Hi Dean, I have done dis mistake for my E61😢,how can I solve all the problems I am getting. Mainly air bag lights on dash? Do I need to replace main air bag control module, or main ECU to? 😢
Excellent video 👍🏽 I’ve just put my E93 330i in the garage for winter and wasn’t sure how to charge it with my battery maintainer or if I was ok to use the connections under the bonnet! This answers everything I particularly like the part to lock the car as I would have left it unlocked what a top tip! Thank you!! 👍🏽
Don't remove the battery for charging, charge it on the car. When replacing the battery always keep 12 volts DC on the under bonnet charge point until the replacement is complete, easy.
Look for Deltran connectors on trickle chargers. It's easy to find accessories for Deltran connectors. I have a 25ft. extension cable for trickle charging cars in my driveway. I have installed the hard wire charging cable on all my car batteries since covid. With BMWs, except SUVs, it's easy since the battery is in the trunk/boot.
I thought you crossed the cables on your m5 e 60 after watching that video i crossed them cables on my 2006 e60 and replaced the battery now i have a no crank no start i am working on now and cannot get car into Ignition position 2 , any ideas ????
Hi there I have a bmw f40 128 ti I don’t use my car during the week with my golf gti I put a solar panel charger on my car to keep it charged can I use this on my new bmw thank you mike
I have a 2007 BMW Z4 3.0si roadster. The car suddently would not heat and the BMW mechanic explained I need a new battery. Due to the registration of the battery (can buy tool to do yourself) but agreed to pay 450 dollars for the new battery plus registration. A few weeks later, the car continued to deplete the battery. I took it back and the charged the battery and it worked okay for about a month. I drive the z4 maybe once or twice a week but for short distances to the grocery store. The battery kept dying on a regular basis and the jump starter I purchased did not effectively start it. I used my Honda Accord to jump start from the front of the car and would then drive the BMW for an hour or more but the battery kept depleting after a few days. I purchased a battery charger and battery restorer (same device) for about 35 dollars. I hooked it up to the front of the engine but it said the battery was good. I took the chance and took the battery out and trickle charged or restored the batter from Fri to Sunday. Since that time, the battery has done well. I have spend days not driving the car and it starts up. I learned that if the battery is registered you don't need to register the battery: and yes, as this video states, you can take the battery out of the car for a 2007 and charge the battery. I had not fault codes when I put the battery back in the car. Of course, put the postive on first and then the negative. So far, car battery is working so much better and not having to jump start it every week. WIsh I had seen your video earlier as I didn't know if you could take the battery out (so yes, thank you as I live on the 3rd floor in Dallas and have no garage to charge it other ways). Taking the battery out and charging it made the car work right again.
beware that letting the battery state of charge to go too low causes irreversible loss of capacity, also below 0% (basically the lowest acceptable level, 12V rest voltage) is much worse. it depends how long it stays there. best life is if you keep it fully charged I have an universal charger and a 20 Ah deep cycle battery to charge the car if it sits for too long especially in the winter. you also need to monitor the voltage regularly I’ve also used a 20w solar panel, which works well, but if you use a solar module, it will probably draw more current than the panel is producing, therefore I have a check diode in series to prevent discharge over night and two 14V zenner diodes across so the battery isn’t going to get overcharged.
Its the IBS, Intelligent battery senor... I unplugged it now my battery chargers at around a steady 14.5 v. I got the airbag and searbet light on now because of but i dont give no fcks.. the battery now charges
Very thorough video. I've only charged my battery using the procedure you show. Works very well. I hadn't heard about locking the car to put everything to sleep while charging. I've fully charged my battery without locking the car in the past. However, I'll try locking it when I next need to recharge and see if that might improve the speed of fully recharging. Also when using these modern chargers to "repair/desulphate" a battery I disconnected the battery from the car and charged it directly as I had read that the repair modes pulse high current into the battery to do the "repair" and these high pulses might damage some modules in the car if done using the terminals under the bonnet. Is this correct? ( I use a 10 amp battery charger). Thanks
The eyelets get connected permanently on the battery and when using the charger you just need to connect the other end to the two pin connector to the charger.
Nice one Dr 🙂 Thanks for giving the lowdown on how to do something that should be really simple, and to be frank BMW should tell you how to manage this. I called them up once to ask about it because I lived in a flat at the time and they told me no you cannot take the battery out or you may damage the electronics and chips in the engine when you re-install the battery. Nice to know that's not the situation. And don't forget people, if you remove your battery be sure you can get the boot lid open again as with no battery your locks will not open on power, so you need to be able to access the boot space and get to the manual release or block the lock from locking on the boot when you close it.
