When I went down to the national guard from the active Army I had a warrant officer in my signal unit. I was a 31 Mike at the time and then translated it over to a 31 Fox when I got into the national guard. This was back in the early 90s. We had a warrant officer named Leslie Hightower that had been in the Army for probably ever. And one day in formation it started raining. Now as we all know it doesn't rain in the Army, it rains on the Army. However he looked up into the sky and said "you better cut that out." And it stopped raining. That's how powerful some warrent officers can be. They can give orders to those higher than the President. LOL

That said, all the Warrant Officers I knew in the Army were always technically and tactfully proficient in their jobs. They had supervisory responsibility and were also able to do the hands on work.

Warrant officers are technical experts and the adviser to the commander (0-3 and above). They are a higher rank than the highest enlisted (E-9) . There is very little difference in pay between the commissioned versus warrant officer up to the grade of 0-6. The rank of CW2 is considered an actual commissioned officer and they range in their duties. CW2 is equivalent to CPT (O-3), CW3 is equivalent to Maj (O-4), CW4 is equivalent to Ltc (O-5) and the highest ranking Warrant of CW5 is equivalent to Col (O-6). The highest ranking commissioned officer rank is O-10. They are the gap between the enlisted and commissioned officer. This means the Warrant Officer has both the educational background, and the field experience to proficiently advise the commissioned officer of actual capabilities of a specific task. When you want to get a 'Direct' answer, you ask the Warrant officer. It is our job to provide the most accurate answer to both the enlisted and any commissioned officer....Hooah!

Get them to form a line with enough space that they have to hold their Salute for two or three minutes as you walk past. They will get tired of that after the third or fourth time it happens usually. Then, they will do everything in their power to walk away.

Special Forces Warrant Officers advise commanders on all aspects of special operations and are responsible for the integration of emerging technologies. Warrant officers in the rank of WO1, CW2 and select CW3s serve on a Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alpha (SFOD-A) primarily as the assistant detachment commander and can also serve as the detachment commander (in the absence of a commander) or commander of specialized teams. CW3 through CW5 SF Warrant Officers serve as staff operations warrant officers within the SF group and at higher commands within SF, Army SOF and joint SOF staffs.

What all must understand is becoming a "Warrant Officer" in the United States Army is controlled by the proponent or branch in which you seek to belong. For example should you seek to become a 311A (CID Warrant Officer) the proponent (CID Command) establishes the criteria for selection.
Additionally, there are 4 types of commissioned officers. Flag, Field Grade, Company Grade & Warrant. Army personnel in grades W-1 and W-2 are provided the same protocols as Company Grades (01-O3) and W-3 to W-5 are provided with the same protocols as Field Grades (0-4 to O6). Company Grade and Field Grade Officers out rank Warrants but when it comes to issues like housing, quarters, formal seating arrangements such protocols will be followed.
Company Grade and Field Grades may also apply to become warrant officers but they require proponent and Branch Manager Approval. In some instances they may have to perform duties as an SGT or SSG first so they can demonstrate technical expertise. Yes, Field Grades have obtained branch releases, served as SSG's for one year, applied to become Warrants with the WOCS attendance being credited, attended specific branch WOBC and then pinned WO1 or CW2.
Warrant Officers can serve to age 60 regardless of rank, Field Grade Officers may have no more than 30 years of service.
Warrant Officers when serving as Commanders bear the same responsibilities as Company and Field grades.
The key to remember is the Warrant Officer is a technical expert in a particular field. My chief complaint is the Army wants more E5 and E6 applicants. In the "old days" senior Staff Sergeants to young Master Sergeants were considered, thus the question about experience and technical expertise is sometime called into question with W-1 and young W-2 personnel. Regardless as Warrant Officer you are the Commander's On Hand Consultant and serve as an example to all Soldiers E-1 to O-8.
Best Wishes and success to all.

18 Series (SF) do have Warrant Officers. 11B is one category that does not! Although I've heard they do have WO's that can be attached but have a different MOS.
Interesting note to add: once promoted to CW2 your actually commissioned now aswell and get some more of those benefits

You can go from High School to Flight School, just wanted everyone to know you don't have to be in the Army or sister service to become an Aviation Warrant. Also your a W01 until you make Chief Warrant Officer 2. At WO1, they are addressed as sir or ma'am, or Mr. Or Mrs. I was an inter-service tranfer enlisted in the Navy as a Frocked E-6, Petty Officer 1st class.

