- It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the aquarium info out there. One of the first headaches we experience is getting our tank cycled. How to do it, how long does it take, when am I done?
You may already know about the Prime and Stability method but many don't know how long this is supposed to take.
Not only do I give you the answer to that question, but I'll also discuss why there's so much "misinformation" out there and what to do about it.

I used your prime and stability method to safely cycle 6 tanks never lost one fish. That video about stop killing fish was beyond Amazing 💪🏻😎
Happy to hear that bro! Thanks for putting your trust in me and Seachem! 💪
@@aqualife6848your a silly way to cycle a tank
@@KaveManAquatics during in quarantine, until when I gonna use prime and stability?
@@aqualife6848why is that?
@kgconstrictors Since you've had great success with the Prime/Stability fish-in cycling, I have 2 questions:
Did your API test results vary from day to day? I've had Nitrates go from 40ppm, to 20ppm, then 10ppm, then back to 20ppm, then back to 10ppm. And Nitrites have been varying from 2-5ppm back and forth. Think this is normal?
Second question: I'm using a sponge filter in my 6 gal tank (male betta). Should I rinse out in aquarium water? The water is looking pretty gunky with "stuff" since it's been in there over a month without cleaning the sponge. I did do several water changes varying in amounts, until I saw THIS amazing video. I've been using the Prime/Stability cycling for just 7 days now; no water changes and no vacuuming. Yuck tank! The stuff I'm seeing is not bacteria bloom.... but I've got a bit of that too, since about day 3 of this particular cycle. Any answers/advice for my 2 questions? Thanks in advance! :)
Your the man Kev. I have watched hours of your videos, nobody is as thorough as you. Your humbleness and will to spread your extensive knowledge is very rare. Thank you sir, and Semper Fidelis.
You’re absolutely correct!!!! I was a zookeeper 20 years and have kept fish since 1984. You hit the nail on the head. Thank you!!!
Thanks bro! Appreciate you sharing your experience 😁💪
🤣🤣 Oh my goodness..I promise this is the BEST CHANNEL ON TH-cam!!! I have learned more in the last 3 days than in the whole year before having fish!! And I get to giggle instead of stress!! Thanx!

I keep a very different style of aquariums and fish than yours (planted, ecosystem style) but love your channel. You get to the point without rambling or being boring.
Glad to hear that bro! And I know that style of Aquarium is a beautiful thing too. I appreciate that you can see the different methods we all use to achieve the same results, a beautiful aquarium 😁
I love how you used dry humor to get your point across, I have been watching your videos for a few years now and have learned so much from you and by my own trial and error. Keep up the amazing content man.
Thanks for sticking with me bro, glad you’re finding success! 😁
Speak the truth!! This is why you have quickly become my favorite TH-cam about aquariums and fish keeping, you always keep real and speak the truth. Keep it up!

Great advice and great video presentation! Keep up the good work caveman!

Just got my 75 gallon fully cycled, started it Jan. 8 2024. Cycling just takes time, I did my with fish in with about 20 fish. The start of my cycling started real slow, then i started using prime and stability it went way faster.
How many ml did you put in 75 gallon? I have 40-50 fish in there? Cuz my water always green after 2days
@@jacquescorral5976 just followed the bottle honestly, since then I’ve upped my filtration to a fx6, and a standalone water polisher. Any green water(algae issues) I’ve cured using an inline uv light.