Were you a mechanic before you started youtube or was it all self-taught? Either way good to see you back. I've got an R53 for fun and am getting everything overhauled on it as we speak, then looking to get a 3 series with the N52 engine to use my daily. :)
I was indeed ! I was mechanic then a technician for 8 years until I proceeded on my own. I still do jobs for garages all over when I’m needed, as most of there guys ain’t skilled in the electronics department for BMW so I been doing a lot for them in the last year. Due to the weather we had in the Uk the high heat overheated more DME in BMWS then I have ever seen. So I been busy and still do the odd stuff and take cars for them to repair if they are in over their head.

Thanks a lot my friend 😅 yeah man I’m enjoying it so much my mrs don’t even see me 😅 I mean it’s so far down from my house I had to get a car to ge them to drive down to me but yeah I’m always in there even my kids know where I am all the time. Always stuff to do for me in there at least
Hi Doc.... thanks heaps for your videos... I have used them for many repairs... I have an unusual problem... I live on the Gold Coast in Queensland.... just recently, if I leave the car outside on a hot day I have no crank... but go to start it when the day cools down.... bingo, start beautify, and runs lovely, I have purposely left it out when it's hot in the sun and if won't crank... Doc... what's your take on this... kind regards John.
Thank you for sharing. I never knew about locking the car while charging;lesson learned for today. You always produce excellent video, keep up the good work!
nice one. im just stuck cos ive had this issue for over a year. If i open and close my car door once ot twice after hours of it being sat still and then return to it later my car will not start unless i charge up the battery. It might turn the engine over a few times but it will drain the battery and wont even give me a 2nd try. If im away and don't open the car doors for over 2 days, even when it was -3 Degree outside my car started fine. What could be draining my battery so much when i just open and close the door really quickly when the car is sleeping. And does this mean i just need to replace a battery or i have an actual critical parasitic leak ?
Thanks for all the info! Gotta tell you though, ...I think your voice is steady and calm, some might say even soothing... but, it's so monotone and same paced, I start to zone out and think of others things, or it puts me to sleep. Maybe not enough pause between points you are making... maybe some emphasis on certain important points, and maybe don't repeat the same thing too many times. Just some feedback. Keep up the great work!
2:30 are you saving the battery leads once disconnected from the battery still have a charge on them...from what? Maybe put a DMM across the leads to test.
Dr. B, 1st thanks for the many videos that helps a lot of us with our BMW's. Now, what's going on with the 3.0L turbo engines that are now locking up at very low miles? At 92k miles and 2 days right after a service, the engine quits on the highway at 65mph. .. goes into limp mode and was able to coast to median. Now BMW state engine locked up but I'm like WHY? They make many assumptions that makes no sense! Any info is appreciated, fighting for a new engine!
Hi Dean, great content, keep it up👍.I would like to ask you about locking the e60 and the issue that car is going to sleep mode... In the normal daily drive when i drive and then stop somewhere for few hours is it necessary also always lock the car or i can let him unlocked during the day ? Does he draining the batery always when is unlocked? Excellent video😀
Great advise DR! Can you help me with something on my E60? I had my IBS sensor replaced at my local shop, and since then both my key fobs stopped working, how can i get them to work again? I have tried locking the car from inside and pressing the unlock button down while pressing BMW logo for 3 times, but none of the key fobs get to work.
Hello. I have a Bmw E60 m57 231 Hp and i have a straige noise when I accelerate the first 5 minutes. After 5 minutes the car runs perfectly whitout any problems. I think it is the turbo but i checked it and it looks good, no oil leak the axel is stiff. The timing chain was changed, the noise is excluded from the engine. A friend of mine says it can be the gasket between the engine and admision where the turbo is mounted and when it gets hot it seels better because rhe metal is dilated. Sorry for my english.😁
Another cracking vid Dean! Glad to see you back and hope you're well. I'll be getting one of these for sure .. I nearly made the big mistake of charging it via the actual battery in the boot! So thank you for saving me from that!! Quick question please - will it work with my E88? And where under the bonnet is my point? Thank you :)
My car just didn't want to start a few days ago still haven't started. Bmw E60 520i 08 I put a charger on in the engine bay with starter function on it, didn't help. I tried to put more ground to the engine with cables, i put the battery on charge over night but then in the trunk with the car locked. Battery wasn't good. Got it changed for a new one that i charged in house. No difference still won't start everything else works ignition and fan and cluster nothing different except that it won't crank. I had no issues before and one morning it just didn't start. No fault messages accept that if i check the cas module with inpa i get a memory that the engine didn't start. I will toe the car to a workshop and check all grounds and the starter. Can it be some fault with the relays in the trunk? The 30 and 15 ones? The 30 relay is not warm. After seeing this video I'm afraid that i have ruined alot of electronics 😐 Best regards from Sweden
Hi dean I have a 2014 518d the only problem I have is that when the back or passenger doors are open the remote not in reach comes up on the dash screen this doesn’t happens with the drivers door any idea what this problem is thanks
I've charged the battery from the front and back before without issues. I've seen the BMW documents saying to charge from the front only because the car won't be able to determine the state of charge properly if you are charging it from the back. My personal experience has been different, charging from the back has never caused an issue on my cars.
