Minute Book Reports It was slightly different from the repeated formula (Which I actually liked.) by making one of the guardians an antagonist, I liked the "In" and "Out" dynamic, Gunther(Though, this detail is exclusive to the Netflix series.), Café Salmonella, Esmé, Jerome(Though I hate how they Stupified him in the Netflix series.), and The In-Auction.
Ethereal Sky Daddy same, that and Vile Village I felt didnt have much content, yeah there was big reveals and events but the story was just overall flat in both
Jonathan Perez Yeah, I guess I liked Vile Village a bit more because at the end of it, the story shifts and the orphans have to be on the lam. But looking back the actual story of The VV was quite flat.
Same my order from worst to best is 4,7,3,11,1,9,8,2,10,13,6,chapter 14,(if u look in book thirteen chapter 14 is counted so yeah),12 , and the best one is number five austre academy
about "the reptile room" I liked it. the only thing that disappointed me was that the week that Monty spent with the children was very brief and I think if he had talked more about that week to develop more the relationship of Monty and the children, his death would have been more sad and about "the miserable mill" I did not like it because I do not feel it is very relevant to the rest of the books, the only thing that it contributes is that Quigley mentions that he visit Dr. Orwell's office to look for the Baudelaires track and the reappearance Phil on The Grim Grotto and of Sir and Charles in the Penultimate Peril and than Charles and Sir are possibly members Also Sir does not like me :v but respect your opinion n.n
I think when Lemony Snicket was writing the first 3 he was just starting out with a series like that and once he realized how repetitive it was he started changing it up and advancing the story.
After I read The Bad Beginning, my parents refused to buy me the second book because it was almost as short and I'd "get through it too fast". It really annoyed me, because I wanted to read the series from start to finish, so I had to settle for reading the third book instead of the second. Eventually my grandparents got me the second book. I also read the fourth, fifth and sixth out of order, but that was it. I bought the next two over the next year, and then I had a birthday and one of my aunts sent me the ninth and tenth. I got the others as they came out. I still remember going to the bookshop and seeing The End stacked around a Count Olaf standee. Madame Lulu, or Olivia, as that's her real name, has the motto "give people what they want". Count Olaf must have asked the crystal ball where the Baudelaires were that last day, and Olivia must have told him that they were in disguise in the House of Freaks, because she was telling him what he wanted to hear. She was devoted to her motto of giving people what they wanted, even to the detriment of her moral fibre. That was the reason she sold them out. I felt like each time a sibling got separated from the other two, that sibling ended up in a situation where their helplessness was inevitable. For Klaus in #4, this was because he was hypnotized. He had a word for orders, but apart from that, he was just confused and fuzzy, so couldn't really think for himself even when he wasn't being ordered around. For Violet in #8, there was no explanation for exactly how they were able to anesthetize her, but I guess they caught her off-guard. After all, there were several of them and just one of her. However, as I mentioned, Violet being unconscious also made her helpless at the climax, but, like Klaus, she wakes up and gets them out of the hospital, similar to #4 when Klaus saved Charles by inventing something. Violet mentions having trouble focusing her skills when she's first trying to think what to do, but at least she manages it.
Anyone else remember how hard it was to get Miserable Mill from your local library; because, that long wait for book 4 is something that my siblings and I struggled with separately.
My List 1. The End 2. The Ersatz Elevator 3. The Penultimate Peril 4. The Reptile Room 5. The Wide Window 6. The Slippery Slope 7. The Carnivorious Carnival 8. The Grim Grotto 9. The Hostile Hospital 10. The Bad Beginning 11. The Austere Academy 12. The Vile Village 13. The Miserable Mill
Thanks for sharing your list. It goes to show that people gravitate toward different books. I put the Miserable Mill near the top of my list, but you placed it at the bottom. lol. I also didn't care too much for The Reptile Room, but you placed it pretty high. Glad you read all the books. It's a great series.
