily drive a manual.
Most people don't know the real reason why cars have this: auto start stop. If you have an auto and you let go of the brake, mash the gas, and the engine fails to start (defective starter motor, bad battery), the car will roll back and cause an accident. Likewise if you have a manual and you fail to notice the car didn't restart when you shift into gear, the same will happen.

Not true. The second you take your foot off the brake without brake hold you will roll backward slightly. There’s always people who pull up too close to you on a hill and you do not want to hit them.

another pointless “sales feature” like TPMS - immediately apply the handbrake when you stop on a hill (as you should, to make the car safe) and release as you move off. Simples

u have to learn the ‘process’ for your car, and it may not ‘work’ in the next car u drive (they’re not all exactly the same). Sure, you have to learn the traditional h/brake process - but that works for all manual / stick shift cars (except outliers like Mercedes). My car has it but I dont use it because safety first: *always* apply the h/brake when u stop on a hill. But if u like it then, hey, that’s great

@@jaywalker1233 can’t turn off hill assist on the Hondas and with electronic parking brakes it’s very hard to release it correctly to get moving on a hill since you have to be pressing the brake to release it.

yeah can see that, my car’s setup disables h/start assist soon as h/brake applied - system designs are manufacturer/car specific but I’ll always prefer a conventional h/brake as it’s a 100% mechanical safety backup in case of major electronic system failure (pretty sure more+more RTAs are going to result from electronic failures..)
I have this annoying feature on my 2024 Civic. This is built for people who don't know how to drive stick shift, or who don't know how to drive period. I need to learn how to turn this BS off.
Or maybe just practice on hills , and you won’t need hill assist . I feel like this feature is for people that’s are just lazy
Car does it automatically. Can’t turn it on and off so don’t really have a choice. Most new cars that are manual all have it.
Hill start assist is for people who don’t know how to drive a manual transmission. Buy an automatic if you’re scared