I will say right now! BMW don’t state that for nothing and what I will say is you will get lucky but the 100th time you attempt to do that will be the time the car catches you out and destroys your car. I will also say charging via the battery area will majorly decrease the life of the battery quickly as it’s not regulated properly and charged properly.
If you do not know then there is no point me explaining myself time and time again like a parrot. I have explained this same thing many times In many different videos as to why.
@@BMWDoctor A battery just converts electrical energy into chemical energy. There is a trade off between a higher state of charge and lower state of charge. The state of charge is assumed by knowing the size of the battery (in Amp hours), type of battery used (AGM or lead acid) and by monitoring the voltage. Lead acid batteries will create hydrogen gas which is why you don't want sparks near the batter. AGM batteries don't gas. As far as I am concerned, there is no difference between applying current from the front or at the battery. Everything is wired parallel and experiences the same voltage. ISTA makes a point to tell the technician to hook up their equipment to the front to keep the electrical system on. This is definitely the "right way" to do it if you're interested in preventing issues with the battery not fully charging while driving.
There is a big difference as the way BMW have the battery power designed is not to go through the battery to the car. I worked for BMW for many many many years and in fact, do you know how many people they got rid of in 8 years for even trying to attempt to jump start or power a BMW from the rear ? Do you know how many people do this same thing for bad advise giving with little to no care and end up in a bad situation? If I showed you all the comments I get daily from people doing this from the rear and then they plead for my help as they messed up it would shock you. Just because one person got away with it does not mean the other ten will. I can almost assure you if you worked at BMW and you even attempted to jump the car from the back terminals not only would you be sacked on the spot they would also sue you for damages to whatever came up during the outcome of that. This isn’t a joke and I’m not your average DIY guy here I’m explaining what I know what I see on a daily basis I don’t just do my own cars I travel the country repairing peoples ‘mistakes’ with these cars. Don’t let me just tell you that that’s what has been keeping me in the buisness long enough and mostly you find garages with little to no experience in BMW who make the most mistakes who have never worked on one of the cars and just jump it the way you would any other car. But then that’s why I’m not on TH-cam pleading for someone’s help for doing the wrong thing and Instead I’m saving people constantly from making that mistake I mean in my time of owning cars you probably seen I don’t have not even A QUARTER of the issues most have with these cars. Which should explain ALOT with experience and knowledge and people who think they know correctly.
Hi,Doctor! I have a e92 lci with a few electrical problema that nobody until now didn t fix it. When I put the key into the ignition and start the car,the doors unlock and lock like crazy, same the windows go down and up,like u ar opening and closing the doors.Another problem is that sometimes when I put the ignition on,it automatically switches off. And another weird thing is sometimes I unlock the car and suddenly it lock s back.Any idea what can be? Tks!
Besides the BMW software computer INPA is there any other scant tool that registers a battery I know they say they can't I have the Fox well nt 530 it says it can but it can't
I do it sometimes not much anymore to be honest as I don’t have time and don’t really need too. I’m mostly out on call outs having to recover vehicles and do a lot of other stuff with garages and keys lost. So don’t really need to be doing that anymore if I’m honest
@@BMWDoctor oh okay I completely understand, I was just having trouble with CF17 code 08 328xi, communication between the two module transmission shifting weird, I figured it out eventually for anybody else that reads this can help out
Thanks for that and WOW the price has gone down ? They was £149.99 this must be the best charger on the market for that price and let me say it out performs my CTEK and has many many other useful options compared to that. So what a bargain for that price. And I can say I never seen one fuse protected so that is a must and a nice protection feature espeically on BMW. It’s a must have! I been using it for over a month now and it charged all my cars up without issue
Hey Dean quick question. What should I do for an "increase battery discharge" and hearing a clicking sound in all the doors? It's for a 2013 750li.....
Your door handles are toast. Common problem on that car with comfort access the ticking is the signal for wake up on your door handles. Unfortunately they fail causing the car to stay awake and not read when to go to sleep causing your battery drain. My best advise would be code it out and be done with as replacing one handle will lead to replacing them all as it’s a common failure.