I'm not entirely sure what my list would look like but The End and Carnivorous Carnival definitely need to swap places. The End is not bad but it's not the best finish to a series and that colors my perspective a bit.
I feel like Lemony Snicket/ Daniel Handler wrote the books to show how different age groups would react with Violet being a Teen Klaus being in the pre teens and Sunny being an infant
*The List* 13. The Reptile Room 12. The Wide Window 11. The Ersatz Elevator 10. The Vile Village 9. The Grim Grotto 8. The Bad Beginning 7. The Carnivorous Carnival 6. The Slippery Slope 5. The Austere Academy 4. The Hostile Hospital 3. The Penultimate Peril 2. The Miserable Mill 1. The End
My input, As a child in elementary school I stumbled on the hostel hospital. The cover of the book caught my eye in the school library so you could say that started my unfortunate events. I feel in love with the style that Lemony Snicket wrote the series in. Being young I continued the series out of order starting with Hostel Hospital then Carnivore circus on the elevator I decided I needed to go from the beginning. To my surprise i had the first 3 books in my house that I never noticed was there. This series impacted me as a young adult. Lemony Snicket take me lessons about life in a way parents try to shield children from. I am fortunate or maybe unfortunate enough to understand by The end what the purpose from this series is questions that will never be answered.
My list from the most favourite to the least: 1. The Reptile Room 2. The Miserable Mill 3. The Carnivorous Carnival 4. The Penultimate Peril 5. The Slippery Slope 6. The Wide Window 7. The Ersatz Elevator 8. The Bad Beginning 9. The Vile Village 10. The Austere Academy 11. The Grim Grotto 12. The End 13. The Hostile Hospital I think my love for the miserable mill is an unpopular opinion xD
The Reptile Room is fun. Monty was so sweet. I don't think I like the Slippery Slope as much as you do. I didn't like the "exploration" of that story. There was this big mystery that the Baudelaire's really wanted to solve but they couldn't because the VDF headquarters had been burnt down and I didn't find what they discovered all that interesting.
Ersatz Elevator, Vile Village, and Carnivorous Carnival are my top 3 books. I have no idea why but these three books specifically really stuck out to me when i was younger.
Jack Nolan I agree, and to answer your question Minute Bokok Reports just the running theme of misery in the air. Asoue air was always miserable but the Miserable Mill has more "misery" than the other books. Just my opinion ☺
The Netflix show did The Reptile Room better... Monty does realise that Olaf is an imposter and the kids know that Monty has recognised this fact. But Monty believes that the imposter is from the herpetology society and therefore not too dangerous.
Wow thank you for making this list! I definitely have completely different opinions than you, and I think we enjoyed the books for different reasons. In my opinion, the point of the series is showing how gray everything really is, how nothing can easily be explained in a black or white way. You talked several times about the weaknesses of the guardians as being faults of the books, I think their weaknesses are highlighted on purpose. Most of their guardians (not all!) are not bad people, but their motives have been convoluted to the point they are doing harm to the Baudelaires. Another thing I think we interpreted the series differently: much of Snicket's writing is purposely not meant to be enjoyable for the reader. The whole series is a cliffhanger that never pays off. It is constantly teasing you with information, relationships, and backstory that is never fully revealed. I think this is a genius move by Snicket as it allows room for the reader to imagine what they want to see, as well as leaving enough clues that much of the information that isn't explicitly revealed is hinted at throughout the series. Again, I'm really grateful for such a long video devoted to this series, but I can't help but feel you missed the point a little bit. I hope this makes at least a bit of sense.
I’m not sure what will just happen to end up in “last” place if I were to list my favorites. But at the moment (before reading the tragedy that awaits in the end) I definitely liked penultimate peril, and ersatz elevator. (Something about complex hotels/apartments gets my attention) I kind of liked grim grotto, slippery slope, reptile room, and vile village. Sort of liked carnivorous carnival, hostile Hospital, and austere Academy. that just leaves bad beginning, Wide window, and Miserable mill. I guess I’ll put pony party in last place