Prime and Stability works. Period.
When i got my first fish tank i knew NOTHING about the tank cycle. I stumbled across your video about the nitrogen cycle and got worried(it was about a week in with five guppies in a 10g tank). I got seachem Prime from petsmart. Had to settle with a bottle of quickstart from API because they were out of Stability( but i ordered some online). Started dosing like you said. And now i have a flourishing tank with guppies giving fry. I even changed HOB filters in the middle of the tank cycle. Prime and Stability works. Period.
Recently gotten in to this new obsession and wasn’t aware how addictive it can be. I’m learning a tonne of information from your vids. God bless you man 🙏

I want to thank you for your wisdom and expertise in keeping Cichlids in particular. My cichlids/tank was very sick for weeks I didn’t know it but knew they were acting differently, I followed exactly what KaveMan Aquatics said and now my cichlids are back and very lively. Thanks a million, your highly recommended.
I’ve just set up a new tank and I’ve been watching all your videos daily! I’ve added a few fish in the first 24hr and using prime and stability hopefully everything turns out good 🤞🏻 watching from the UK 🇬🇧
Just check Ammonia and nitrites daily, if it gets too out of hand do a 30% water change. It’s going to spike during the cycle but prime will protect the fish, but if it gets too high do a water change…
Welcome to the hobby bro! You're on your way to a cycled tank. 😁💪
@@KaveManAquatics thankyou! These videos give me some confidence for sure! I’ve been adding prime morning and night, hoping to get some discus in the next month or so 🤞🏻

Thank you bro! Appreciate you! 😁💪
Nice vid as always. Biggest variable for most novice fish keepers is the water source. Most people don't know what is in their water when setting up or changing water. It took me a long time to really dial in my water. My source is filtered hard well water. I change my water once to twice a week, and incorporate a little of each prime and stability per change just to add beneficial bacteria, and help keep that ammonia down. Water looks amazing. Fish stress is managed. I'm still always monitoring the first 24 hours after a water change to make sure that nothing got botched. Keep keeping us fish fanatics educated. Thanks for your info and contributions! 👍
Great video Kev! I agree...each tank's are different and focus on the how and why. That's exactly why like you said, move through this hobby at your own pace. Thank you and loved the necklace!😂❤❤😊
🤣🤣 It's my favorite piece of jewelry for the trolls 🤣🤣 Glad you enjoyed the video Lori!

Great video, great funnystuff, great fsh in the background as always! A few weeks ago, a pipe had burst in a vacant apartment above me and destroyed my apaerment. I had to relocate temporarily and couldn't bring my 20 gallon tank with me (which had some upstairs floodwater pour into it), so I purchased a 5 gallon from petsmart with a large walled-off section for filter media. I dosed it with prime, stability, and stress guard and the signs of stress he accumulated from the incident (lack of movement and his fins started turning black at the edges) cleared up in less than 12 hours. I kept dosing it daily and then every 3 days because while he can fit and swim in a 5 gallon, he should really be in a 30 gallon (alas, apartment space restrictions), Right now, Kirby is still doing absolutely fine. The walled off filter compartment is great because I was able to transfer all my biomedia and polishing filter media from his home tank over to the temporary and it doesnt get in the way of his swimming in such a small space.
In about a week, my fish and I will be able to move into a new place and he'll be back in his old tank. At this point, I think I've remembered everything I learned from your channel in regards to cycling, filtration, and water clarity, so I'm extremely confident it'll go well and would know what to do if there's any problems.
I appreciate you and what you do for the community so much!
I appreciate everything you said in this video. I have a 75 that is totally self sufficient. But I can’t replicate it in any other tank. I have a 125, 110, 90, 55, and many 20/10 gallon aquariums. And this just solidifies what I’m dealing with. Each tank is different. And I have to deal with them as they are. I can’t compare them to any other tank. I have to do what they require. Hands down… best advice ever.
You nailed it bro! 🎯 Thanks for sharing your experience!
Using this method for my saltwater tank with clownfish! So far so good! Thank you! So glad i came across your page, definitely a huge fan

