  • We all know Thomas Edison, his accomplishments are legendary, over 1000 patents were issued to this prolific inventor. Nikola Tesla, noted Serbian academic, was another inventor from the same period, trained in Europe as an engineer, he emigrated to the United States where he never attained the stature of Edison but arguably accomplished more. He is the inventor of our modern electrical power grid. This video summarizes this accomplishment and the role that both Edison and Tesla played in this accomplishment.

I first heard of Tesla when in high school (over 40 years ago). In college, I built a Tesla coil for fun. Today, I have made certain that my children know who this person was and what he did for us. Unfortunately, his accomplishments are still not well known by the masses.

Brilliant video as always! But there is only one thing I have to disagree. It's almost irrelevant but, Tesla's vision of modern electricity was that everyone have free wireless electric power witch he did in public to show that it is possible.
It would be great video if you could make one with explanations of wireless electric energy. :) Thank you for all your great videos!

4:05 Electrons actually physically flow from the negative side to the positive side. Although everything is commonly done or calculated with conventional flow (plus to minus).

Brilliant video! Learnt more about AC vs DC in 10 minutes than from the boring science classes I had when I was a student in the late 80s in Singapore. Excellent presentation as usual. Just the right pace. Not too fast, not too slow. America needs more Science Educators of your calibre.

Love the videos! How science is put into perspective. Engineering and sciences are amazing and life-changing, I am probably not smart enough to do them, but I love them.

I am confused slightly. Voltage is like the speed of which charge travels to either poles, so if you have a low Ampere, high voltage circuit, you would still get a fair amount of coulombs passing a cross section of conductor per second resulting in much more amps? Or is it that the more voltage, the more joules are released resulting in more efficiency yet a low current?

Then light energy become heat energy. But that was a smooth steam engine. But still Edison invented light bulb, so both are great =)

Nowadays high voltage direct current is much more better, less power loss and even cheaper then AC. There is a chance DC could fight back!

well, at least this was a better visual explanation of AC. The concept of obtaining higher current through lower voltages is still a bit fuzzy.

to correct your description: tesla wasn't trained in serbia. he was ethnically a serb but he was born and lived in croatia and as far as i know he never visited the region where serbia is today. before leaving for the states he was trained in graz, budapest, vienna and prague which had the best universities in the austro-hungarian empire. it's like insisting obama is keniyan or something. who cares and what's the point?
