As a lifelong Kentucky fan, my initial reaction to this was negative mainly because I was focused on the big names. After sleeping on it and doing research, I'm all in on Pope and how he can build the program around his system.
In Mark Pope's defense, last season he did have BYU playing better defense than we at Kentucky had our team playing.

This has been working out great and these recruits are loving what he has been brining to Kentucky and he hasn’t even coached a game for Kentucky 😂. He’s easily bringing Kentucky to a Elite 8 this season.

You all talk about recruiting battles. This isnt 2015. It's called NIL. UK booster have already donated $4M today alone plus his contract is $3M cheaper than Calipari's contract and about $7M cheaper than what they reported offered Dan Hurley.
Not to mention, Pitino already said if Pope needs more NIL money to win a Nat'l Championship, he'd write a check ! That's pretty telling support coming from his former coach and current coach from another collegiate team .
So you're telling me that there isn't any talented kids not looking at Kentucky right now saying, 🤔 they don't have any players right now? I can go play on the biggest stage for a new Coach that runs an elite offensive system. You would be crazy. I'm sure Mark pope won't have trouble getting good players.. Cal as good of a recruiter he was, he wasn't landing elite classes back to back to back until he got to Kentucky. He got some good classes at Memphis, a good class here or there, a few good players at Memphis, but wasn't until Kentucky when he started really recruiting at an elite level. Kentucky been putting players in the league before Calipari. Yeah Calipari boosted it, but KY been putting kids in the league
Calipari was getting top-end talent all the way back in his UMASS days. He has ALWAYS been known as an elite recruiter.
Mark's pedigree is insane. He's a Rhodes Scholarship finalist, has like a 160 IQ. So Mensa brain, the work ethic of a journeyman NBA enforcer for the better part of a decade, Captain of the Best team in modern College Basketball history. He played for or worked with off the top of my coaches such as Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan, Larry Bird, Mark Malone, Michael Malone, George Karl, Mark Fox, Dave Rose. The way the Kentucky boosters, former players, adminastration is rallying around him is insane and he going to absolutely be a coach superstar at UK.

11:57 you’ve regurgitated an incorrect stat, unless you don’t consider Marcus Adams Jr a legitimate 4-star player. I’d concede if so. He did only play 8 minutes last year and is now transferring to his 4th school in 1 year’s time. But still a 4-star coming to BYU when signed. Larger point is still valid, but at least spew accurate facts.
Mark Pope overachieved at BYU, with no 5 star recruits and has the same record as Coach Cal with 10) 5 star recruits. He’s a better X’s & O’s coach than Cal.
Also coached with almost no expectations and no pressure.
I’m a incoming Kentucky student and I don’t understand the hate for Mark Pope. He might not have been my top choice but I don’t dislike the hire. He literally took BYU a program that only recruits mormons on their team and he took them to the tournament as a 6 seed in the big 12 which also included a win at Allen fieldhouse which is one of the toughest places to win in college basketball. If he can do that with that BYU roster, he can do well at Kentucky. Kentucky might not do really great next season but if you give him time I think he’ll do really well

BYU won that game at Kansas without Kevin McCullar playing. We saw how good Kansas was without McCullar(not really that good). So, that isn't as impressive of a victory as you make it out to be. I agree with the rest of your points though.
They DO NOT strictly recruit Mormons. Stop saying this. It’s factually incorrect. There are plenty of non-Mormon student athletes at BYU.

Hmmm...Pope is a top recruiter in the portal. Three top 5 portal classes in five years. Hurley does the same. He doesn't recruit lots of "neon" freshmen. UCONN has bad freshmen classes.
Mark pope is a damn good hire IMO.. he took BYU and competed in the big 12 while having recruiting restrictions due to Mormon beliefs ect, you pair him with his coaching ability and NIL to get some good players I think this will work out. I don't give a sh about the aurora of the coach, can the man coach? That's it. If they land good players, within this system which is UConn style offensively, they shoot alot of 3s, they are fundamentally sound..he finished higher in kenpom than Calipari did at Kentucky last year. 🤷
Dude BYU accepts non-mormons. Idk why everyone keeps acting like you have to be Mormon to play basketball (or any sport) at BYU.
@@poopoomangione I'm just going off what I heard from CBS sports writers. BYU is a Mormon school, and kids had to sign paperwork to not have sex, drink, and other things. Plus it just being a Mormon school would kind of make it hard to attract alot of top talent in the country. I mean come on, lol