Super late, but as a kid who grew up under super dark circumstances i related a lot to the loose ends and cliffhangers and lack of closure that was a very regular part of my life. The absurdity of the books mirrored the absurdity of real life to me esp as a child and the Baudelaires were always a beacon of hope and a great escape, even tho like them, life was often much more disappointing than hopeful.
My theory was that Snicket/Handler planned for there only to be four books but decided to put an overarching mystery in his other books so fans would continue to return. It would explain why it only took five novels to learn about V.F.D
Here’s my least favorite asoue book to my favorite asoue events books then the reason why they got that spot 13.the vile village:I found it very forgettable 12.the carnivorous carnival: Madame lulu 11.the miserable mill:poes stupidity 10.the reptile room :Stephano 9.the wide window :aunt Josephine 8.the slippery slope :violet and klaus letting sunny stay there 7.the hostile Hospital:klaus 6.the grimm grotto :the fungus 5.the ersatz elevator :Jerome 4.the astuer(I can’t spell) academy :loved Carmelita hated Olaf’s disguise 3.the bad beginning :set the mood for the series 2.the end :loved everything except the last chapter and Olaf’s death annoyed me cause he was a great character (I know he was evil but I still loved his character) 1.the penultimate peril :basically everyone came back and I loved everyone being there and all the mystery in it
@leahj1428 The Vile Village is actually really important to the series. It's the moment where the storyline changes and the Baudelaires have to be their own guardians while wanted for a crime they didn't commit.
I LOVED the reptile room. I feel like the plot was very interesting, and it was the first time one of Olaf’s disguises was mentioned. Even the minor details like the horse radish factory just add a lot of character to the book and become important later on
Oh!Good list, definitely made some points! This is my mine: 13:Grim Grotto:Boring in a lot of places, felt like padding until the final two books. 12:The Wide Window:Still quite boring, but it’s saved from last place because it does start to get more interesting after this(for the most part) and this book does lay the foundation for that. 11:The End(I am not counting chapter fourteen):I feel really bad about putting it here because the final scenes of this book is great, but my main problem with this book is that it feels completely disconnected from the rest of the series, why do we need to see an oppressed island in the middle of nowhere to end this series? It adds some small interesting details to the world, but that’s all really, not that many answers either. 10:The Vile Village:Carried by its ending,There’s not a lot and Detective Dupin is the only real Count Olaf disguise that gets on my nerves.A paper thin plot aside from the ending too. 9:The Reptile Room:feels like the orphans get too comfy in this book with Monty,Not totally though, but it still feels that way. Also paper-thin plot. 8:The Austere Academy:The concept is not that interesting at all,Pretty bland, but the quagmires some really likeable side characters and they are some moments that make me laugh. 7:The Bad beginning:Gets you into the series really well, the plot can be summed up as: ‘Count Olaf is abusing the kids for like 250 pages until reveals he’s marrying one of them’ 6:The Estarz Elevator:I do respect it because of the reveal Esme was working with Olaf,it’s a nice subversion of the trope we got used to for the 5 books before this. Some good comedy, but quite a few plot holes too which holds it back for being great. (Now we get onto my favourites): 5:The Miserable Mill:This is a pretty dark book,I also love the Klaus hypnotism scenes but some of the things are a pretty confusing and mind-boggling and I think Poe is at one of his most annoying in this book. 4:The Slippery Slope:Well paced, got a smooth transition between TCC and this book but it’s not as good as the other ones. 3:The Carnivorous Carnival:The Freaks are handled wonderfully in this book,as someone with a High-functioning disability it’s both wonderful and hilarious to see these completely normal people be called ‘Freaks’ because of one abnormality. 2:The Hostile Hospital:Dark and throughout the entire book,it feels like the children are constantly about to turn around and see Count Olaf, and his disguise in this book is probably is my favourite,Its a radio presenter,so we never see him in this disguise(Hell,The complete reck pictures of count Olaf’s disguises just show him as a Radio) so he feels almost always present in this book, constantly lurking around every Conner. 1:The Penultimate Peril:There’s so much to talk about in this book that I don’t even have time to list it all,Details like Lemony Smoking in this, ect, are amazing…You know what?Just go read the book for yourself!
