Hi! Thanks for being an inspiration to start this hobby. I've always liked your videos but I have a very technical question in regarding this video. Won't adding tap water (with a little bit of chlorine) also kill your beneficial bacteria? If so, then how is it safe to add the tap water directly to your tank? Even if you've already added the water conditioner, I don't think it can spread fast enough to your newly added tap water before it reaches and kills the tank's beneficial bacteria. I hope I'm making some sense. As always, thanks for your advice.
I was always skeptical about how pouring a chemical into water removes another chemical until I read the chemistry behind it. Completely safe for fish, and it binds with the chlorine and produces Sulphur gas which evaporates quickly. Amazing stuff.
This was so helpful! I got so freaked out when I saw tons of people online saying you needed to wait a full day for it to dechlorinate. The context that they are probably veterans using older techniques was a LIFESAVER. Thanks for this informative video!

Now i go from tap (after adjusting water temp) to tank measure out my prime ......Done I tested my tap water to see what i had before starting new routine. Thank you for the really direct answer to this question, as I was very confused of the amount of water conditioner needed when you change 50% of water. Being new in this hobby it brings a lot of questions that is not always easy fo find a straight forwards answer.

Man people don’t read labels anymore Kev🤣 As you said it clearly say on the bottle you can safely dose up to 5 times the recommend dosage!

Great explanation of the process. Took away the stress not knowing how to add. I have a 270 gallon and I was adding while adding water. Now I can clean 🧽 do 25 to 50% water 💧 removal from vacuuming and just pour in the appropriate amount all at once then fill it up.

Kev. You never mention adding aquarium salt to your water changes and what brands you use. I think this would help some viewers with your input on it. Thanks Chris
I dont add aquarium salt during water changes. Hardly ever do. Aquarium salt should be addd sparingly. Its like a preventative, but you dont want to give a preventative all the time. I do add Cichlid salt during every water change which I do mention in my water change videos. But thats completely different from aquarium salt.
Important question: when I do a 80% water change, do I add the water conditioner into the now 20% water left, that is in the aquarium? Or do I add the water conditioner AFTER I refilled the aquarium to its 100%? Because when it's that little water left, and I add that much Conditioner, I am still scared that the amount might be negative for the fish, at least for a short a mount of time
New to channel, love the videos brother! This is exactly what I was looking for- I was nervous about using the python to run the tap water right into the tank, your video helped a million. Thank you!