Best part is when people THINK stability will cycle the tank the same day lol.
Stability is my go to, but I'll dose for the first 8 days then stop (fish-in cycle) but the minute I get a sign of ammonia I restart the dosage. And your right, it all depends on tank size and stock for fish in cycle. I find it more of a pain for smaller tanks like 10-30 gallons to cycle being smaller in volume. But I have 8 tanks with no issues with cycle, established media and dosing stability and prime!
Keep going with the great info kev!
PS thank you for passing on the MTS!!!! Lmao
Kev,
Wow man what a great video sir. I love the alternate personalities lol. Especially the stab at put dirt and load up a bunch of plants lol. 😂 this shows that all tanks are not created equal. Some tanks and fish can be kept with plants others you can’t. I have two heavy planted tanks with a sand substrate and I hardly have to do water changes. But I have a 100 gal CA/SA cichlids tank that the plants would be destroyed and eaten. Proof that not every tank style is the same for every one. Always speaking the facts brother. 😂❤😅
You nailed it brother! Exactly what I was trying to say! 😁💪🎯
I started my 10 gallon on January 20th this year. Fully stocked the tank on start up with 6 tetra and 2 mystery snails as I didn’t know about the nitrogen cycle. I learned quick and the hard way. The tank took 6 weeks and 3 days to cycle. I had to resort to daily water changes plus prime and fluval cycle in an attempt to save the inhabitants. I ended up losing one tetra (the smallest and weakest one from day 1) but everyone else pulled through.
I’m currently cycling a 5 gallon tank (BEFORE I add fish this time) as I want to get a betta. I’ve added live plants to the 5 gallon (Anubias, Java fern, moss ball and salvinia minima). The talk is about halfway through the cycle (ammonia has dropped to .25 but nitrates ~3 ppm) and it’s only been 2 weeks. It appears every tank is different and cycle time can vary.
Hi Kev i use both these products and never had a problem great video ❤from🇦🇺.
Great to hear! 😁💪
met 1 of the arowana breeders in indonesia. They told me about seachem Stability its unlock after 48 hours to activate thier live bacteria. did change to microbe lift or Fritz Zyme 7 it has activated live bacteria. but thanks to your recommendation i still click to seachem stressguard. cant live without it
Great video Kevin keep up the great work and the beautiful tanks.

Hi Kev, please make a follow up video about the no water change myth that seems to be gaining traction. There's another one I've heard lately is that Prime does nothing in relation to neutralizing ammonia and also as a conditioner. You Kev…not sure if you will get this. I want to purchase a flowerhorn. Just one. A juvenile maybe 3 to 4 inches tops. I’ve heard these guys require frequent water changes. But if I am doing a fish in cycle and I don’t want to remove the water and kill the bacteria that’s building up, is it safe for this species? I hope this question makes sense. On top of this,my new filter will also have Seachem matrix. Is this a bad idea ? I guess this is a two fold question. I know this is an older feed so I’m not sure if you will get this. Hopefully you will. Thank you for you content!
Broski the 450 is gorgeous all the tanks and fish are gorgeous keep on keeping on absolutely beautiful
Thank you my bro! Much appreciated