My favourite by far that I read of this series is the Hostile Hospital. I love that it’s quite dark and also how it felt like there was a sense of suspense throughout the book. Also it’s darkly epic in the second half of the book as well.
My ranking: 1st: The Penultimate Peril(Best) 2nd: The Austere Academy 3rd: The Vile Village 4th: The Reptile Room 5th: The Ersatz Elevator 6th: The Carnivorous Carnival 7th: The Bad Beginning 8th: The End 9th: The Hostile Hospital 10th: The Slippery Slope 11th: The Grim Grotto 12th: The Wide Window 13th: The Miserable Mill(Worst)
Asoue from least best to great (in my opinion. I love all of them. Just some more than others): 13. Miserable Mill 12: Vile Village 11. The Wide Window (mostly because of Josephine. Besides Poe, I thought she was the worst character. ESPECIALLY in the books.) 10. The Bad Beginning (I didn’t hate it but because of my love for the other books I couldn’t rank it higher) 9. The Slippery Slope 8. The Penultimate Peril 7. The Reptile Room 6. The Grim Grotto 5. The End 4. Austere Academy 3. The Hostile Hospital 2. The Carnivorous Carnival 1. The Ersatz Elevator (That’s just my opinion though. How’d you rank the books?)
This series did in fact teach me as a kid to hope, to persevere, and to never EVER give up on trying to be a good person even in a wicked world that doesn't seem to care. You cannot always rely on others. You often can't. But you CAN rely on yourself and those who truly do love, get, and appreciate you. The series is so important for that alone, and I hope if I ever have children I'll be able to read them to my kids. Because I want them to become Baudelaires, not Olafs or Mr. Poes or Josephines or VP Neros or Sirs or Madame Lulus or Carmelitas or any of the VFD members who didn't learn to check themselves and be courageous before the fire of conflict destroyed them from within.
Hopefully the show shows what happened with the question mark, and that taxi driver, and VFD, and even some of what happened to the Baudelaires themselves. Edit: I just saw the trailer, and the taxi driver is actually Lemony Snicket!
I’m kinda surprised how high up the miserable mill is. In my opinion it just felt kind of boring and rushed, and repetitive. For example Klaus broke his glasses multiple times and it was for the same reason of one of count Olaf’s workers tripping him and him going and being hypnotized by dr Orwell.
@16:00 If you read the prequel series you get a kind of answer to what the question mark is. But it definitely does not make 100% sense as the answer either 😅
@@MinuteBookReports Heyy, the 'All The Wrong Questions' series is pretty good too! I understand your apprehension that reading other books from this universe may spoil the original charm that ASOUE holds for you.. But rest assured, that is not the case here!
My Rankings: 13- The Miserable Mill Not Much to say about it to be honest. 12- The Wide Window I guess the Lachrymose Leeches were cool.. 11- The Carnivorous Carnival Hmm... it was OK 10- The Grim Grotto This one just didn’t do it for me. I read about 80 pages of this book past midnight, so maybe I was so tired it didn’t seem as entertaining... I’m not sure. 9- The Austere Academy The introduction of the Quagmires was probably the best part. 8- The Vile Village VFD. 7- The Ersatz Elevator Pretty good! 6- The Reptile Room Most people seem to dislike this book, but I love it! 5- The Hostile Hospital Definitely the second darkest book of the series. 4- The Bad Beginning Gotta stick with the classics. 3- The Slippery Slope Cold, snowy, setting, love it! And let’s just acknowledge the fact that Bruce, the most underrated character, shows up again! And of course, there was a certain break on a certain ledge of a certain cliff that involved two certain children.. 2- The End Greatest plot twist/cliffhanger I have ever read! 1- The Penultimate Peril I think the reason this book was so good is because of the reappearance of so many characters.
Here’s my list 1 The end 2 wide window 3 austere academy 4 penultimate peril 5 hostile hospital 6 reptile room 7 ersatz elevator 8 slippery slope 9 grim grotto 10 bad beginning 11 carnivorous carnival 12 vile village 13 miserable mill

