    What's ironic is that pressed tin was the drop ceiling of it's day. It was an cheaper alternative to hiring someone with the skills to do patterns like it in plaster.

    I work at an architecture firm and I've learned that a firm can design a beautiful remodel or addition or whatever of a historic building, and everything gets approved, and that's when plans go out the window, because either general contractors, or clients, or whoever, start to cut things from the design that they don't see as necessary, or to save money, and that beautiful design turns into this. It makes our work a lot more complicated and difficult. I find that it's less an issue of modernization and more an issue of money, because when done right, a historic building can turn out beautifully. 😔

      It’s going to take a lot longer then you think to get Detroit back to what it once was. I lived in one of the oldest parts of the entire Country and even still that particular city is far off from what it once was. It takes a lot more than money to clean up a community and rebuild literally everything.

    So the arched ceiling you guys were asking about how its supported is that the majority of the weight is held up by another larger arch that crosses the whole room. And the ceiling that you see from inside is held by beams but has a lot less of a load because its only holding the decorative internal layer that you can see.
    In Europe Gothic cathedrals and large buildings have the larger arch external to the building and theyre called flying buttresses and they do the same thing I think.

    That room with the pressed tin that has the 70s paneling may go back further than that. My parents bought their brand-new house in Huntington Beach California in 1965. The light fixture in your room has a ball that holds electrical cording. We had a similar type of fixture in our kitchen. It can pull down and be raised up depending on how close you need the light.

      Often, the lead content is significantly higher than "microscopic." I've literally been inside organs where the pipes collapsed under their own weight because the lead content in the alloy was too high. You can go ahead and put lips on these if you want, and they're probably safe in this one instance because these were wooden pipes with a toe cap, but I've seen them blowing on the high lead pipes before in past videos and don't really want to see them get hurt.

  • @kyousouka
    @kyousouka ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Regarding the arches at 16:10, I suspect it's set up similarly to hammerbeam roofs. The weight of the arch sits on a short beam, which in turn is supported by a half-arch or diagonal brace, which is why the wall underneath is also curved. This all serves to transfer the force to the wall. Much of the force on the legs of an arch is outward (as opposed to downward) already, so the downward forces on the horizontal hammerbeams aren't as great as you might think. Incidentally, this outward force is why buttresses, flying or otherwise, were often needed - they served to counteract the outward force by essentially leaning against the arches and transferring the outward forces downward.
    It's also possible the interior arches are decorative and not load-bearing, and that an external arch that's wider than the internal arch is the actual load-bearing element.

Pretty cool concept. alot of extra work.

    Hey Guys! That was a really interesting explore. I love these old buildings with little or no graffiti. My father used to play a pipe organ. Unfortunately there's not much demand for them anymore so they sit in these places. They are a very powerful instrument when played by someone who knows what they're doing. Many of these old churches are being converted into high end condos in large cities but unfortunately it's very expensive to retain the outer features of the buildings and have them comply with current building codes. Keep up the great work you do. Cheers!

While pipe organs aren’t as common in churches as they once were, (and people who can play them aren’t that plentiful either,) they’re mostly in older churches whose congregations, back in the day, could afford their installation. They are very expensive musical instruments. I have belonged to two different Methodist churches where there are pipe organs. When one of the churches needed to have their organ overhauled and maybe some new or refurbished pipes, (can’t remember exactly,) it cost the church some $200,000 to have the work done. But if you ever want to hear master pipe organists play, there are lots of vids right here on YT.

    Most of the time, drop ceilings are put into old buildings to comply with the latest building codes. Unfortunately this sometimes covers up some really nice old architecture.

    There is the world's largest pipe organ at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. This organ was built in 1932 and until they started restoring parts of it, was 75% abandoned with only one of eight chambers working until 2016. The organ is being brought back to life one chamber at a time with 3 of the chambers back operational. I think you guys would like to see it and maybe you could coordinate a video with the restoration team like you did in your steam engine video.

      No. A tabernacle is where the Eucharist is kept in reserve, usually at the center of the high altar. The box set into the wall at 19:44 is for the reserve of the Holy Oils.

    The intro music always gets the blood flowing. I've been apart of several active shooter and force on force training for my department along with neighboring departments. Abandoned schools, churches and houses are great. We sometimes use paper targets but typically the paper targets are innocent people or hostage's. We try to get enough people to have actual innocent and hostage people plus real bad guys. We all use sim pistols and rifles. Makes it as real as possible when you can get hit as well, or simulate the chaos of a scene.

    I adore old buildings. I live in a small Victorian cottage completely made from red cedar wood. It has big windows, lots of light and excellent ventilation. It is also amazingly insulated and never gets too cold or hot (great for Australia). I will never again live in hollow, claustrophobic homes from the 70's onward. Big windows with only tiny openings. Stuffy. Too cold or too hot. No personality. They are so bad they affect you mentally sucking all hope and happiness out of you. I had to regularly go outside for fresh air and to clear my head. Most likely the lack of ventilation of modern buildings is causing co2 to build up along with letting viruses hang in the air making people sick(er). Old buildings had the right idea.

    They call it the keystone holds the weight pressing down on either side alot of churches from the late 1700s all are supported that way even a lot of buildings built in the late 1800s till 1943 today's there are very few that rely on architecture using key stone hope that help answer your question

      Oh shit so "tabarnak" (Quebec slur) comes from the French "tabernacle" which is this 😮😮😮 We learn something everyday!

    • @camerondedrick4061
      @camerondedrick4061 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It wasn’t the tabernacle. Olea Sanctus is holy oils. Baptisms, Confirmations, and Anointing of the Sick.
