My dad is a civil engineer. As a school child if I was ever ill from school I would have to go to work with dad and sleep in his car with my duvet while he worked at different sewage plants, he'd work for an hour or so at each plant, managing the workmen then we'd drive to the next one. Surprisingly a really good place to look after a sick child! Although it has sparked a lifelong interest(?) in how we deal with our waste. Taught me how much work can go into something that few people will ever thank you for. But it was a good job that needed to be done, and a reason not to bunk of school too often!

I am a retired wastewater treatment plant operator and I am so pleased that you know something about our often thankless jobs. Clean water is a basic necessity for life. Just like turning on a light switch, flushing the toilet or running a kitchen faucet are the basis of modern civilization. we are the forgotten workers in society, until our systems don't work!!

When I was a little orangutan, I learned that all water is basically recycled pee. I was so disgusted, I told my mom I wouldn't ever drink water again. She kind of chuckled to herself, and asked me sarcastically what I would drink, if not water. "Gatorade," I said. She then told me to look on the label of a Gatorade bottle, and I was crushed to discover the first ingredient on there was water.

The English word is taken from the Latin _sēpticus,_ itself borrowed into Latin from the Greek.
Because Greek was essentially unknown in the West until the Turkish seizure of Constantinople, ancient Greek words were able to come into the Western Languages before that diaspora only through their earlier, Classical Latin borrowings. (This rediscovery of Ancient Greek was one of the main reasons for the Renaissance; and the rediscovery both of the original, Greek New Testament, and of Plato, the origin the Reformation.)

For some reason, I've been fascinated with waste management and water management on the home and city level. Loved taking trips to the water treatment facilities and they would explain where the water came from and the process involved in cleaning it.
Same with waste management, I think the idea of using huge bacteria pools to clean the water is really interesting.

Fun fact: If you live in New Orleans, your tap water has been recycled over 200 times, I think actually something like 270 times. It's taken out of the Mississippi for drinking water, and discharged back after being treated in a wastewater plant.
Don't worry though, it's disinfected before it's discharged back so it is pretty safe at that point, then it's disinfected again before it comes to your tap.
Also, if you can taste chlorine, you should complain to your city hall. At the most, you should be able to barely smell it, but not really taste it. Besides, they can save money by using less chlorine.

I lived near a large property at one time where they tried to save money on grass fertilizer by using sewage sludge instead of animal poop. Seems that tomato seeds survive our digestive system and the sewage treatment nicely and they ended up with a beautiful yard of tomato plants, probably every variety imaginable! No word on how they were dealt with! 💩💩

40 years ago, I was listening to a radio phone-in gardening show in San Antonio and they were talking about free fertilizer- activated sewer sludge being available at the Rilling Road Sewer Treatment Plant. "Free" sounded pretty good to me, so I went down to the treatment plant. Before picking (shoveling) it into my pick-up, they told me exactly what it was and made me sign a form stating it was not to be used on any crop that was not to be cooked. I wanted it to fertilize my new lawn, so That was ideal. Some folks might complain that the dried sludge stunk, but it reminded me of my grandmothers root-cellar. After applying it to my front yard, about 3 weeks later, I noticed little plants popping up that weren't Bermuda grass. A neighbor walked over and asked me why I'd planted tomato plants in my yard. Sure enough, the tomato seeds in tomato's are not digested by folks, but passed thru and grew 3-4 inches tall never produced fruit.

We get our water from a huge aquifer via wells all over the city. Where could our sewage treatment plant dump our water? There are no rivers or lakes near it for miles. Do they just...pump it back down into the ground to refill the aquifer...?

At the end of LA's MWD's process [which processes 400 acre/ft per day...yeah] is a long pipe that terminates 500 ft below sea level out in the Catalina channel. I've always been curious about that effluent pipe. How can water flow at 500 ft crush pressure? Isn't it too much pressure to allow water to flow. And yet there it flows - 400 acre foot per day, every day.

Theres also a third way to treat septic water, though its still very new and used mostly in parks, cottages and rural homes in Ontario. the thrid way uses o3 or ozone to kill everything with in the water well taking very few of the nurents out. for any battria in the pipes hydron peroxide is add witch evorpes completly in a few seconds. most of it wil be gone before you finsh pooring your glass of water. the O3 has the same effect, in cottiges, and homes the water will come out bubbly, but thats just excess O3 coming off.

I just purchased a brand new house sort of in the country but only 20 minutes from the city and every house in this neighborhood is on septic. I just realized I should buy some of that flushable stuff for septic systems. The water is also well water and it killed an entire area of my family and their entire neighborhood in the country. They all got weird forms of cancer.

Nitrates and Phosphates trigger a boom for plant life, algae in particular, since we are so fond of putting our waste in water sources.
This can trigger an Algal Bloom effect though, where tons of algae is produced, more than fish and other algae eaters can consume, and all this algae eventually dies and starts decomposing, which deoxygenates the water, causing the wildlife that relies on oxygen to suffocate and die.