Minute Book Reports I liked the characters and I loved the twist about Fiona and her brother. I likes the books as they went on but the last two seemed to leave things out
I dont know if this was in the book but ive seen it on netflix but it said that madam lulu was the librarian but i dont know if its in the book aka the carnivores carnival
My List 1 The Penultimate Peril 2 The Reptile Room 3 The Grim Grotto 4 The Hostile Hospital 5 The Carnivorous Carnival 6 The Vile Village 7 The End 8 The Wide Window 9 The Bad Beginning 10 The Ersatz Elevator 11 The Austere Academy 12 The Slippery Slope 13 The Miserable Mills Tell me your list
Minute Book Reports There was this one time I was so addicted to the series in my first time reading it that I read The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, and half of The Hostile Hospital In one day. I went to bed that night, and had the oddest dream ever. So the dream started off with the Baudelaires in the Vile Village and they were walking around for whatever reason. So they end up going to bed, but Violet gets out of bed and goes to the Baudelaire parents. The parents want Violet to poison Sunny and Klaus for some reason... and then it ended. Very weird...
I think my top 3 would be: 1) The Vile Village 2) The Carnivorous Carnival 3) The Reptile Room I don't know for sure, cause it's been a while since I've read these, but the rest might be like this: 4) The Ersazt Elevator 5) The Austere Academy. 6) The Bad Beginning 7) The Wide Window 8) The Miserable Mill 9) The Hostile Hospital 10) The End 11) The Grim Grotto 12) The Slippery Slope 13) The Penultimate Peril The top three books have the best story and the best writing and I was the most interested in Snicket's narration in those. I re-read the Penultimate Peril recently and it turned out to be a lot more boring than I remember. I think the Grim Grotto is better. I don't think The End is bad it's just not the most satisfying conclusion and the people on the island weren't that interesting.
The only thing that is consistent with almost everybody’s list is Penultimate Peril being top 4. Absolute classic, my personal favorite. RIP Dewey Denoumont
My list 13. The Grim Grotto 12. The End 11. The Carnivorous Carnival 10. The Wide Window 9. The Austure Academy 8. The Wide Window 7.The Miserable Mill 6. The Vile Village 5.The Bad Beginning 4. The Slippery Slope 3. The Hostile Hospital 2. The Penultimate Peril 1. The Ersatz Elevator
same, it was hard for me to decide between the miserable mill, the hostile hospital, and the penultimate peril but i finally decided that the miserable mill was the best in my opinion
The Miserable Mill sucks. It was so bland. I read the first 2 chapters, then put it back and got the Austere Academy. I finally read it when I read The End.
1. The Ersatz Elevator 2. The Penultimate Peril 3. The Hostile Hospital 4. The Austere Academy 5. The Grim Grotto 6. The Bad Beginning 7. The Carnivorous Carnival 8. The Vile Village 9. The Slippery Slope 10. The Reptile Room 11. The Wide Window 12. The Miserable Mill 13. The End
I have to say that the 4th book is my least favourite. You never really learn anything new about any of the kids or characters and in my eyes is just kind of filler
MY OPINION Least to Greatest 13.The Vile Village 12.The Wide Window 11.The Bad Beginning 10.The Miserable Mill 9.Ersatz Elevator 8.The Slippery Slope 7.The Carnivorous Carnival 6.The Reptile Room 5.Hostile Hospital 4.Austere Academy 3.The Grim Grotto (WhY sO mUcH hAtE?) 2.The Penultimate Peril 1.The End.
My least favourite to favourite; 13. The carnivorous carnival 12. The reptile room 11. The vile village 10. The wide window 9. The penultimate peril 8. The bad beginning 7. The austere academy 6.the end 5.the grim grotto 4.the ersatz elevator 3.the slippery slope 2.the hostile hospital 1. The miserable mill