Question? Do I need to keep adding stability and prime daily and for how long or is one time enough when starting out new..I do have gravel from my old tank that I put in my new bigger upgrade..but my fish died Wich is why I upgrades from a 10 gallon to a 40..but I'm not sure now how long I need to wait before I can add fish..I do have my media from old filter sitting in tank water waiting in my new filter for new tank to arrive 2moro
Sir, if I'm using ro water with 30 tds for a fresh water tank, adding api aquarium salt in the water will replenish the salt traces in the water!! Can I also use prime and stability with the salt in the aquarium??
Hey Kev, another great video. Just wondering, I read both the labels for Prime and Safe. What's the difference between the two? Which do you prefer? I'm leaning towards prime because it's in liquid form, which I prefer. Thanks in advance.
They are both pretty much the same except that prime will also detoxify some metals that safe will not. Also Safe is very concentrated and typically used for bigger tanks, 100G +. Anything less than 100G stick with Prime 💪
I used to do the pre change buckets and is hard for me now bc of physical issues. I only have a 30 gallon but even a few buckets then step ups to tank is hard. My brand is not one of the ones you mentioned It is Nutrafin. Is one brand better than the other? Just restarted hobby a few months ago and had purchased a red tail shark to go in with my neon tertras I had to move to him but just him to the 30. So took out a few gallons from smaller tank brand new water quite the job. A wee bloom not bad today waiting to get a few tank mates for him. I know technically I did this backwards as far as usually adding the shark last re territory and other fish but I had no choice. He was why I bought the tank. WE don't have a lot of space or Id have a much bigger tank but will enjoy my smaller ones.ty for great videos
Question! I have a 75 gallon freshwater tank for about 8 months now, With a Fluval 407 Canister, with five medium size angelfish and some other small fish. I take really good care of my tank, but during my water change today, I got distracted with a delivery for about 40 minutes and I forgot to add in my prime!! I totally freaked out and hurried and added it! I’m so afraid I’ll loose my fish🤦🏻♀️😬
I know this is not info pertaining to this current video but I have a question. I started a new cichlids tank and I’m have an issue with fish randomly dying but it’s only one. I’ve had this happen to 3 so far. I have a 55 gal tank with originally like 17 fish and the water conditions are good. I am not new to aquatics but new to cichlids. Any help would be a blessing 🙌🏻
They could be dying from over night aggression. Also if you're keeping African Cichlids, their PH levels are much higher than regular tropical fish. I suggest you check out this playlist on them, it'll be very helpful - th-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8MG9hyJ8PjbC33zEbcyy8__.html
Good info. Just like to add a point if ur adding extra dose of safe or prime make sure the surface aggregation is high in the tank because over dose of dechlorinator will reduse the oxygen dramatically.
@@KaveManAquatics I had a crash after dosing safe 2x and forgot to turn on the power head 😭 which was pointed towards the surface lost few fishes by suffocating them. Just to be aware we have to double check the surface aggregation.
If you dont have surface agitation, with or without Safe, it will suffocate them. How can you attribute their death to the Safe if they were without oxygen?
@@KaveManAquatics I didn't mean there was zero water movement my fx6 and fx4 where running which is more than sufficient to create an aggregation on the surface for the tank but due to the over dose of safe the water was too low in oxygen. The filters flow was not enough. Now a days I double the cerculation on the day of water change
I hear you, but I highly doubt the dechlorinator caused the lack of oxygen. Especially since you've already got plenty going. Death by suffocation due to overdose could happen in a tank that already has low oxygen. But with your 2 outputs that doesnt sound like the case. I understand your point though, technically yes if overdosed it can lower oxygen, I've just never seen it happen.
Thank you man!!! I am about to buy a 200L aquarium and I am having headache how many times I need to go back and fort to fetch to the water refilling station. lol! So I can just fill my tank from the tap and then add this right? Thanks a lot!
Sir m into the mess my geophegaus albino heckeli starts gasping n reject food after every water changes tough I add sodium thy sulphate in every bucket of water but still it's not enough for my heckeli and just a week before I losty two out of 10 those were all above 6 inches please 🙏 help me
Question, do you turn off the filter when filling up the new tap water? Prime/Safe will require contact time to dechlorinate tap water, by having it on, don't you think some of the chlorinated water go into the canister and kill the beneficial bacteria? I have always switched mine off when filling straight from the tap and switch back on after say 10 minutes to give enough time for Prime to work. Am I thinking too much? Or is it a valid point? What do you think Kev?
A valid concern. I do turn my filters off, but not so much for that reason. I turn them off because I do 80% water changes and the water levels go below the intakes, which will lose the syphon of the filter. After filling up, when water level goes back above the intakes I turn them back on to get the water flowing again. But in the past I would keep them on all the time. The small trace amounts of chlorine that do make it into your filter (before the dechlorinator has had a chance to work) wont be enough to really effect your BB. BB needs to be exposed to a specific amount and for a specific amount of time of chlorine to begin killing them off. And your dechlorinator will remove that chlorine before that time and amount happens. Hope that made sense...
Hi Kev, can you help me understand why safe is safe to use when doing water changes since it doesnt take care of heavy metals like prime? If they fixed this then it would be easier to say that safe is a bulk version of prime. But just not sure if prime is still better?
I have ammonia in my well water every now and again. If I fill up the tank with this water, within 24-48 hours after the prime has worn off; will the ammonia be gone by then?
Adding Stability when adding new fish helps to boost the bacteria production you'll need for the increased bio-load. You could also add some stress guard to help keep everyone calm and the new fish less stressed.
Hi there KaveMan Aquatics, I just wanted to know whether it would be safe for me to add Methylene blue to water that has just been dechlorinated by a de-chlorinator substance?
A 5 degree increase during your water change is not going to affect your fish much at all. I wouldn’t even worry about it. Send that water straight to the tank with some prime 👍
So I have a 40 gallon tank with cycled filter media that’s been set up for 2 weeks now and the parameters were starting to level out. But then I did a 50% water change and forgot to add prime until about 20 minutes later🙄. Did I kill the beneficial bacteria?
Its possible, but also possible they could have survived. Really depends on how much chlorine is in your source. Continue testing the tank. If ammonia and Nitrite stay at 0 you're still good to go 😊

