Dear Ms Stefanik,
I listened to your recent interview with Kristen Welker concerning January 6th. I found your position somewhat confusing. If your point is that the USA has a brutal criminal justice system, which imprisons more of its citizens and for longer than any other country, then I would applaud you for acknowledging that fact. As a matter of fact, the USA incarcerates its own citizens at roughly 6 times the rate of the average European Country, 18 times more than Japan, almost twice the rate of Russia and more than twice the rate of Iran. However, I don’t think that is the point you wanted to make.
Do you not consider that smashing windows and doors of an iconic public building, and breaking into that building are criminal acts? Do you believe that no criminal offences took place when a large mob overwhelmed and assaulted hundreds of police officers, rampaged through the Capitol building threating to “hang Mike Pence” and shouting “where’s Nancy”, occupying official offices, steeling computers, documents and other trophies, defecating in hallways etc, etc? Not to mention the actions of those such as the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys who actively plotted the assault and came prepared. Do you not think that it is the duty of the DOJ to investigate and prosecute when there is evidence of serious crimes?
Or do you think that those indicted and subsequently convicted in a court of law, were innocent of the above crimes? Some of them even had to admit their guilt because they incriminated themselves with boastful posts on social media having filmed themselves in the act. Some have even claimed to show some remorse.
If the answer to those 2 questions is that you do agree that those acts are criminal, and you do you do have faith that those convicted were in fact guilty, is it then your contention that their treatment was too harsh? If so, I might have some sympathy with that view, but it is worth noting that any independent minded observer must conclude that the response on the day from the authorities was much less aggressive than the typical response of police across the USA. Also, your concern about harsh treatment by the courts and DOJ would be totally inconsistent with the view that right-leaning Republicans (such as yourself) typically have, who are often asking for harsher sentences and conditions for other lawbreakers.
If your statements might show an awakening of consciousness that your country’s judicial system is brutal and inequitable, then I would welcome your conversion. However, by using the word “hostages” to describe those convicted and imprisoned as a consequence of their actions on January 6th, you are quite clearly pushing a narrative which is either delusional or deliberately false. It is the height of hypocrisy.
No one is disputing republican supporters rampaged on Jan 6th. Trump did NOT support them. That is what has been proved.
Someone needs to watch this guy whenever he comes and sit in a courtroom he has something bad on the outside planned so he can say I don't know what happened I was in court trying to intimidate the justices
The courts are very aware of Trump's delay tactics and will push forward with these trials because Justice and the Constitution matters! ⚖️📜