my Least Favorite is The miserable mill
and my favorite is The End
Wow. I really like The Miserable Mill. I thought it was an interesting twist to the familiar plot the author used.

Also Sir does not like me :v

I like the role reversal in TMM of Violet researching and Klaus inventing.
my least favorite is The End
my Favorite is The Carnivorous Carnavil
I think when Lemony Snicket was writing the first 3 he was just starting out with a series like that and once he realized how repetitive it was he started changing it up and advancing the story.
That's a good point. The stories got more interesting.
TheOneandOnly I agree with the point, but just to make sure, you know that Lemony Snicket isn’t real.

What!? I loved the Incredibly Deadly Viper.... Uncle Monty and Jerome were my favorite guardians!
Doggo AJ I liked the Incredibly Deadly Viper as well. They are cool.
Same
@ Doggo this is all his opinion don’t take it personally
i agree with monty, but jerome was a guardian who legit stood up for nothing and in the end abandoned them.

Dude i couldn’t read the second one either. My mom wouldn’t let me
I found Madam Lulu to be a mercenary. She would help anyone as long as she got some advantage for herself.
mercenary means hired assassin

*We KNOW what mercenary means!*
Anyone else remember how hard it was to get Miserable Mill from your local library; because, that long wait for book 4 is something that my siblings and I struggled with separately.

13. The Miserable Mill
Jake Lafferty the grim grotto will always have a special place in my heart
Thanks for sharing your list. It goes to show that people gravitate toward different books. I put the Miserable Mill near the top of my list, but you placed it at the bottom. lol. I also didn't care too much for The Reptile Room, but you placed it pretty high. Glad you read all the books. It's a great series.
I agree. The Miserable Mill was my least favorite of 13.
RealmzJake _ the Astere Academy was far and above favorite, the end being second
I'm not entirely sure what my list would look like but The End and Carnivorous Carnival definitely need to swap places. The End is not bad but it's not the best finish to a series and that colors my perspective a bit.
The first book (I think) has commentary about most of the problems with our judicial system.
I feel like Lemony Snicket/ Daniel Handler wrote the books to show how different age groups would react with Violet being a Teen Klaus being in the pre teens and Sunny being an infant
If the end wasn't gonna be the end i would call it "The isolated island"
Hamisweird I was thinking that the whole time
Hailey Lokken yeah that works because the first book was the bad beginning
@Hailey Lokken yes