10 yrs coaching experience 0 tournament wins and he’s lost x2 to double digit seeds as the favorite and ur AD makes him the 5th highest paid coach in Cbb with a 5yr contract u guys believe in this AD wasn’t he the same one who wanted Billy Gilispe u can see he has a great eye for talent.
@@B-Eazy999 thank you. Mitch needs to go. Nobody knows if this hire will work out or not but what is known is that mark pope would have took this job after going through 20 more qualified coaches. You don’t talk too two coaches and then go directly to your last pick.
He will have admin support that Cal hasn't had for a couple of years. If there is a way to build a roster they will, Reed will stay. They will up the NIL to retain recruits. He will get the roster and will be on him to grow them.
I think Carter is completely wroong about Mark lacking the dawg in him. He is uber-competitive when the clock is ticking. He never backed down to guys like Antoine Walker at UK. He had the respect of guys like Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen in the NBA. He guarded the hell out of Tim Duncan in the E8, Marcus Camby in the F4, and Ben Wallace in the National Championship game. Yeah they put up numbers and he got alot of help from Walker and McCarty double teams but he made them go thru him not over and around.
Mark pope has a history of winning at a program that won’t allow their student athletes to enjoy the real college experience… drinking, women,etc… let him recruit Kentucky talent and he will win tournament games… I love cal, but we were heading into next season with the same game plan as what’s failed him since the COVID year has been granted… Arkansas basketball will be a monster in the SEC, but we also saw new coaches cook Kentucky and cal this year in close game coaching… and we don’t want group after group of one and dones. Cal built a culture that even 3-4 year guys were one and done via transfer. The rosters had zero continuity and it started biting him in the ass more than it worked.
Playing in the BIG12 is not anything like playing in the SEC

My buggiest issue with mark pope is he once told Matt haarms that Purdue and Matt painter didn’t know how to coach big guys and he would unlock Matt haarms. Turned out mark pope is a lier

Yeah it would be had they not been mentored for the job and both had been coaching 10+ yrs previously and didn’t have a single tournament win , here’s a better one them 2 coaches combined have less coaching experience than Pope and 10x the tournament wins

Y'all can't compare Mark p to fran McCaffery or brad underwood, the man hasn't been coaching that long, Kentucky could be getting a coach that is about to reach his prime and start getting those wins yall say he is lacking. Thats like being a rookie in the league, of course as a rookie im not gonna have all these accomplishments these other guys do, give the man a chance. I think he could do alot better than people think. Fk drake and all that BS. Cal done his due diligence, he was a hell of a man and coach earlier in his tenure, now not so much. He is on the back end of his career, he is basically another tom izzo or bob Huggins. Id rather risk it with a guy that actually wants to work for the program and win, somebody who understands what it means to put on that uniform and somebody who instills culture. Thats something cal never has done. He has never built solid culture, because his players aren't around long enough,. He was running a college level AAU program using Kentuckys resources and facilities. He will do the same thing at Arkansas, with less impressive facilities. As i go back and watch BYU games, i see a team that is well coached, can actually guard ball screens, an utilize that same Rick Pitino style of basketball. This literally could turn out to he a Homerun hire.

It’s been great and UK hasn’t had this much support from not only fans in seats but donors. He’s been coaching for a lower program and has just brought arguably the best constructed roster anyone could bring into a program.

What did Billy Donavon do at Marshall before he went to Florida and then how many years did it take him to find real success at U of F ? It took Scott Drew almost 20 years to win a Nat'l Championship at Baylor . It took Jay Wright 11 years to get his first NCAA tournament win . So STFU cause you guys dont have a clue .

The legacy stuff is crazy because they ran with tubby Smith and Gillespie for a chunk after pitino left them, and before pitino they had Eddie Sutton and joe b hall?! Yikes man...the best coach they've ever had, Cal, got run out of town..this is not a good program
Don't disrespect Joe B. Hall. He's one of the top 5 coaches in Kentucky history. We've won championships with 3 coaches in my lifetime. Pitino, Tubby and Calipari. Pitino would have had more championships at Kentucky than Cal, but only coached here 8 years. 2 of the 8 were a waste because of the Eddie Sutton mess before he got there. It caused Pitino's first 2 years to be under a postseason ban. If Pitino had stayed though, he may have had 3 or 4 championships himself. We're not a bad program. We have the 2nd most championships. Sure, it's been going on 13 years since the last one but a lot of that is due to Calipari not keeping up with the changes in modern basketball until this past season when it was too late. He had already upset the AD and fans with his stubbornness.

He was a prototype Cal because he had tons of talent in the lat 70s and early 80s but only one Final Four to show for it smh... i might have been a little harsh in my assessment of the eprogram overall, so my bad, but ya'll really are oveerrated