Important question: when I do a 80% water change, do I add the water conditioner into the now 20% water left, that is in the aquarium? Or do I add the water conditioner AFTER I refilled the aquarium to its 100%? Because when it's that little water left, and I add that much Conditioner, I am still scared that the amount might be negative for the fish, at least for a short a mount of time
It’s safe to add to the 20% of tank water remaining. I add it just before adding in the new tank water. 😁
@@KaveManAquaticsthank you so much
New to channel, love the videos brother! This is exactly what I was looking for- I was nervous about using the python to run the tap water right into the tank, your video helped a million. Thank you!
My pleasure bro! Glad you're finding the channel helpful 😁
I bought api water conditioner is it good same as seachem and I have filtered tank 70l( gold fish) how much time I have to wait to dechlorinate water pls reply
It does dechlorinate but doesnt have the added benefits of detoxifying ammonia like Prime does
@@KaveManAquatics api stress coat or conditioner which one is better
Hey great video and thanks for sharing your knowledge. A lot of people probably didn't know what you just shared. Going to check out your other videos. Take care and stay safe 🇨🇦
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video, hope you find the rest of the channel helpful too 😊 BTW, Don't miss my first ever Live Stream this Tuesday, set your reminder now 😊 th-cam.com/video/94FFs-84X0U/w-d-xo.html
Heres the video that'll help get your tank cycled while keeping your fish safe - th-cam.com/video/9Cuqylaak3E/w-d-xo.html
Sir, if I'm using ro water with 30 tds for a fresh water tank, adding api aquarium salt in the water will replenish the salt traces in the water!! Can I also use prime and stability with the salt in the aquarium??
Sure, But if you're using RO water theres really no benefit in using prime. Unless you have ammonia already in your tank.
Great Video!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it "thanks" "strong" 💖
Good video. Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for your videos👍
My pleasure! Glad you're enjoying the channel
😂 great video your videos have helped me a lot i just had to move my tank good looking out bro
Thanks bro, Glad I could help!
So helpful thank you ✨👌!!
Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I do the same process double dose straight in just before the hose starts filling the tank
Awesome! 💪
What about higher levels of chloramine
Prime takes care of that too 😊
Do I need to dechlorinate store bought, Spring Water?
I have 100 ppm chorine in my tap water. Is it safe to use seachem prime directly to aquarium before water change?
Yes, absolutely! 😊
Its very hard to overdose Prime or Safe. You can safely dose up to 5x the recommended amount.
Yes sir! And I have a great method of draining and filling as well. Watch this - th-cam.com/video/5T4t_PdXCQw/w-d-xo.html
Haha! So true. I love Seachem Safe. Actually all Seachem products. Plus the guys over there are super cool and helpful.
Yes they are!
Hey Kev,
Super helpful videos, I don't use prime in my tanks and actually use Continuum Fraction. Is there a massive difference in the two products?
Not sure, never heard of or used that other product. Sorry couldnt be more helpful.
I was looking for this question. Thanks for asking and thanks Kaveman for the answer
Hi Kev, can you help me understand why safe is safe to use when doing water changes since it doesnt take care of heavy metals like prime? If they fixed this then it would be easier to say that safe is a bulk version of prime. But just not sure if prime is still better?
Heavy metals are rare in most tap water. If you’ve confirmed you have heavy metals then I would always use Prime instead.
Awesome video Kev! Should I use Safe or Prime for a 29 gal tank for two axolotls? Or is safe and prime the same? Thanks :)
Sort of the same but not really. Go with Prime for a 29 gallon. Less chance of overdosing 😊
I have ammonia in my well water every now and again. If I fill up the tank with this water, within 24-48 hours after the prime has worn off; will the ammonia be gone by then?
I need some help. I have nitrite in my tank at 0.5 ppm but no ammonia or nitrate showing I have fish in this tank also ?
Good to know. Question when adding fish what do you add for thats?
Adding Stability when adding new fish helps to boost the bacteria production you'll need for the increased bio-load. You could also add some stress guard to help keep everyone calm and the new fish less stressed.
Just wanted this video long time didn't knew what to do and when .
Glad I could help! 😊
Good video like
Thank you 👍
Hi there KaveMan Aquatics, I just wanted to know whether it would be safe for me to add Methylene blue to water that has just been dechlorinated by a de-chlorinator substance?
I live in Arizona, my water temp out of the tap is 85. My tank 80. how do I regulate temp in a 80% water change