3:08 Everything is a disappointment... what do you expect from a series called "A Series of Unfortunate Events?" 😆
That's true. :)
Yay, your number 1 is my number 1. It has a special place in my heart
That's awesome. It's kind of hard not to have that book as the best. lol
My input,
As a child in elementary school I stumbled on the hostel hospital.
1 grim grotto
2 Ersatz elevator
3 Reptile room
4 austere academy
5 penultimate peril
6 slippery slope
7 bad begging
8 the end
9 carnivorous carnival
10 hostile hospital
11 vile village
12 - 13 miserable mill & wide window
My list from the most favourite to the least:
1. The Reptile Room
2. The Miserable Mill
3. The Carnivorous Carnival
4. The Penultimate Peril
5. The Slippery Slope
6. The Wide Window
7. The Ersatz Elevator
8. The Bad Beginning
9. The Vile Village
10. The Austere Academy
11. The Grim Grotto
12. The End
13. The Hostile Hospital
I think my love for the miserable mill is an unpopular opinion xD
I really liked how dark the Hostile Hospital was
true the miserable mill sucks a lot
@@slambotv1334 hostile hospital was actually a good book
The Hostile Hospital is my favorite because of the creative idea and the dark, intense finale
I think the narration is the most interesting with those ones.
Some times
The end is located at the end.
THE END of THE END is never THE END!!
I think the miserable mill is the worst
How come you think it's the worst?
Jack Nolan I agree, and to answer your question Minute Bokok Reports just the running theme of misery in the air. Asoue air was always miserable but the Miserable Mill has more "misery" than the other books. Just my opinion ☺
Hence the name "The Miserable Mill", heck even the title includes the word miserable
Jack Nolan Agreed. The setting is so dull and not much happens. Plus Shirley in my opinion is Count Olaf’s laziest disguise.
It’s my favourite book
But at the moment (before reading the tragedy that awaits in the end)
I definitely liked penultimate peril, and ersatz elevator. (Something about complex hotels/apartments gets my attention)
I kind of liked grim grotto, slippery slope, reptile room, and vile village.
Sort of liked carnivorous carnival, hostile Hospital, and austere Academy.
that just leaves bad beginning, Wide window, and Miserable mill.
I guess I’ll put pony party in last place
I like that the last one has 14 chapters because 13 is an unlucky number and at the end it’s like their unlucky ness is over
But the 14th Chapter is 13 pages long!
Aunt josephine cant move away because she is afraid of real estate agents
Are you kidding? I love the Grim Grotto...
Tbh I think that's in my top 5 worst.
TGG is PEAK i LOVE TGG
Super late, but as a kid who grew up under super dark circumstances i related a lot to the loose ends and cliffhangers and lack of closure that was a very regular part of my life. The absurdity of the books mirrored the absurdity of real life to me esp as a child and the Baudelaires were always a beacon of hope and a great escape, even tho like them, life was often much more disappointing than hopeful.
My theory was that Snicket/Handler planned for there only to be four books but decided to put an overarching mystery in his other books so fans would continue to return. It would explain why it only took five novels to learn about V.F.D
Here’s my least favorite asoue book to my favorite asoue events books then the reason why they got that spot
13.the vile village:I found it very forgettable
12.the carnivorous carnival: Madame lulu
11.the miserable mill:poes stupidity
10.the reptile room :Stephano
9.the wide window :aunt Josephine
8.the slippery slope :violet and klaus letting sunny stay there
7.the hostile Hospital:klaus
6.the grimm grotto :the fungus
5.the ersatz elevator :Jerome
4.the astuer(I can’t spell) academy :loved Carmelita hated Olaf’s disguise
3.the bad beginning :set the mood for the series
2.the end :loved everything except the last chapter and Olaf’s death annoyed me cause he was a great character (I know he was evil but I still loved his character)
1.the penultimate peril :basically everyone came back and I loved everyone being there and all the mystery in it
Jacques snicket is Vile village
@leahj1428 The Vile Village is actually really important to the series. It's the moment where the storyline changes and the Baudelaires have to be their own guardians while wanted for a crime they didn't commit.

I LOVED the reptile room. I feel like the plot was very interesting, and it was the first time one of Olaf’s disguises was mentioned. Even the minor details like the horse radish factory just add a lot of character to the book and become important later on
Oh!Good list,definitely made some points!
This is my mine:
13:Grim Grotto:Boring in a lot of places, felt like padding until the final two books.
7:The Bad beginning:Gets you into the series really well, the plot can be summed up as: ‘Count Olaf is abusing the kids for like 250 pages until reveals he’s marrying one of them’
6:The Estarz Elevator:I do respect it because of the reveal Esme was working with Olaf,it’s a nice subversion of the trope we got used to for the 5 books before this. Some good comedy, but quite a few plot holes too which holds it back for being great.
(Now we get onto my favourites):
5:The Miserable Mill:This is a pretty dark book,I also love the Klaus hypnotism scenes but some of the things are a pretty confusing and mind-boggling and I think Poe is at one of his most annoying in this book.
My ranking:
1st: The Penultimate Peril(Best)
2nd: The Austere Academy
3rd: The Vile Village
4th: The Reptile Room
5th: The Ersatz Elevator
6th: The Carnivorous Carnival
7th: The Bad Beginning
8th: The End
9th: The Hostile Hospital
10th: The Slippery Slope
11th: The Grim Grotto
12th: The Wide Window
13th: The Miserable Mill(Worst)
Same except switch Austere Academy and slippery slope
FINALLY a ranking that actually puts both The Vile Village and The Reptile Room high up.
Asoue from least best to great (in my opinion. I love all of them. Just some more than others):
13. Miserable Mill
12: Vile Village
11. The Wide Window (mostly because of Josephine. Besides Poe, I thought she was the worst character. ESPECIALLY in the books.)
10. The Bad Beginning (I didn’t hate it but because of my love for the other books I couldn’t rank it higher)
9. The Slippery Slope
8. The Penultimate Peril
7. The Reptile Room
6. The Grim Grotto
5. The End
4. Austere Academy
3. The Hostile Hospital
2. The Carnivorous Carnival

9: Carnivorous Carnival

The mill is one of my favorites
Ahh... i remember reading this series in primary 5!

