When in doubt, throttle out. 🤣
I drive a 1.3 so yeah, not much torque in it. When starting from a really steep hill, I use the handbrake then rev it all the way to 3000rpm or higher before slowly letting off the clutch until it starts pulling itself up without rolling backwards. It's annoying 'cause it gets so loud, but it gets the job done. 😂

I take it that you drive a petrol, as hill starts in a Diesel are so much easier. I took my driving lesson in a diesel and never stalled as it is hard to stall a diesel, but as soon as I got in my dads petrol, everytime I would pull away I would worry about stalling. Diesels are great.

easy way to do it without handbrake is to hold the clutch just before the binding point and use your right foot for the brake, when it's time to go let the foot off the bake and onto a little bit of accelerator

  • @pieflies
    @pieflies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Once you get used you your clutch, unless you’re on an extremely steep hill it’s not necessary to use the handbrake. You can just go foot off the brake pedal to the accelerator and clutch out to the friction point at the same time, then apply appropriate accelerator and gradually release the clutch.
It all happens very fast but you get used to it and then it’s just muscle memory.
On very steep hills you might roll back slightly so if there’s someone stopped too close behind you the handbrake might be a safer option.

Owned a manual in Pittsburgh PA, US (famous for our hilly urban terrain) - haven't owned a manual in years... really miss the control.
First *hours* I owned it, needed to drive through town and then make a two hour trip for Thanksgiving with my family.
Stalled twice in town because a Penguins hockey game was letting out and I had no time to practice. Made it the rest of the drive with only one stall.
But uphill starts on a 50-60° street and a car on your bumper can really make you nervous! I can attest to that!!!
Started watching engineering videos about worm gears and ended up here. Great tutorial!

For anyone that has ever had a problem stalling while learning at a light. I got a manual, my dad has been driving manuals for the better part of 30+ years. So as a good son I let him drive it, he stalled on flat ground at a light. It wasn't even the first light we had gotten to, we were already driving for about 20 minutes. At that light he stalled, He got honked at when he wasn't even stopped for 3 seconds at that point. He was so embarrassed, and was so disappointed that people were upset. I promise you that nobody cares about you driving a manual and they will honk but the biggest thing to learn is to keep going, don't get frustrated or upset, just restart the engine and get moving. Half the people on the road won't respect you for driving a manual but to everyone that does you're a hero for the willingness to push through.

Paynos Keeping the heel of the floor is taught by every Indian instructor. The reason is Indian driving school cars mostly use cheap low power highly damaged cars. They are so difficult to drive that these Indian instructors know every little dirty trick. Powerful cars with good clutch have enough power to easily start rolling. If an average American driver is a sheriff, then an average Indian driver is a Vietnam guerilla soldier.

With time and practice you may become more confident in performing hill starts, or even driving up a hill in general. I'm still not a huge fan of doing it myself after over a year of solo driving in my own car, but every time I do just fine because of the experience - mostly from driving by myself, but it all started with my lessons with my instructor. You will find driving after you've passed your practical and theory is where you really learn to drive and, importantly, gain confidence and competence. All the best with it, my dude.

Diesel cars are a bit confusing because they have different torque bands as they distribute power slightly differently.

I found this actually so helpful and not so stressful to listen to. All other videos made me stress more.

Thank you so much. I just got a manual myself. Older car but still same idea and this video helped me a lot. Now if only I could stop doing unintentional burnouts on hills that would be great. :)
    Thank you again! Love it.

Burnouts are better than stalling though!

I didn’t pass the driving test today because of this shit. The car just wouldn’t move forward.

Im pretty sure it must have been the cars fault

It was a combination of poor clutch control + not enough throttle. Stopped stalling as soon as I started paying more attention to the clutch.

Your video is good for those who knows better English.. Person like me can learn when you can give us a demo of car.. Not by explain theoretical but by doing practical also.. Then it will be more helpful to us to..