At 3:00....you say you can't go join as a warrant officer. True in a sense. You can join with the "street to seat" program. Yes you enlist, but directly after BCT you go to WOCS and then on to flight school. To become an aviation Warrant you can do my this. Street to seat is not for any other branch though.

Before 1983 one could apply for Warrant Officer and go before a board to determine if you have what it takes Technically as well as tactically. After 1983 all candidates had to go through Warrant Officer Certification Course. In my case I went through a six month course at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD that challenged us mentally as well as physically. Then we were given our MOS and bars and sent out to be the Technicians we trained for. Ordnance MOS 913A, Armament Repair Technician.

I'm English (from the UK). I don't understand. In the British Army, the Company- and Regimental Sergeant Majors ARE the Warrant Officers (Class I and II respectively). Having a dedicated "Warrant Officer" rank is alien to me. How does it work? For context, I'll explain my understanding of how it works here.
The thing is, "Sergeant Major" is a designation, but it's treated as a rank, even though the official rank is WO.
In the British Army, the common section commander (IC) is Sergeant. I think you get the picture, it's pretty self-explanatory: they're also in charge of section discipline and well-being, etc.
In infantry regiments, the next rank is Colour Sergeant (think Staff Sergeant). As a senior NCO, they're still "Sergeants", and therefore are also section commanders, but also have "Staff" duties on the company level (historically, the Colour Sergeant was the NCO in charge of bearing the regimental colours (standard) to indicate their unit). They're considered the deputy to the (Company) Sergeant Major, and are often in charge of issuing kit.
The next rank is [Company] Sergeant Major (WO2). They are still considered senior NCOs, and therefore - as they have "Sergeant" in their appointment - they're also a section commander (as far as I understand). Their designation as SM places them in command of the entire company (like a Major as the company commander / Officer Commanding). They're responsible for stores management (not procurement - that's for the Captain with the authorisation of the Major) and are in charge of discipline and drill.
The highest NCO rank is Regimental Sergeant Major (WO1) who doubles up as the principle non-commissioned tactical commander to the company commander (Major: the Captain in the British Army is the staff officer and deputy for the coy cmdr, and is in charge of training, discipline and supplies as a commissioned officer).
The (Second) Lieutenant is the commissioned officer in charge of an individual platoon/troop. They represent the company commander, albeit at the platoon-level. They manage the training/exercises on the platoon level, but a superior may instruct them to set a particular topic for certain days, etc.
The Captain was historically the company commander, but now lives on as a staff officer for / deputy to the company commander. They're in charge of training, discipline and supplies.
The Major is the principle commanding officer for the company. If he hears something from the soldiers, it's usually cus someone needs to be kicked out.

Company Sergeant Major (CSM) is WO2 (Warrant Officer Class 2). Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) holds the rank of WO1 (Warrant Officer Class 1) but is in fact an appointment.

Hey Matt I just want to clear something up. I am currently in process of my packet for warrant. I have been in the Army for some time and have started the process before early in my career. You can actually go warrant much earlier. Yes you have to enlist first but you can go from basic to warrant. one of the easiest ways is to go into flight and have a feeder MOS like 88M. I know this because my primary is 88M. You can also be an E4 promotable to status and apply with waiver. If you look at the fine print the no waiver clause applies to active duty and not gaurd and reserve. I just wanted to put this out there. The warrant process can be a bit of a black hole of info.

Recruiter: you will need to have college to fly helicopters, I can get you in fixing helicopters but not flying. So I backed away from the army. A year later I met up with a lieutenant in the army that told me if I get my helicopters private license in the civilian world the army willing take me as a warrant officer. So I started taking lessons, four lessons took a year and I got discouraged. I wish now I never give up taking lessons to get my pilots license for helicopter.

Talk to chief for the actual how to and not someone who hasn't been through the experience. Don't, and you will find yourself as one of three cases: burning bridges before you begin, a mediocre warrant that won't progress, or a non-select. You control your career. Use your resources and find me if you want the real "how to"; or not, the choice is yours.