These books are so underrated
Hopefully the show shows what happened with the question mark, and that taxi driver, and VFD, and even some of what happened to the Baudelaires themselves.
Edit: I just saw the trailer, and the taxi driver is actually Lemony Snicket!

Thanks for doing this.
My favorite by far is the Ersatz Elevator and you placed it at 11!?
Leo Seguin his opinion
@16:00 If you read the prequel series you get a kind of answer to what the question mark is. But it definitely does not make 100% sense as the answer either 😅
Will you summarize The Beatrice Letters?
I probably won't be reading the other books. I thought about it, but I wanted to move on.
@@MinuteBookReports Heyy, the 'All The Wrong Questions' series is pretty good too!
I understand your apprehension that reading other books from this universe may spoil the original charm that ASOUE holds for you.. But rest assured, that is not the case here!
My Rankings:
13- The Miserable Mill
Not Much to say about it to be honest.
12- The Wide Window
I guess the Lachrymose Leeches were cool..
11- The Carnivorous Carnival
Hmm... it was OK
10- The Grim Grotto
This one just didn’t do it for me. I read about 80 pages of this book past midnight, so maybe I was so tired it didn’t seem as entertaining... I’m not sure.
9- The Austere Academy
The introduction of the Quagmires was probably the best part.
8- The Vile Village
VFD.
7- The Ersatz Elevator
Pretty good!
6- The Reptile Room
Most people seem to dislike this book, but I love it!
5- The Hostile Hospital
Definitely the second darkest book of the series.
4- The Bad Beginning
Gotta stick with the classics.
3- The Slippery Slope
Cold, snowy, setting, love it! And let’s just acknowledge the fact that Bruce, the most underrated character, shows up again! And of course, there was a certain break on a certain ledge of a certain cliff that involved two certain children..
2- The End
Greatest plot twist/cliffhanger I have ever read!
1- The Penultimate Peril
I think the reason this book was so good is because of the reappearance of so many characters.
I liked it, just not as much as the other books.

I read all of them too. I had dreams of Count Olaf and stuff, it was great lol.
Interesting. I don't think I've ever dreamed about Count Olaf. :)

1) The Vile Village
2) The Carnivorous Carnival
3) The Reptile Room
I don't know for sure, cause it's been a while since I've read these, but the rest might be like this:
4) The Ersazt Elevator
5) The Austere Academy.
6) The Bad Beginning
7) The Wide Window
8) The Miserable Mill
9) The Hostile Hospital
10) The End
11) The Grim Grotto
12) The Slippery Slope
13) The Penultimate Peril
The top three books have the best story and the best writing and I was the most interested in Snicket's narration in those.
I re-read the Penultimate Peril recently and it turned out to be a lot more boring than I remember. I think the Grim Grotto is better. I don't think The End is bad it's just not the most satisfying conclusion and the people on the island weren't that interesting.
At 2:17 you got a bit wrong. He had seen Olaf because they both worked for V.F.D.
The only thing that is consistent with almost everybody’s list is Penultimate Peril being top 4. Absolute classic, my personal favorite. RIP Dewey Denoumont
Monty knew they were both in vfd

I can’t choose there are three books that I love so much
Which books are your favorite?
The Ersatz elevator the vile village and the hostile hospital
same, it was hard for me to decide between the miserable mill, the hostile hospital, and the penultimate peril but i finally decided that the miserable mill was the best in my opinion
That's a good choice. I really liked The Miserable Mill.
bodler? It’s “ boe-de ( de as in decorated ) -layer “
tbh I love the austere academy and the slippery slope
The Miserable Mill sucks. It was so bland. I read the first 2 chapters, then put it back and got the Austere Academy. I finally read it when I read The End.
anythingnew That I agree with. The end of the book is the best part.