These chargers be it a CTEK, NOCO or Topdon are all carbon copies of each other. As for Repair aka Recondition or Desulfate, forget about that feature. If a battery has been severely discharged for several months, you are never going to bring it back.
Can’t do that I’m afraid I have a agreement with the song writer and producer. If I did remove it it would be another song just like this as this is what I’m into. Love it or hate it it won’t change ever. It’s over all my videos and will always be.
what brand battery are you using?..have you heard of the "antigravity" batteries that are supposed to be able to jump-start themselves?(not sure if they're available everywhere)
Nope never heard of them but I will look this up as this sounds intresting although, It would have to be tried and tested on bmw before I bought it and I doubt BMW would ever reccomend them.
They might be. I had an E36 coupe. Nice car but it was my summer car. As for a daily driver in our climate, I trust a Toyota, Lexus, Honda or Acura. I passed on a Macan, even though I have two 911s.
If your battery charger is good enough you won’t have a problem. Cheap Chinese crap no, you need to spend and charge from the engine. Top don are pretty good, Noco as well the more money you spend the better. Most of the stuff is just a rebrand just get the best you can afford. Ctec are decent as well probably the most well known.
I have a 2011 BMW 328i I need to drain my battery to reset my computer can I do it with this year BMW-- can I put the two battery post together touching ?

I've seen the BMW documents saying to charge from the front only because the car won't be able to determine the state of charge properly if you are charging it from the back. My personal experience has been different, charging from the back has never caused an issue on my cars.
I will say right now! BMW don’t state that for nothing and what I will say is you will get lucky but the 100th time you attempt to do that will be the time the car catches you out and destroys your car. I will also say charging via the battery area will majorly decrease the life of the battery quickly as it’s not regulated properly and charged properly.
@@BMWDoctor how is it not “regulated” the charger has voltage and current control not the car
Tks!
and can i reset my check engine light by touching the two terminals
Besides the BMW software computer INPA is there any other scant tool that registers a battery I know they say they can't I have the Fox well nt 530 it says it can but it can't
Jheezze bro don’t talk to me about scan tools 😅 just wait for my videos coming out regarding that
Hi Doc got a airbag come up on the dash can you tell me how to clear that emblem
Thank you, but you gotta laugh… ‘Well worth the money, but I don’t know how much this one cost’. 😂
This happened to my car the battery was disconnected the opposite way now I have completely blank I drive and no door chimes or seatbelt noise .
Another great video bro like always, 👍🔥, do you still do remote diagnostics? If so how can contact
I do it sometimes not much anymore to be honest as I don’t have time and don’t really need too. I’m mostly out on call outs having to recover vehicles and do a lot of other stuff with garages and keys lost. So don’t really need to be doing that anymore if I’m honest
@@BMWDoctor oh okay I completely understand, I was just having trouble with CF17 code 08 328xi, communication between the two module transmission shifting weird, I figured it out eventually for anybody else that reads this can help out
i have a 05 325 ci and it ideals up and down then shuts off what can it be
Would this jump start car or do u need different charger. What’s repair mode for ?
Repair mode is bassically recondition mode so you can repair or whats also known as recondition the battery in the event of it not holding charge.
Thanks for posting videos again!
No problem too many to go out 😅
Hello mate i got bmw 325i coupe and my car is jerking when i start my car leave it for while and while stop on traffic light
Forgive my lack of knowledge, but I thought E60 battery located on the right side of the trunk?
It is but this is a M5 so it’s located in the middle of the rear of the car. Weight distribution
@@BMWDoctor Thanks..
Yo bro my 530i xi 06 cluster light won’t turn on but car starts fine i need help Asap i was Thinking a fuse is bad ? Any suggestions??
just ordered one from amazon. 54.18. not a bad price. cheers.
My bmw 538i was operating fine. Now it will not make a sound. The lights will come on when I push the engine start button
Your videos have come a long way. I think it's time though to refresh the outdated gangster intro.
Is great info thanks again
No problem
Gad to see you bmw God
I wish I never owned a BMW. The worst car I ever had.
Because of all the stupid shit with a bmw is y I sold mine. Damn headache more than I enjoyed driving it!
They might be. I had an E36 coupe. Nice car but it was my summer car. As for a daily driver in our climate, I trust a Toyota, Lexus, Honda or Acura. I passed on a Macan, even though I have two 911s.
I have to say, my four BMW motorcycles are tops. I bought into them since 1991.
BMW'S are total rubbish would never buy another far to many electronic components
Good to see you back Dean, was wondering where and how you had been, great video and thanks for sharing
I have airbag and seatbelt lights on dashboard. Annoying
I have a 2011 BMW 328i I need to drain my battery to reset my computer can I do it with this year BMW-- can I put the two battery post together touching ?
👍👍👍👍
