One of my favourite things to see is people just going into it and with the first 5 tracks just thinking this is going to be a smooth album, but once you hit the end of "These Walls" it all just starts falling down into it's right place and it perfectly balances the pessimism and the optimism that constantly penetrates his mind as a black man and some of it is just tragic and the rest is some of the most hopefull songs of all time and this contrast just makes the album go to another level. Generally, the walls represent things that imprison Kendrick (aka the caterpillar in the cocoon,) such as sex - “these ‘walls’ (vagina) want to cry tears.” Prison walls, money, fame, etc. The prison of institutionalization and American commercialism leads to the self-hatred and suicidal feelings demonstrated in “u.” This in turn prompts a self-exploration of faith, family, and culture/history that makes up the rest of the album.

The funny thing is King Kunta dropped before Drake was exposed for the ghostwriting. Which is why Kendrick says "I swore I wouldn't tell", implying he knew Drake had hidden writers and wanted to speak on it, but was deliberately leaving his name out of it.
@@denrico777Eminem tested Kendrick by kicking out all of his entourage to see if Kendrick actually writes. You can't say every popular rapper has Ghostwriters as run the risk of being exposed. You can absolutely tell who writes and who doesn't. It isn't hard.
The Drake beef made a lot of people listen. I see comments under Mother I Sober saying they came from the beef and it made then cry. They will understand why we call him the GOAT
@@3bladeninja21I still can’t listen to that song without crying. To this day. Every time. I can admit that TPAB is maybe from an objective standpoint, his best album. But man nothing affects me the same way Mr Morale does
I’m so jealous of you rn man this is my favorite album. Imagine hearing this as an 15 year old overthinking black kid from LA though 😅shit shaped me man
Im an overthinking black man, I was 32 when this came out. It was my first intro to Kendrick. I was forever a fan after this. Even though im older im happy for all the young black men that get to grow up listening to his music and getting his message.
The yams thing is a reference the 1958 book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, its one of the most proflific and important pieces of african literature, really really amazing book about the african perspective on the colonization of africa by the british, in the book farming yams is a major part of the social structure in pre-colonial african culture and was a big symbol of masculinity and power. I highly recomend the book its super good, makes you appreciate that line so much more too when you really understand how deep in goes, theres big parralels to be drawn between what kendrick is talking about in this album and the story of Okonkwo from the book. also "Lucy" is both lucifer and also lucian grainge, the CEO of UMG and most powerful person in control of the music industry in terms of record labels etc. also the version of I on this album is actually a live recording where a fight broke out in the audience that kendrick decided was better than the actual album track version.
Didn’t know about Lucian Grainge! The more time goes on the more I realize that no matter how much I’m in the Reddit sub, how much I look at every Genius reference, how many articles I read, how many videos I watch…there will always be layers Dot put in that I have yet to realize
You just made me cry. I'm watching this, bottle feeding a baby kitty. Remembering the first time I heard this and seeing you truly feel this got me nostalgic. So glad people are doubling back on his back catologue.
Also, these walls, is about a man killing his friend, and he sleeping with his baby momma on purpose after he got famous. "That sentence so important" Her walls, and the prison walls.
The album that Cole and Drake said people gassed up. Is the same album nothing in their catalog can hold a candle to.

Wowww
I think drake has had ghostwriter accusations way before 2015
@@Rose-ew7bvyeah but so has just about every popular rapper. I feel like them reference tracks is what solidified it.
and remember these songs are made at least a year before release.
@@denrico777Eminem tested Kendrick by kicking out all of his entourage to see if Kendrick actually writes. You can't say every popular rapper has Ghostwriters as run the risk of being exposed. You can absolutely tell who writes and who doesn't. It isn't hard.
I love watching people experience Kendrick albums for the first time. Hope you get to listen to them all. They build on each other.
This is truly an experience.🥹❤️
The Drake beef made a lot of people listen. I see comments under Mother I Sober saying they came from the beef and it made then cry. They will understand why we call him the GOAT
Same same
@@3bladeninja21I still can’t listen to that song without crying. To this day. Every time. I can admit that TPAB is maybe from an objective standpoint, his best album. But man nothing affects me the same way Mr Morale does
@@3bladeninja21they are listening to the old stuff and realize that he is a great rapper

I’m so jealous of you rn man this is my favorite album. Imagine hearing this as an 15 year old overthinking black kid from LA though 😅shit shaped me man
I know this HIT when it came out😂
i was a 15 year old overthinking kid growing up in south miami when this came out i truly feel you brother😂💯
Crazy. I’m from south Miami then moved at 18 to la right when GKMC came out. Def changed me 😂
Im an overthinking black man, I was 32 when this came out. It was my first intro to Kendrick. I was forever a fan after this. Even though im older im happy for all the young black men that get to grow up listening to his music and getting his message.
I was an overthinking 16 year old white Canadian when this came out and it still hit, he's just the goat man 🐐🐐🐐
Drake thought he could outrap a man that made a diss track to himself in the song U. 😂
THIS!!!!!!!👆👆👆👆
didn’t drake like do the same on taylor made 😭
@@OzdestroKendrick disses himself to explore complex narratives about his own mind. Drake just disses himself on accident because he's a dumbass 😂
@@OzdestroHe failed.

Rapsody is mad underrated. Her album Eve is FIRE and no one ever reacts to it. Best female rapper out.
Bet adding that to the list!
@@Breadhead13also listen to her album Laila’s wisdom
Please don’t cry just came out!!! Its so good i think its her best

You need more views, you understand why Drake lost now
i do... I do..
This my type of shit, people who loves music enough to go ham and dig in the crafts, this man is a vibe bigquint where ya at 😂😂
The yams thing is a reference the 1958 book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, its one of the most proflific and important pieces of african literature, really really amazing book about the african perspective on the colonization of africa by the british, in the book farming yams is a major part of the social structure in pre-colonial african culture and was a big symbol of masculinity and power.
Things Fall Apart and Arrow of God are 2 of my favorite books.
THANK YOU!
I thought so. Wow. He got tired of the industry
I never got the Lucian Grainge part of that. Holy shit
Didn’t know about Lucian Grainge! The more time goes on the more I realize that no matter how much I’m in the Reddit sub, how much I look at every Genius reference, how many articles I read, how many videos I watch…there will always be layers Dot put in that I have yet to realize
This album aged like fine wine 🍷
YESSS
You just made me cry. I'm watching this, bottle feeding a baby kitty. Remembering the first time I heard this and seeing you truly feel this got me nostalgic. So glad people are doubling back on his back catologue.
wow. thats amazing
this brought a tear to my face
Same. Def remembering my first time listening watching your reaction. U is a powerful song and you understood.
That's y Drake could never‼️

Also, these walls, is about a man killing his friend, and he sleeping with his baby momma on purpose after he got famous. "That sentence so important" Her walls, and the prison walls.

that's completely wrong
these walls is about kendrick sleeping with the baby momma of the man who killed one of kendrick's homies

Idk if you picked up on it by the end of Mortal Man but he was “interviewing” 2Pac.
It’s actually an interview from 1994.
I figured out after the recording! Thank you for telling me 😌