Dew rag Kevin told me i don't need to water change if i take out all my fish and add dirt hahahahahahaha i about died😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I wanted to rescue about 40 fish from a horrible unfiltered, overcrowded and algae and poo laden box.
The initial search gave the results of "two to six weeks of cycling a tank"
These fish didn't have 2 weeks let alone 2 days.
This method allowed me to move and save the fish immediately. They're all alive and happy in a 300L tank.
Looking forward to nitrate & nitrate tracking in app!
Me too!! 😁 targeting next month! 💪
Wanted to keep Cherry shrimp and every where I went said 5-8 GH and 3-6 Kh with 7.2 pH. I was so upset because my well water was like 18GH 12Kh and 8.2 pH. Then came the flurry of addatives I would have to buy to accomplish what others can and I gave up. 2 months later I said what the heck if they die at least I tried, with Fluval stratum as substrate and Dwarf Sag as plants I started cycling which took 6 days (seachem matrix was split in half from my 55 gallon community tank and dosing ammonium chloride).
Now almost 1 year later with more shrimp than I can count and never having to do a water change other than the first one after the cycle finished I'm proud of my 20 long shrimp tank.
Let no one tell you can't do something in this hobbie, get as much general knowledge as you can and take a chance, chances are it will work out well for you and 'your' tank 😊
Great video sir. I'm trying to learn more being a fish owner and I had a few questions sir?. HI Kaveman I loved your videos eso on the fish in cycle with Prime and Stability. I used it successfully to cycle the few tanks fpr my new Bettas. But I have a question and a situation now which i need your advice. One of my Batte fish is sick (for a long time). After his last treatment in a seperate hospital tank i thought he was healed and moved him to a new tank ( no tank mates) and i do cycling with prime and stability (as usual). but after 7 days of dosing i think the tank is cycled with 0 ammonia and nitrite and some nitrates. Unfortunately my fish is not well and very lethargic. so i think i made my first mistake of dosing Seachem Paraguard into the tank. The fish reacted well initially but at day 3 i realised my nitrites has spiked to 0.25ppm. I did 3 rounds of water changes (50%, 40%,30% treated with Prime) over half a day and the water still tested 25ppm nitrites (Am0, Nitrates 5ppm) . I proceeded to dosed prime and stability and didnt do any water changes. the next morning i checked nitrites as again spiked to closed to 0.5ppm while Am and Nitrates remained same). I dunno what i have done wrong. I have just changed 70% of the water (treated with prime) and will do the testing later. But i know almost for sure the nitrites will still spike the next day.
Do you have any idea what's is going on? Theres a sponge filter and bio filters in my tank. I have cleaned the sponge filter with tank water yesterday. Do you think i shd be dosing Stability after every water changes now? Is the nitrites spike suggesting there isnt enough BB in my tank?
@kavemanAquatics can you make a video on prime and stability, there is alot of online chatter that prime doesnt actually detoxify nitrites.
I've got a bunch of them 😁 I've also proven how it works countless times. This video will be helpful! - th-cam.com/video/9Cuqylaak3E/w-d-xo.html

Sorry I’m starting my tank Monday just wanted to double check that’s fish in no water changes doing this method?
@@jackcauser347 fish in in cycle and no water changes until ammonia and nitrites hit 0
You should try a salt water set up
You should stay tuned! 😁
Problem is that every time someone tried to test if prime truly detoxifies (not remove) ammonia the result was no or inconclusive at best. Im still hoping that someone comes up with something that resolves this.
However i myself have set up 4 tanks with fish on day one using prime with stability with practically perfect success. So that was my own personal very scary test, but now im confident to recommend and do it myself with no fear.
Yea, I've seen a lot of those inconclusive tests too. But like you, the only experiment i truly care about is my own. I've started tanks with fish countless times successfully and thats all the proof I need 😁 I'm just sharing my success stories but at the end of the day, it's up to the individual if they want to try it. 😁
Hello Kev. I left this same question on another video, but I need a Solution ASAP and I trust you. I have a small tank that has a bacteria bloom. It was almost gone until I added some conditioner and bacteria. Now it is more cloudy then it was to begin with. It looks horrible. It is so think that you can cut it with a butter knife. I have done no water changes. I just started to watch your channel and taking your suggestions. I have bought prime and stability from Amazon and waiting for it to be delivered, But I need HELP! What should I do from here to prevent it from getting worse again because apparently I don't know what I am doing? Thank you, KaveMan
Don't do a thing. Let your filter do its thing and the bacteria grow at its own pace. If you have fish in already you should be dosing with Prime and Stability daily. If you dont, just Stability daily. No water changing, no cleaning, nothing. Make sure you have good surface agitation for oxygen transfer and leave your filter on and running. It will clear up on its own. 😁
Where can I get a shirt like that one you are wearing. It looks awesome
Thanks bro! You can find all the KaveMan Merch here 😁 - kaveman-aquatics.myshopify.com/collections/official-kaveman-merch
Love the vids man! Quick question i just started my new tank 2 days ago. done the test and everything is perfect all the levels are right where they should be, which kinda confuses me since they say it takes a while get the cycle going? Do i still continue to dose the tank daily or?
I drop a 3.4 oz bott5 of prime on my 125 tank, it was open and a oscar hit the top glass but fish look find
Worked great for us.
Great to hear!
How much do I add prime and stability to a 5 gallon tank?
which tests kits are suitable for Ammonia testing while using Prime as Nessler and salicylate based kit are unreliable. SeaChem multi test Ammonia and or SeaChem Ammonia aletrt seems to be the only one. Whats your take on this. Great video very informative
You are correct. Most test kits test for total ammonia. Meaning ammonia and ammonium. Prime will always show up as ammonia on those kits because Prime doesnt remove ammonia, it detoxifies it and those test results show the non-toxic ammonia as well as the toxic. I love using Seachem ammonia alerts as they only read the free ammonia in the tank. Watch this - th-cam.com/video/yoSm3VFIvxQ/w-d-xo.html
KH and GH are not mentioned much. What are they, and how does it effect fish health?
KH is your carbonate hardness and GH is your general hardness. Basically KH is your buffer that helps to maintain your PH levels and GH is the mineral content of magnesium and calcium which determines your waters hardness. I dont have a video on these 3 specifically (yet) but here's a great article - kavemanaquatics.com/aquarium-ph-gh-and-kh-water-chemistry-guide/
Kev please drop twice a week
I wish I could bro! Glad you're enjoying the channel! 💪
Did i see an EGA above one of the tanks ?? If so Semper Fi Brother!! Nice ass tanks !!
Yes sir! Thank you Devil! 😁💪
How long is a bacteria bloom supposed to last is that the cycle your talking about
I really like your videos a lot of help thanks. I have one question that makes my head spin every time I hear it. Water changes. I have a 30 gallon tank with around 10 fish in it for around 5 years now. I have never did a water change, but my tank loses around 1 1/2 - 2 gallons of water a week do to evaporation. I add new water each week with water conditioning and bacteria in it. I never had any problems with the tank. I might lose one fish every year, but it usually an older fish. I have my water tested at a local pet store and they say it good all the time. So should I keep doing things the way I am doing things or change the way I am doing things. I have people tell me if it’s working just leave it alone and keep doing it the way you are doing it. Thanks
I used ammo guard sometimes before I got my cycle and I got it in 2 weeks
I’ve been cycling my tank since the 6th Jan and had a slight hiccup last week with overdosing ammonia to 8ppm and doing a water change to bring that back down to 2-4ppm. I’ve been using Blue Shark’s Colony and Seachem Stability and yesterday I thought my cycle had started back up as I had readings for both Nitrite and Nitrate. Today I’ve tested and my nitrite and nitrate levels seem nonexistent and I’m back at square 1. Ammonia is still 2-4ppm. Is it worth starting over?
Miss ya Kev haven't been on in a while. Making a 1200 gallon above ground pond in my porch. I wonder if the same concepts apply I'm sure they do any suggestions?
Thats tough! 💪 Never built a pool before bro...but I know the main concern is always keeping algae away 😁
@KaveManAquatucs I have a betta fish in a small 5gal tank and doing a in fish cycle. It’s been a week since I started using Prime and Stability. My Ammonia reading is 1.0 Nitrite is 2.0 and Nitrate is 5.0. Should I do a water change? Thanks in advance I’m new to this.
Your tanks look amazing!! Are we getting a scuba 3 in the 450?
Absolutely! 😁

Hi Kev great videos just wanted to ask as I have one axolotl in my 130ltr tank and have 0.25 Ammonia 0 nitrite and 5ppm of nitrate. I have been following your guide to cycle your tank and have been dosing it with 5 caps of prime and 3 caps of stability. Should I start to see soon the nitrates go up to 40ppm and is my ammonia ok just slightly up from zero? And secondly do I have to turn my UV filter light off as well? Thanks and apologise for the long ass mesage too 👍
